Hey shawties, it's ma burfday!

So I finally hit the big Dirty 30. Yep, 3 decades of carousing and galavanting with nothing to show for it. Supposedly the 30s are the best years of life, so they say. We'll have to see.

It feels weird though, like being in some limbo part of life where you neither have the impetuousness of youth nor the calculated and cautious experience of being older. Despite still being single and unmarried I guess I should be grateful that I still have a relatively well paying full time job, full head of hair and all my teeth.

Here's to hoping I don't screw anything up and to surviving to my 40s.

Happy birthday.  I just hit 30 myself in April so I know exactly what you're talking about.

I've found that when you hit your mid to late 20's the first thing that goes is youthful metabolism.  The days of eating or drinking anything you want and not having to suffer the consequences of weight gain and indigestion quickly fade.  You have to work harder and longer to maintain a fabulous figure.

Once I reached 30 my main gripe was that the next thing to go was my ability to recover from excessive drinking.  It was as if on my 30th birthday a switch was tripped.  In my 20's I was able to drink myself into a coma and following some greasy food and a couple of Excedrine I was able to get back up and do it all over again, sometimes for multiple days straight.  Now if I have one too many beers I wake up feeling like someone beat the hell out of me in my sleep.  And after a half a bottle of Excedrine and a handful of various McDonalds breakfast sandwiches it still takes another two days before I begin to feel even remotely normal again.  If I make my best effort to do it again the next day I'm lucky if I even survive.

Happy 30th.  Don't drink too much.  Otherwise you may find that your alcohol switch has been tripped as well.

My intent wasn't to put a damper on your birthday, so let me make it up to you:

I tend to agree with this so far (I'm 33). I can't say my 20s were bad, but there was a lot of stress too - trying to get out of school, finding a job, getting married, settling down, etc. When I hit my 30s all that stuff was behind me and I could just focus on my career, friends, and family.

I'm having a lot more fun now. I seem to have more friends, I actually get out and do more stuff. I think from older folks' perspective 30 is sort of the magic number where they start taking you a bit more seriously as a real adult, and that respect kind of cascades through everything. You're no longer the "young kid" at work, you're considered part of the after hours Friday night beer crowd. Stuff like that.

I turn 31 a week from today and I will confirm that I can no longer recover from drinking as well as I did when I was 25 and my beer gut is starting to become noticeable.

Other than that I was REALLY poor throughout my 20's, but now the hard work and slim living is starting to pay off. So yes my 30s seem to be starting out much like others. So good luck.

There has got to be some equation to inablitly to binge drink = more disposable income as both apply to me at age 33 as well.

Sorry Morlac, I go by Travis when not online. smile

Ceekay: Yep, never said I acted/looked my age.   ninja  Recently had a friend from high school's mom tell me that I look the same as I did back then.  Not really true (stupid waistline is a bit bigger for one thing) but close.

Also, whoops, didn't mean to drag this off topic smile
