We'll be hearing much more about this now, apparently 4 years after Carbine Studios was formed by (among others) Tim Cain of Fallout fame and other industry vets.

NCsoft Reveals WildStar and Features Guild Wars 2 Playable
http://www.carbinestudios.com/en/news/ncsoft_reveals_wildstar_and_features_guild_wars_2_playable_8.php

Developed by NCsoft's Southern California-based Carbine Studios, WildStar offers epic high adventure, where players make their mark as Explorers, Soldiers, Scientists or Settlers and lay claim to a mysterious planet on the edge of known space. WildStar's iconic visual style and "Momentum Mechanics" immerse players in a deep world stacked with content, challenges and rewards that respond to the play style choices of individual players. Depending on a combination of faction, race, class, and path, WildStar will present gamers with unending surprises, mini-quests and challenges, ensuring that their experiences are fun and fresh.

WildStar is the product of an awful lot of research into how and why people play MMOs, and it shows. This is a game that's spurting rewards and mini-challenges all over the place and near-constantly, and even in the hour or so I've played, its torrent of gifts and dares seemed a far cry from the stop-start trudging and kill-ten-rats mentality that so many other MMO's starting zones fall prey to. All this is built on top of something that will inevitably draw a ton of World of Warcraft comparisons: this is NCsoft's most concerted effort by far to look Blizzard square in the eye.

What I'm most curious to see is how its play styles combine and entwine on a large-scale basis: how an Explorer can involve Fighters, Collectors and Builders in their remote adventures, how Builders can create a better world, what happens when a Collector is busy scouring a zone for datacubes while his mates fend off any lurking horrors. There's a lot to prove still, given how many promises Carbine are making about this being the "deepest" MMO ever.

Gamespy at Gamescom in Germany

Quote
Along with the slick, hand-drawn art style, WildStar features a "Momentum" meter that gradually builds as players land or evade attacks, granting greater experience bonuses as the meter builds. In short, it's a system designed to reward players who play the game with skill.

The main schtick seems to be that it's an MMO trying to cater to all tastes within one game, but only one at a time. So if you like combat, you have a character focused on that; exploring, you have a type focused on that; another on building; another on finding all the scraps of lore in the game.

Whether that all adds up to fun or just having four "crippled" character types, who knows?  icon_confused Sounds like an interesting take on things at least. It's like a buffet restaurant that asks you first what your very favorite food is, and then they throw everything out except that one food item (i.e, the only thing available to you in the buffet is that favorite food). Is that good, bad or crazy as a game concept? Maybe I'm oversimplifying (maybe it just means you're "best" at one thing but can still do the others?), but that's how I read these early takes.

The look seems a little anime-cartoonish for my tastes (others might say too WoW-ish, but I don't play WoW so you tell me  icon_smile), although maybe it's just the kangaroo-rabbit girl character that has that effect on first impressions...

The trailer looks like a pixar movie I'd pay good money to watch: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/17/wildstar-trailer/#more-69731

Yeah, I love the trailer. Fantastic art design and overall visuals.

Sounds like a fun MMO as well. I'm curious how it'll turn out in the future.

Looks like they'll be having an open beta from this Thursday (May 8th) to May 18th with content up to level 30 available.  Apparently there will be a wipe before preorder head start beings.

More info on their website.

I'm pre-ordered and will at least be playing the first month.  (blame teggy)

The beginning/tutorial/starter parts of the game are so amazingly badly done it's silly.  They will likely turn a LOT of people off/away with the open beta.  If you make it past that the game gets really fun and combat is quite interesting.  Looks like this might be a great game for people who enjoy dungeons, raids and pvp.  Questing is pretty craptastic though imo.

They do have some kind of open world dungeon type events though that are kinda neat and unique.  One is like a tower defense mode, another kinda moba'ish, etc.

All in all crafting, housing, dungeons, combat all seem pretty good.  I personally despise the art direction and graphical style though.

For the record I specifically told him not to buy the game. I even said that the reason I was buying the game was for the platforming, which should have scared him away for sure.

