I know we were discussing this in the Sherlock thread but it starts next month
I just saw a trailer on TV (and it's saying that its coming soon for the UK),but for some reason to 'SKY Living' Channel which the only other show i watch on there is Teen Wolf, new shows like Sinbad,Game Of Thrones,Boardwalk Empire etc are usually on 'SKY 1' or 'SKY Atlantic' and are heavily advertised
I think straight away this show is not going to be that popular here because it being on SKY Living(no bastard watches it,LOL) i am also wondering how well it will be advertised that its on that channel as well, the advertisement for Teen Wolf is pretty much zero here, but i really like that show so perhaps it will be a dark horse..I am pretty surprised that i managed to even see a trailer for a SKY Living show
I take it we will not have to wait as long after you guys see it if its already saying coming soon here as the wiki page shows that it premiers Thursday September 27th in America
Have you guys seen any trailers for it yet?,and is Thursday nights a good time slot for your side of the pond?(I'm interested to know how this will do)

Thursday 10 PM ET is an excellent slot for it, IF folks stay up to watch it. There is not much competition from over-the-air (OTA) TV. Not sure what the cable networks will be running at the same time.
OTA competition is ABC's Scandal and a Brian Williams news thing on NBC. Looks like the cable networks big shows are going to continue to air on Sundays - as they usually do.
Will be interesting to see if it generates any interest in the "late" ET primetime slot.

Thursday is traditionally a good tv night in the states. Elementary is taking the slot that The Mentalist had ( I believe the Mentalist is moving to sundays? ) and should do well there. Ive seen a few promos for Elementary and in spite of the the obvious comparisons to Sherlock ( one of my favorite shows on TV ) it looks like its going to be quite a different take on the Holmes concept. Enough so that I feel that there's definitely room for both series, without either stepping on the others toes.

I found Lucy Liu terrific during her multi-episode arc on Southland on TNT. I have never really previously warmed up to her in anything. My only disappointment was that I (and I think many fans of the show) grew to really like and respect her character. When they ultimately turned her crooked, it just seemed... well... out of character and more of a "how do we quickly write this character out of the show now that her multi-episode arc is over?" moment. I wasn't really a fan of how they ended her arc, but I enjoyed her being on the show and look forward to her "female Watson" take in this. It's also nice when they give a strong female role to an actress who's at least in my generation! (she's 43, turning 44 this year apparently).

It amuses me to see how many people are already ripping this show because there's no way it can live up to or compare to the excellent BBC series Sherlock. It hasnt even aired yet and people are calling it crap. I choose not to be so close minded that mere existence of Sherlock means Elementary is garbage. Ill let the show speak for itself, thank you. Elementary doesnt have to be better than Sherlock to be good and if its entertaining, thats good enough for me. Oh and since theres been a gazillion takes on the Sherlock mythos, including other modernizations prior to Sherlock, Elementary shouldnt be considered a "remake" of Sherlock, like many are claiming. Its just another take on the Holmes mythos. Theres plenty of room for both shows to exist.

I understand what you're saying, but sadly the show will be compared cause they are tackling the same mythos. I'll watch, but the previews I've seen isn't inspiring much hope.

I watched it, and enjoyed it OK. I mentioned I loved Lucy Liu's character's story arc on Southland. I've not particularly found her appealing in any other roles before that.
It wouldn't surprise me if they introduce some Moriarty type character as an over-arcing villain (as with Red John on The Mentalist, or a couple of the villains in Bones, among other shows).
I hope they keep the focus on the characters. It could be way too easy for it to become Sherlock Meets The Mentalist, or some sort of British version of Castle. Those don't even sound like terrible ideas -- I just think the show has potential to find its own identity and not lazily become Another Procedural TV Show.
As for BBC's show, of course I love it too, picked up the initial DVD set as soon as I could, and am eager for the next DVD set. My limited cable here doesn't seem to include the BBC channel it's on.
While I think the shows are completely different animals (beyond just Watson being a woman in the U.S. show), if one thinks "Sherlock in the modern day" is a trademarked idea that nobody should ever do more than once as a TV show idea on planet Earth, then this will upset one, no matter what, much like the U.S. version of The Office originally did.
imho, as long as Elementary carves out its own stories and characters and doesn't resort to copycatting the British show's themes, concepts etc., it should do fine.
I'm sure the creator of the British Sherlock will remain ticked. He probably assumed that if a U.S. studio did a "Sherlock in the modern day" show, he'd at least have gotten to be an executive producer and/or consultant on it as Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant were on the U.S. version of The Office (though Gervais/Merchant really had no ongoing involvement in the show, they presumably got paid in some way).

Agreed Blackjack. This is nothing like the BBCs Sherlock. As I mentioned before modernizing Holmes is not a new thing. Its been done even with the old Basil Rathbone movies. Moffat needs to get off his high horse and let his show stand on its own merits. I also agree that they will eventually need a "Moriarity" type or the show will devolve quickly into a simple weekly procedural and we have a ton of them already. They do need to be careful that making Watson a woman doesnt end up being a cliche but as long as the scripts stay strong I think Lucy Lui is a good enough actress to make it work. Overall, it was entertaining and has potential. The important thing is how it develops from here.

