Avatar is about to be released on 4/22 and I was close to pre-ordering, but I don't think I will now.  Avatar, IMO, has to be experienced in 3D and I'm certain that the visual experience will be hurt by seeing the movie in the theater.  I know that 3D television are new to the market, but I can't see myself buying a new TV anytime soon.   So, I think I am out for buying the DVD/BR version of the movie.

Anyone else feels like this?

Yep.  Take away the 3D, and it goes from a "holy-crap-awesome-amazing-incredible" visual experience to just a decent scifi flick.

I am, however, looking forward to seeing it again in theaters when (if) it gets re-released over the summer.

Nope.

3D at theatres = awesome when it's done right.
3D at home = expensive gimmick that I don't want to bother with

I'm getting it on BD this week for sure. It will still look plenty good on an HD TV.

We're picking it up.  My wife really enjoyed it and while it won't be in 3D the visuals will still be impressive on an HDTV.  She rarely mentions wanting any specific movies, usually leaving the DVD collection up to me, so when she does want a particular movie it's only fair that we pick it up.  And it should be a nice showcase for rattling the walls as well.

I noticed on the box office results that Avatar is still in 12th place. Crazy.

Blu-ray on the way! We're just trying to figure out when we're going to have the time to watch it.

I strongly suspect that I'll be getting a new TV within the next year, and so I'm betting I wind up going with a 3d capable set.  So I'm waiting on the 3d version of the movie.

I'm holding off on buying the blu ray until they release the double dip version in the fall, which will give me time to rent it from Netflix (where it's been delayed a month under the misguided concept that having to wait an extra month after waiting a bunch of months already will cause me to run out and buy it instead of waiting) to determine if I like it.

as for 3D, I looked into 3D sets recently.  you have to have the set, the glasses and a 3D blu ray player.  luckily the PS3 is getting 3D capabilities via a firmware update so that's one less thing to buy, but the glasses and the set currently run around $2500, and the sets are still hit or miss (3D versions of Samsung LED's more so than Panasonic's (i think it's them) plasma sets).

while i fully intend to buy Avatar on Bluray eventually, i'm holding off for a release that includes more than just the movie.  i'm not really concerned about 3D at this point, but i would like a version with some special features that go into how the movie was made.  from what i've seen/read already, the creation process behind Avatar seems pretty fascinating and i would really like to see more.  i'll most likely rent the Bluray to watch very soon, but i'm holding my purchase for a bigger release this fall.

In the paper this morning they mentioned that Cameron was putting the finishing touches on 6 minutes of additional footage. Hopefully there is already more completed and it's not just 6 additional minutes in total.

I just upgraded to a fancy DTS-HD/Dolby TrueHD receiver a little while back, and it's a noticeable difference if you have any ear for audio at all.

Worthwhile upgrade for anybody that hasn't done it yet!

Just a heads up for you guys.  You may want to hold off on the Avatar purchase until the DRM boondongle is cleared up.

Most of the complaints appear to be coming from people with Denon and Samsung blu-ray players. Haven't heard any complaints from people with Oppo, Sony, Pioneer, or Panasonic players.

The disc works in both my PS3 and my Panasonic BMP-BD65.

Yay! More DRM that screws the legitimate customer, while the pirate gets yet another DRM-free copy that allows him to put it wherever he wants without issue!

When we upgraded our own system I did a little "experiment" by playing an action scene in regular Dolby Digital 5.1 and then again in DTS, and the difference in clarity, sound separation, impact, and overall presentation was shockingly noticable.  I wouldn't begin to suggest being an audio connoisseur, but I could notice a difference immediately.  When given an option between the two, selecting DTS is a necessity for me.  I just wish it was a default setting on DVDs as I sometimes forget to check.  I understand that not everyone has a DTS system, but why shouldn't they have to select an inferior sound option rather than defaulting to it automatically and forcing audiophiles such as ourselves to select DTS?  Fabulous

You don't get the opportunity too often with Blu-Ray anyway.

I can't think of any discs I own that have a DTS track but default to something else.

I know Batman Begins defaults to a standard Dolby Digital track instead of the TrueHD, which is silly, but it's the only one sticking out in my mind. Any disc with a DTS-HD Master Audio track seems to default to it.

Perhaps with Blu-Ray, but as my system involves two upscaling 400-disc DVD changers, all "normal" DVDs seem to default to Dolby Digital.  As I don't have a Blu-Ray system I'm unfamiliar with its audio defaults.  At least with advanced picture comes advanced default sound as well.   icon_smile

I'm still somewhat perplexed why this movie has made so much money. I totally got it with Titanic - you especially had the romance factor that had girls coming back again and again. But this movie did not have that kind of emotional punch. I suppose I could see its appeal as a spectacle - people needed to see the 3D in action. But if that is the case, it's surprising to see it carry over so well into a 2D medium.

It's really beautiful in 2D as well. It's not the same as 3d obviously, but I saw it in 2D first and really liked it. I think it's more of a hype/marketing thing really. Same reason the 50 cent video game was a top seller. Tongue Also, it's immediately accessible, well reviewed, heavily talked about, familiar and relatable.

I guess that means I get it.

My friend saw it with me in 3D in theatres and recently watched in in 2D on Blu-Ray. He said the colours on Blu-Ray are stunning. You don't realize how washed out the 3D theatre version was until you watch it in HD.
