Amazon has a release date for the season 3 blurays:  Feb 11th!  Thats pretty quick considering the UK air date isnt until early January.

yeah, it's a nice turnaround.  Maybe Amazon will have a sale on the first 2 seasons that coincides with the release.

this one?  Looking at it I see there are reviews that say it won't work on Sony blu ray players, which is what I have, while other reviews claim issues with other players.  If that turns out to be the cheapest option I'd rather spend more just to avoid any hassle.

thanks for the heads up though.

Yeah,  its the region free version.  The complains are due to people not understanding the difference between British tv formattting and US players.  It likely wont play on most lower end bluray players because of that but most high end players can handle the formatting and can play the discs just fine.  I actually own the set but I have a multi format player that can handle the discs.  It is kind of a screw up on Amazons part because most people are going to think that "region free" unlocks the discs for all US players and dont understand its a format issue and not a region issue.  Bottom line, unless you have a full format capable player youre smart to avoid the set and just get the reformatted "americanized" versions.

His 'death' was ....

Spoiler for Hiden:
...never really definitely explained, there were a few different versions of it,the last being probably the one that sticks for now....but John does ask Sherlock towards the end how he did it,so perhaps we are still waiting for Sherlocks answer for John

It made me smile just to see both of them together again, looking forward to the next episode which is this Sunday,so not long to wait

Nope, I think he's got it right.  In both series 1 & 2 it seemed to me at least, that the middle episodes were the weaker ones.  The term "weaker" being relative, of course, as I liked both middle episodes a lot.  For example in season 2 they started off with the Adler episode, which was fantastic.  The middle episode, the Baskerville one, was good but then came the Reichenbach episode, which was incredibly good.

Yeah,its all opinion anyway

i loved all of series one,the first being the Taxi Driver giving Holmes a choice of pill, the third being the bombs planted on people and Holmes had to solve each one in a number of hours(ended at the Swimming Pool),but number 2 was The Blind Banker, with the Asian girl in the museum with the tea cups, decent enough episode but i liked the other two better

FWIW-Episode 3 next week-His Last Vow-,looks really good, and a lot more serious(so probably expect a friggin' cliffhanger again Roll Eyes)

Last nite on PBS they showed a special called Sherlock Unbound. It was a pretty good documentary on the making of the series and showed how they tied in to the Doyle stories and paid homage to a lot of the film adaptations as well. It was interesting how they took a lot of dialog direct from the original stories and adapted it just slightly to fit the modern world. Moffat and Gattis explain a lot of their inspirations and there are interviews with most of the key actors including Moriarity and Adler. There are no spoilers for series 3 so its safe to watch if you havent caught it yet. Its first airing was last nite so its likely to air again soon.

I havent seen it yet but I can understand why it might seem that way after season 2.  They really hit the big three in season 2 with Adler, Baskerville and Reichenbach as their inspirations. And while Baskerville was good stuff, the Adler and Reichenbach episodes were fantastic.  They set a pretty high bar last series.

Advice to those DVring it, check your recording schedule.  It didnt show up on my recording schedule because the show is "officially" named Sherlock Series 3.  I had to re-schedule it or my dvr wouldnt have picked it up.

I was a little disappointed in this first episode.   Not sure why, entirely, maybe it just seemed to not actually go much of anywhere.  Some of it had to do with the lack of a satisfying explanation for the end of Series 2.  Still a disappointing Sherlock is still more satisfying than a lot of other shows.

One interesting bit of trivia:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Sherlock's parents were played by Cumberbatch's actual parents.

As for the bigger arc that seems to be happening:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I strongly suspect Mycroft of being up to no good.  The whole loneliness discussion early on smelled a little too much of setting up motive to me.

I enjoyed episode one a lot.  It did have a bit of a lighter tone and it looks like they are letting Sherlock be a bit more human.  I liked Mary,  its good that they are playing her as a strong woman.  If I had one complaint at all, it did seem that they were trying to be a bit too clever and cheeky this episode.  I just dont want them to go too over the top and push this into the DR Who type of silliness, that Moffat is so fond of.

This is pretty much my impression too. Episode 2 works, but veers somewhat to the side of what we've seen portrayed in the original books. The previous seasons have been very good about feeling like the original books in a modern setting, but this episode went well outside of that.

Episode 3 is outright bizarre at times, feeling like the director wanted to play around with the concepts involved too much. In addition, the solution the episode's problem is disappointingly banal and predictable, which is quite unusual for this series.

Episode 2 was definitely different.  I did like it but it had kind of a weird almost surrealistic pace and feel to it.  There was a good bit of humor in it and it did have one line that literally made me lol. It continues with the lighter tone they used in episode 1 so I fully expect the episode 3 to turn things on its head.  Ive seen a lot of mixed opinions on episode 3 ( just general impressions, spoiler free ) and theres a fair share of negativity about the episode itself.   Im interested to see for myself.  Sad to think the series is done after next week and theres no official word on future series.  Im pretty sure they plan for more but the real question is how long before they do them.

See, now, I liked Episode 2 better than Episode 1.  It is different, so I get why people might have a distaste for it, but I like the premise.  As Moffett says in the cheesy making of doc we get at the end: Watson got married in the books.  You know Holmes was his best man.  What on earth must that have been like

I also like that they pulled off one of the worst best man speeches that turned out to be one of the best, most heartfelt ones I've ever heard.  Plus, it highlighted something that I think is a brilliant bit of character plotting.  The obvious road to go on here is to have Holmes resent Mary, or to have her not wanting John to get tied up in their adventures, but they went the opposite route on both counts, and it's both charming and believable.

I really liked this episode for the character stuff.  Frankly, the mystery was kind of terrible.  I get why people might not like it for that, too.

Thats kind of how I felt about episode 2 as well, Bullwinkle.  The "mystery" wasnt great and the victim was telegraphed a mile away.  But the episode wasnt really about the mystery, that was just the filler.  The episode was about the dynamics of Holmes and Watson and the changes that are happening.  Sherlock is finding his humanity through John and I think thats what really is putting people off on the direction the series has taken this year.  I think the portrayal of Mary is fantastic.  She not only "gets" Sherlock, she completely understands John and Sherlocks relationship and its importance so well that she manages to play both of them at the same time.   I like what they are doing this season and in light of how last season ended I think its a better approach than just having them go back to the way things were.  I think that series 3 will likely benefit from multiple viewings, as theres a lot going on with the characters this time, far more than in the previous 2 series.

Did they ever cover the bank robbers who kept getting off scot free at the beginning?  Or did that just get dropped?

Spoiler for Hiden:
It got resolved off-screen right away. It wasn't really supposed to be a mystery, as far as I can tell. They were finally caught and locked behind bars, but Lestrade lost the chance to be the hero of the hour.

Thanks TiLT.  I had gotten that somewhat, but I wanted to be sure it hadn't been some weird hanging plotline.