I tried it in closed beta and to my surprise found the game kind of just ho hum.  I was really looking forward to it too based on the videos and previews, but it ended up feeling like fairly standard fare.  Quest in an area until you finish them all, then move on to the next.  Unlike Hark I thought the art direction and graphics were fine, I just wasn't impressed with the gameplay.  It's possible I just didn't pick a suitable race/class combo, sometimes that makes a huge difference for me.  I'll probably give it another chance at release.

This. From what I saw it committed the same sin as every other NCSoft MMO and was basically a blended up smoothie of better games. Nothing we haven't seen elsewhere. I guess if you need another grind/subscription.

I liked the look and hey, I started this thread  icon_smile, but everything everyone says in terms of "you may like it if you're into This or That" just screams this Isn't the MMORPG You're Looking For (at least on my narrow tastes).

City of Heroes is still my all time favorite mmorpg even if only for a short time (2004-2007 mainly), and I used to play and try all sorts of NCSoft stuff. They've just lost me these days.

I played the first adventure this morning which was pretty fun. It was a bit nerve-wracking because I played healer and I've never played healer in anything before. There was some death but the group was nice so no problem. Keeping everyone in front of you while dodging tons of telegraphs is a challenge. Can't imagine what esper healing is like when you have to stand still.

espers are pretty much tab targetting healing though, so they get that advantage along with the disadvantage of stationary healing

I'm liking this game the more I play it.

Had a neat mission where I got transported to this moon, where I'm on the surface of it. I ended up having to investigate a ship that was having problems. And it basically was an alien infestation thing with chest bursters coming from the crew. Was just kinda neat as it was unexpected to get transported there out of the blue.

Also completed a mission where a poll came up right after completing it asking a few questions about the mission as feedback. Kinda neat to see that.

Tried all the classes and the paths (Scientist, Settler, etc). Still not sure which class to pick when the game launches. I kinda like everything but the Stalker. And the Explorer path offers some fun locations to get to. I did like the Settler too where you actually build stuff but I found it annoying that I always felt like I had to stop and gather resources.

The game isn't nearly as tight as Final Fantasy, in UI and gameplay, but I'm in for the launch.

Ah, it was just so sudden that I thought you'd come across some single thing that made the game just not worth playing - especially since you seemed to enjoy the beta's.

I'm going to have one character on a PVP server, and one on a PVE server.    Faction?   Not sure yet....  haven't decided on that piece.    You think most people are going to flock towards the good guys, or the empire/dominion?

They did some surveys and it's looking pretty equal with a slight weight toward Exile. I'm going to join the GAF guild which is pve Dominion.

Looks like Orias at the moment. It's a guild with a core of people from NeoGAF, but since it's not expected to be huge they are welcoming friends and others that aren't GAF members.

Seems a pretty stable pre-launch so far. Logged in this morning, created a character, and started playing right away. The instancing has minimized overcrowding so I'm not really waiting to complete questions in the newbie area. So overall pretty happy. Will see how it goes on launch day.

They are from the Something Awful form, they were orginally going to be on Pergo but apparently Carbine asked them to move to warbringer because of the population on Pergo. The goon guilds usually get really big and they are usually just a giant horde of jerks. If you are Dominion also then it should be fine. Just thought I would throw it out since there is usually stigma that comes with where ever the goons are.

In either case since I'm not huge on PVP the rest of them are on Evindra which is where I have an exile guy and a dominion guy.  I'm in as SkyLander for my dominion guy if you want to friend me.

I also think a majority of dungeons or instances in general are cross realm? I'm not totally sure how that works.

Two good days of playing and have my Warrior up to 15 now. Did not want a Warrior initially as I typically find the tank classes boring to play but our threesome needed a tank so I took it. Hated the Warrior at first. Fights were difficult and the melee range attacks suck. But around L13 started getting in to the groove of things and now at L15 I feel pretty badass.

I'm hopefully they'll work a bit more on the action combat aspect of the game. It generally works but doesn't seem as smooth as other action MMOs. I've had a few instances where I've been in a tough battle and was trying to rotate the camera and dodge an attack at the same time. But my character would just sit there and the game wouldn't even pick up that I was trying to move the camera. Its like the game got confused "do you want to move the camera or do you want to dodge? Pick one not both."

So far nothing good from my Boom Boxes. An Experience potion and some costume shoulder pads. Sucks you can only open 1 every 24hrs.
