I liked this writeup a lot.

I'm more interested in having one than I thought I'd be, but I think I need to wait until the second or third revision.  I'd like it a little cheaper, a little lighter, and with a few more features.

I have a read a bunch of the reviews, it is pretty much as I expected from a first gen device. Good, but rough around the edges. Bit concerned about the slowness some reviews mention though, especially since the only reason I want one is for fitness and will be using apps like Runkeeper. I don't want to have to wait a second to see where I am for instance.

Reviews seem to be scaring people off of it if you read article comments. Apple haters are thrilled of course.

Edit: one thing that stands out between reviews and comments is that it's "not essential". Outside of my desktop computer and maybe my phone, I don't own a gadget that is essential. A smartwatch isn't even a must have, didn't we all know that already?

Of course it does bear repeating that the iPad was also deemed "not essential" and "a toy" and pretty much all the same negative things prior to its release.  I'm not expecting some sort of transformational miracle product from the getgo, but I do expect it to be a well-engineered gadget that will slowly inject its way into my everyday life.

From the reviews, do you think you will get that in its current form?

So despite being unconvinced that I'll wear one in situations outside of where I want the fitness tracking features (and occasional daily wear as a part of my watch rotation), I'm going to be online at 12:01am PST tomorrow night to preorder the least expensive one. I'm interested in how it works and the price point isn't too terrible. At the very least it'll be a nice fitness tracker that I don't have to wear alongside a watch (which doesn't work well).

I'll report back when I get it.

Also in regards to the essential thing - I'm paraphrasing someone smarter on Twitter: When your products goal is to find a way to get relatively well off people to spend more money, essential is not at all a requirement.

The two best things I've read about reviews are that there is praise from fashion and life publications and picky from tech reviews.  Secondly that most of the reviews are of the "but I wanted it to do this" type.

I'll also be ordering tomorrow at 12:01.  Sport edition in space gray 42mm.  Looking forward to new shiny!

Getting the 42mm black Sports as well. Reading around the Internet, that seems to be the far most popular option.

I actually like the silver casing (aluminum), but since they don't pair it with a blank band by default I will get space grey.  I didn't want to spend an extra $50 just to get the band I wanted.

I think the most important thing is that it's been one of the first real attempts to make wearable tech that is also fashionable. That opens the floodgates to wearable tech being a real "thing" and not some pie in the sky fantasy. I have no interest in this device, but I am interested in what it paves the way for down the road.

That's what I'm targetting as well.  If it is sold out I might go for the more expensive version which annoyingly becomes like $1000+$50 for the sports band.

My original thinking was if I couldn't get the black Sport edition, that I could justify jumping up to the SS. But the more I think about it, I just can't bring myself to pay that kind of price on a first-gen model that I will replace next year (would be easier if they had some kind of replacement/upgrade plan available). Also, while I am looking forward to having the watch, I am not excited about it. I really just want an improved Fitbit that looks nice. I don't have a good reason to splurge on this version.

Supposedly supply is very limited due to hardware manufacturing issues, but I am having a hard time gauging demand. After the reviews yesterday, a lot of Reddit and web page comments were saying they were waiting for version 2. Then you have a lot of very vocal people saying how stupid the watch is and that it over priced. I just don't see a lot of excitement about the watch. Of course you probably can't judge demand by review commenters and Reddit.

Listening to a podcast last night (ATP) and they made an interesting point. If you listen to the rumors, the watch hardware was ready to go last September, but the software has been holding it back (also the early reviews of it being slow and Apple saying they are working on improving the software for it to speed it up). That means we are already dealing with hardware specs that are at least 6 months old. Not that there has been a huge jump in technology in 6 months, but it won't be long before they can give it a nice hardware improvement.

Of course this is all to be expected, as early adopters we should know what to expect.

I mistakenly relied on Safari and the store never came up. Picked up my iPad at about 12:04 AM PST and bought the Black Sport. 4-6 week shipping. It went quick. With Apple Pay, the whole process took less than 10 seconds at least.

People who ordered at 12:03 PST got 4/24-5/8 delivery. One minute later and it shifted to May 13-24. Reports are that the SS are selling out just as quickly.

Is supply that limited or is demand that high?

Edit: 42mm Black Sport already showing June deliveries.

I ordered my 38mm Stainless Steel with Black Classic Buckle at 3:05am last night. I thought about dropping down to a Sport edition due to some of the "first gen" concerns expressed upthread, but I just don't think that would look right with the suits and dress shirts I wear every day to work. I think the point made by ATP about the next version being hardware version 2.5 because of the six month delay will probably prove correct. I'm pretty sure that the watch will be great for the things I want it for: the health aspects, telling time, and keeping me from looking at my phone when I get notifications in meetings or on dates, etc. If I get two years of service out of it, I'll be happy. I pay a lot more for computers that I only get 2.5-3.5 years out of, after all.

My arrival date is "April 24 - May 8", so now the waiting begins.

Got 42mm sport space grey using the iOS Apple Store app right as it became available.  Shipping 4/24 to 5/8.

I'm an apple fan (laptops, OSX, iphones) but the apple watch is just lame. 10k for one with a gold finish is beyond stupid. I'm betting its gonna be a flop...

Who cares there is a gold expensive one? It's not like they are pushing it on you, it's for a certain kind of person that isn't most of us. If there is a market for that kind of thing, which I am sure they researched, then it was a good business decision.

People said the iPhone and iPad would flop. They didn't, obviously. I do think it will become like the iPad, still sell incredibly well, but not be a product everyone wants. Other companies can only dream of having an Apple flop.

If last night was any indication, the launch brought in decent numbers.

Seriously, this line of thinking is there's only 1 version and it's 10k.

As a Surface 3 owner, I am not sure their growing pains are over, but it has come a long way. It's biggest problem isn't Microsofts fault though, it's that most software doesn't support touch controls. (A Surface Pro would be my first recommendation for a Windows based laptop, it's a great little machine.)

Anyway, people following the Chinese stores last night, showed that the gold watches sold out within the first hour. Of course we have no idea on the qualities available, but it shows that Apple isn't completely nuts.

They sold out in the US just as fast. All models did.

Then get a different model. smile

Also, it's not a gold finish. It is solid gold, and priced akin to other solid gold watches. Those things are all crazy expensive.
