Anyone played on a role-playing server in WoW? I was possibly interested in one of the 2 low population RP servers.

I played in one for the Open Beta. I didn't play in another server for comparison but the RP was very nice even without the monthly fee acting as a filter. Most people actively attempted to roleplay, and everyone except for 2 or 3 people (encompassing the whole week) saying crap in general chat were very nice.

I play on them, mostly in search of a slightly higher standard of maturity, but sadly the RP I see is somehow always halfhearted *and* taking itself too seriously.

I'm playing on one now and I have to say the level of maturity is heads above the standard servers. No one is walking around going F you, F that and no one (so far) has names like touchmygroin or bloooowme. The majority of people seem to be there just to get rid of what I said above...a small majority are really into it and a few take it a little too far. Much better overall though.

Do people talk "in character" on global chat? I'm just wondering how the "Level 18 Warlock looking for WC group" type stuff goes.

That's what I mean by halfhearted... you'll still see LFG notes not far removed from that above, but maybe they'll call them seasons instead of levels. There's a decent amount of pure RP chatter, but again, it's like a primary school nativity play.
"Come my brothers, we must drive back the night elves who dare to trespass in our lands."
"Yes, we must! To arms, my brothers!"
"Brothers brothers brothers!"
etc.

Well it still seems to be better than the standard servers.

Yes, I think that might be better than what happened today in the General channel on Bronzebeard.
Went something like this:
Asshat#1:"Shut up Asshat#3, you suck." Asshat#3:"F&#* you Asshat#1, I was talking to Asshat#2!" Asshat#2:"Yeah, you suck Asshat#1!!!!!!" Asshat#1:"U R both gay... U both R SUCKING each other!" Asshat#2:"No, U R. And bite me!" Asshat#1:"Lick my A$$ crack gay boyz!"
It probably went on for some time, but I wouldn't know, because it was followed by me typing in the following...
/ignore Asshat#1 /ignore Asshat#2 /ignore Asshat#3
Maybe I should switch to a RP server. Or not play on weekends.

wow, that is pretty bad. i play on the RP server Silver Hand and it's a cool server. don't get much silly talk over general, and even if people talk ooc at times it's never really out of control or obnoxious. a lot of people do talk in character in the channels, and in person. sounds better than a regular or pvp server and i will NEVER play on one of those judging from the stories i have heard. when i'm paying $15 to have play and have fun, i will not be on a lame server and put up with that garbage.

I'm on Cenarian Circle, and it's RP and low pop enough that you never have to challenge anyone for anything. It's pretty darn nice. Look me up, I'm Ironblade !!

Got my all-dwarven, roleplaying guild, Clan Axepeak, up and going last week. Its not too bad. I do often see names that do not belong, but not too bad. I assume over time they will be changed. General chat seems quit a lot of the time, at least in the areas i frequent (my priest is 31st level currently). Until then, when Burnstuff or Odapain asks me to group, I just ignore them.

My Priest is on Cenarion Circle also.
Nothing but positive things to say.
I enjoy my Hunter (as a class) more than my Priest, but since the Priest is on an RP server and the Hunter is not... I actually end up playing the Priest more.
Roleplaying and maturity go a looooooooooong way.
Give me 'too serious roleplayers' over '12 year old morons' any day of the week.

Why can we never have the happy middle ground, an "I'm here to play this game and enjoy myself" server? No 3x7R33M d00dZ0rZ or 17th century (ooc - you're ruining it for Everyone!) transplants allowed!

Is it possible to copy a character over to another server? Or would I have to start all over again... Not opposed to starting over again as such, but I would like to not have to do all 14 levels again...
Oh, and how is the PVP handled on an RP server? Just like on a PVE?
(Did that sound dumb or what?!?)

No, I don't think it's possible to do character transfers. Maybe some day they'll have that option, but I doubt it will be any time soon. And yes, the RP servers use the normal server ruleset, not PVP.

Sorry, it needs to be said. Not as gay on the server you are on. Because your gayness alone raises the gayness bar on your server 10 fold.

RP Servers = Gay
Sorry, it needs to be said. Wow...that was profoundly ignorant and juvenile. Sorry, it needs to be said. I've tried RP servers in other mmorpgs, and could never get into them. I prefer just to talk normal and play the game. I don't want to put forth the effort of playing in character 100% of the time. With that said, the communities seemed great, people were all very cool, I'm not sure how many of them were gay or not, but that didn't seem to have any impact on the game.

Yes many RP servers in MMORGS are "gay" - if that means people taking themselves too seriously with alternate lives. But in WoW, this is entirely NOT the case (at least on my server).

Sorry guys, I play the game to enjoy its mechanics, not to submerse myself in a world where a bunch of hirsute, overweight male thirty-somethings use their female Night Elf Priest to flirt with every male PC they come across.
In all seriousness, I've discussed and experienced "RP" servers before on many different MMOs. I've come to the following conclusion:
Roleplaying has a much greater chance to be just utterly obnoxious when you're not face-to-face with a person. You'll find a ton of people trying too hard, and you'll find a ton of people not trying hard enough--good luck finding someone who's roleplaying "right" for your tastes.
Roleplaying (just like any kind of improv acting) "works" because it's done in person--as you improvise your character and react to events in-character, you can judge what your fellow players think of your routine. Without the subtle human clues offered by a face-to-face RPG, roleplaying just becomes one player's untested 'acting' theory versus 2,999 others. The result? Dissonance.
