First two fatalities identified:

Krystle Campbell, age 29, of Arlington, Mass.
Martin Richard, age 8, of Dorchester, Mass.

Quote
Martin Richard's mother, Denise, reportedly underwent emergency brain surgery Monday to save her life, while his younger sister Jane Richard suffered a severe injury to her leg. A third child was unharmed.

Not Syria Civil War bad, but very sad.

Today's Globe was, as you would expect, almost entirely consumed with coverage of the bombing. There was also a story about 55 people dying in bombings in Iraq yesterday, the highest daily death toll in "almost a month."

Not to diminish the carnage in Boston, but it kinda puts things in perspective.

One of the two confirmed dead was an 8 year old boy.

What the FUCK is wrong with people these days?? It's all so frustrating and depressing...

You could think of it like that. Or you could think of it like 'within 60 seconds of the explosions, there were police and Guardsmen and civilians pulling down barricades, and using belts to improvise tourniquets, and reacting so quickly and skillfully that even with a ghastly event like this, only 2 people (so far) have died.' They did that after 2 blasts, so they must have known, on some level, that another blast was possible, but they did it anyway. I don't think we're in a world where we just happen to have a high percentage of our good guys happen to stand around when this stuff happens - I think a damn high percentage of people are, when it comes down to it, selfless and well-meaning - I'll take that against bemoaning the one in a million people who are really, truly, maliciously insane.

I always think of the quote attributed to Mr. Rogers:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

Patton Oswalt said basically the same thing in the quote DarkEL posted.

Who'd have thought that Patton Oswalt and Fred Rogers have a similar world view.

but even if he is just watching the marathon, then no harm no foul,it's not like these pictures condemn the person,I agree it's probably nothing and I am sure the experts have already seen this, assessed it and moved on

I am thinking of the recent shooting where the incorrect name of the suspect was passed around social media. The guy was receiving death threats because of all these internet detectives.

Yeah i can see what you mean

Third person has been confirmed as a Boston University Graduate Student but are withholding name until they get permission from family

This weekends London Marathon has of course had its security scrutinised but insisted that it will go ahead in defiance of the bombers, there will be silent tributes before each start and black armbands worn

Arrest Imminent

Quote
Boston bombing investigators believe they have identified a suspect from CCTV video taken before the attacks, US media reports.

The footage reportedly shows a man carrying and possibly dropping a black bag on the street where the second explosion took place and then walking away.

The video is believed to be from a department store and a television station.

FBI conference at 5pm Eastern

EDIT: TV reports now saying Arrest has been made EDIT 2: and is to appear in Court

The live Reuters feed here is very good: http://live.reuters.com/Event/Boston_Marathon_Explosion

Reporters at the Boston courthouse are saying it's being evacuated and the Globe reports a nearby hospital is also being evacuated.

FWIW, I've found boston.com to have a good balance between timeliness and accuracy. At the moment they're hedging with "conflicting reports" on whether a suspect has been arrested. News conference at 5 pm.

I was a state holiday in Massachusetts. Patriots Day celebrates the first battles of the Revolutionary War, and it's always the day they run the marathon. Government services like post offices all shut down, so this year Masachusetts taxes were due on Tuesday. Many businesses give their employees the day off. Not mine.  disgust

Patriots Day commemorates the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. It's observed in MA and ME, and to a limited extent in some other states. Really it's an excuse for giving government workers and many other Bostonians the day off for the Marathon. Virtually nobody else gets the day off, although schools are closed. We also get one extra day to file our state tax returns.

So technically it's a holiday.

Although the holiday date varies from year to year, the battles that started the American Revolution were fought on April 19. Anti-government zealots have made that date a rallying point (see Waco, Oklahoma City). That, and the coincidence with tax day, is the main reason that my first hunch was right-wing domestic terrorism.

This also happens to be my birthday, so there tends to be a lot of "interesting" events around that date.

I had never heard of the Patriots Day holiday, though.  I guess you east coasters just do whatever the hell you want.  Tongue

Shit is currently hitting the fan in Watertown,Boston(MIT Uni) after the killing of a police officer...I can only presume that its to do with the Marathon bombing, but i don't think that has been confirmed yet-EDIT: No it is not known yet

One reporter said "to say that there was a large police presence would be a massive understatement"

I am watching CNN,because my news channel(SKY)is just going on about Spotty kids in Wales(measles outbreak, pfft)

After hearing that the first suspect that they nabbed had a bomb on his chest that exploded, suddenly forcing a man to strip at gunpoint doesn't seem that bad at that particular moment.

I hope they nab this kid soon. I'm far enough from Boston to not be directly affected by the lockdown and manhunt, but the whole area's been in crisis mode for five days now. If it's getting tiresome for me I can only imagine how people in the city proper feel.

By all indications this was the work of two amateurs, apparently without outside support or encouragement, and it will be all over when they get the 19-year-old.

In case anyone has missed it, the second suspect has surrendered.  He was holed up in a boat just outside the lockdown perimeter.  The owner noted movement of the tarp covering it and blood and called it in.
