Deadspin

Pictures include images of wounded, blood, etc.

At least two detonations reported, injuries in the dozens, some severe.

My best friend lives in downtown Boston, not near Broylston St., thankfully. He is frantically Facebooking a lot of local coverage links.

Like most horrible incidents like this, tends to be a lot of contradictory and/or sloppy reporting initially, so expect a lot of different numbers, details etc. at news sites.

Boston Globe and other local news sites there seem really slammed with traffic right now and sometimes the pages time out.

NY Times has a live blog regularly updated...
http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/15/live-updates-explosion-at-boston-marathon/?ref=us
WARNING: I would label some of the blog's photos as NSFW -- it was an extremely bloody scene.  icon_frown

If you're curious about the precise location, plug "Copley Square, Boston, MA" into Google Earth. I used the iPhone app.

I've got the scanner feed up on my phone.  Reports are that EOD is on scene with dogs, and there was a general callout to advise that any further explosions would be under police control.

There was a bomb at UMass' JFK library.

Thankfully,  this was just officially denied by the college.

Two more bombs were found.

Btw,  there's a buzz feed photo thread out there with some pretty graphic pics.   I had to close it after the recent update.   Just awful.

Have a friend who was at JFK, at the time at least they were told it was just a fire in an off wing (not an explosion).

Scanner calls that I've heard indicate that a Penske truck attempted to gain access to the scene.  The driver told them that he was attempting to deliver medical supplies, but was turned away.  The call went out to attempt to locate the truck.  They've found one parked, and are clearing people away from it.

I'm back in Boston for a business trip. I walked through those exact bomb areas at least 3 times over the weekend.  I had so many coworkers and friends running, volunteering, or spectating. Everyone's on edge here waiting to hear that everyone else is ok. Can hear plenty of sirens and such from my office but I wasn't close enough to feel the blast.

I'm posting this from a cell phone so I don't know what's up with that news of no cell phone service.

That was some "anonymous department source," so who knows if it's accurate. If any more blasts go off, it seems like something they'd try to do though I'm not even sure you can easily implement a city-wide cell tower shutdown with so many providers and presumably some towers outside city limits providing service too.

Latest news bits suggest hospitals report an injury total closer to 50. Though Boston Globe's now apparently reporting closer to 100.

NHL agreed to postpone the Boston/Ottawa hockey game tonight.

Stop the planet. I want off.

Hopefully most of the injured will recover without complications. I saw a lot of limb loss in the graphic photos posted on various news sites. Just terrible. frown

I suppose we're in for wild speculation over the upcoming days as to the culprit. Luckily they'll find out and bring them to justice speedily.

You could think of it like that. Or you could think of it like 'within 60 seconds of the explosions, there were police and Guardsmen and civilians pulling down barricades, and using belts to improvise tourniquets, and reacting so quickly and skillfully that even with a ghastly event like this, only 2 people (so far) have died.' They did that after 2 blasts, so they must have known, on some level, that another blast was possible, but they did it anyway. I don't think we're in a world where we just happen to have a high percentage of our good guys happen to stand around when this stuff happens - I think a damn high percentage of people are, when it comes down to it, selfless and well-meaning - I'll take that against bemoaning the one in a million people who are really, truly, maliciously insane.

As long as we're stuck in a wait-and-see period, what are your personal suspicions -- foreign terrorists, domestic terrorists, lone nutjob(s), something else?

I'm leaning toward a lone anti-tax, anti-government nutjob.

Very saddened to hear about this. It's tragic for anyone injured or affected by it, but put it down to the being a parent effect; that an 8 year lost their life in this really chokes me up. I hope they find and nail the perpetrators of this!

this is awfully close to the usual time anti-government, white supremicist and "home-grown fuckers" like to stage their bullshit protest and their attacks.  of course, it's also Patriots day in Boston, so it makes it a nice target for both extremist m-fers.

And tax day. Plus there was a Tea Party rally two days earlier, which might not be remarkable elsewhere but is a rare thing here.

Latest news is lending more credence to international terrorism, but I'll stick with my first hunch for now. It's all still speculation.

It was a very smart target.

I think the synchronized bombings are a hallmark of al-queda but there were no secondary explosions once help arrived. Also the scale seems pretty small.

My guess is domestic terrorism.

There's places to see the videos of the bombings and the aftermath and it's pretty bad.  Not Syria Civil War bad, but very sad.

but even if he is just watching the marathon, then no harm no foul,it's not like these pictures condemn the person,I agree it's probably nothing and I am sure the experts have already seen this, assessed it and moved on

I am however still trying to figure out if he is doing a victory stance with one arm up in the air(even as the second bomb goes off),or if it's a side on view of a guy walking

I am thinking of the recent shooting where the incorrect name of the suspect was passed around social media. The guy was receiving death threats because of all these internet detectives.
