I heard the strangest report on NPR about 'numbers stations' - shortwave radio stations where people just count numbers somewhat at random. It reminded me of the scene in Lost where the guys on the island hear the Frency lady reading over the radio on the island.

Even if you don't like Lost, listen to this, it's very freaky: linky

I wonder if this was an inspiration to the guys writing Lost. Even if not, it's a strange bit of serendipity.

In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

That is indeed odd. The 'mystery' aspect of it is very intriguiging.

Btw, I love All Things Considered, but rarely listen to it (usually only when travelling), but you've reminded me that I can listen to it over the net. thumbsup

That's been around for a long time.  Most people think it's for spies or whatnot.  I've heard it before too and it's pretty cool.  Another type is the bleeping transmitter (that aren't airport transponders) with someone talking in between bleepings.

Get yourself a shortwave radio and you  can hear all that stuff.  I don't mean to talk with, just to listen.  Like the old Grundig hand-crankable sort of thing.

Man, I keep forgetting I can get NPR over the net as well, especially with me not owning a radio.

Okay, after listening to the article and checking out the CONET Project (you can get the 4-CD set as MP3s off of archive.org), that's pretty freaking neat.  Unsettling to fall asleep to, though.