I don't think Moffat was worried about it stepping on 'Sherlock' toes by being updated, but rather that it was getting too far away from the original Conan Doyle version and was more like HOUSE MD
I do worry with Watson being a woman and wonder if the stories will bring an unwanted(for me)sexual tension between the two, like Rshetts says
But Like i say i have not seen it yet,and i am eager to see it
i know Benedict Cumberbatch said that if there's room for two Sherlock Holmes then there's room for three

Caught the tail end of NPR interviewing Lucy Liu, about the show. The creator has stated that there will not be a romance but rather a bromance between the two characters. Having said that this is an American tv show and what the audience wants they usually get. Course maybe they could introduce a love interest for Moriarty whom Holmes is also interested in. Perhaps a tragic death is what causes the two to become enemies.

Wasn't terribly impressed. It seemed to just be a poorly written american attempt at getting in on the sherlock holmes popularity train. I'll give it a few more chances, but i'm not holding out any hope.

I'm just glad Lucy Liu found a good role that doesn't overemphasize her Asian-ness. I remember an interview where she said she's been dealing with that all her career.
Also, did I catch this correctly that Watson in this show is part Vietnamese? Pretty interesting choice.

We've started watching the Granada show with my daughter, so now that seems to be in the mix, too, for us. Which is okay, since Holmes has always been of great interest to me. And all of these versions are very, very different. And all good, too, which is surprising (I certainly wasn't expecting much from the CBS show, but it's better than I would have guessed). On the Granada show, while I love Jeremy Brett's performance, I can't say I feel the same about the whole production. Something about it often feels stodgy to me. And it can lack tension when it should absolutely have it. I've felt this way about most of the British mystery shows (which is a shame, because my wife loves them). Poirot, for example. Love Suchet. Love the 20s style, too, but the show just leaves me meh.

The actor they got to play Young Sherlock Holmes just captured everything great about the character. It's one of my favorites as well. Edit: as an aside to Sherlock Holmes' fans, there's a reprint of the most excellent Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective game coming out shortly. Playing that game with a group of friends as a high schooler is one of my fondest memories. Such a great game.

glad its been renewed but it was almost a guarantee it would be. It has done quite well, ratings wise. After all of the accusations from across the pond about this show being a rip off of BBC's awesome series Sherlock, it turns out that Elementary is completely different. I had my doubts when the show was announced but its turned out to be quite entertaining. While the two shows share the very basic commonalities from the Holmes mythos, the similarities stop there. Theres good chemistry between the leads and making Watson a woman has worked well without feeling gimmicky.

meh, when Moffat first said what he said about Elementary,he quickly changed his mind a few months later when shown the pilot and he saw it was a lot different from Sherlock,he expressed that he was a fan before the Pilot was even shown in the U.S...he was first upset because they wanted Moffat to remake Sherlock for the U.S,and he said no,so CBS made Elementary...giving the circumstances, you could see how he could be upset, but he saw the Pilot and changed his mind I mean i was in two minds before i saw the show, whether it would be any good, with it being in New York starring Johnny Lee Miller and having Lucy Lui as Watson....would anybody else think it would be a dead cert for excellence? Benedict Cumberbatch when told about it said if there is room for two Sherlock Holmes then there is room for three Sherlock Holmes Actually Cumberbatch went on record to complain about being misquoted when saying Johnny Lee Miller(both who are friends) was doing Elementary for the pay cheque One thing i am disappointed in,and this goes with Sherlock as well is that we have not seen Holmes in any disguises,we saw in Sherlock him dressed as a Security guard, but that just meant he put a uniform on

My comments were not meant as an indictment of Moffat, which is why I did not use his name in my comments. I was merely expressing my surprise and happiness that the show is indeed a completely different take on Holmes, when compared to the BBC series. I understood Moffats concerns ( though when he expressed them I thought he was over the top, as well as a bit premature in his statements ) Im just glad that they ended up being unfounded.

I can do nothing but agree with you The biggest surprise for me is actually liking Johnny Lee Miller in something,ex-Mr Angelina Jolie hasn't really been doing it for me until this came along....(Apart from Trainspotting)

Moriarty should appear in some form in the next episode. I am still enjoying this I just wish CBS didn't take some weeks off with the show.

Well, tonight is the finale for both this and Person of Interest, so they will be taking more weeks off, unfortunately. I dig both of these shows, which is odd, since I normally hate CBS procedurals. These are actually a bit different, though.

Huh,it says on the wiki episode list that the last episode is a double episode(episode 23 and 24) on May 16th for you guys, although if its on tonight then the dates are wrong anyway because it says you still have May 9th episode as well(episode 22)...have they changed plans? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Elementary_episodes

I am going to miss the Thursday night line up. Ive enjoyed both shows a lot. I will say that Person of Interest has really rocked it lately. The addition of Shaw and the ongoing battles with Root have been great fun. Oh and Shaw is amazingly hot! She makes violence seem seductive.

Yep, interesting to see the actress from Fairly Legal take on a completely different persona.
