That would be awesome. I love the 40k setting and backstory, but would never play the game itself. An MMO would let me just focus on the backstory.
I hope the combat is along the lines of City of Heroes, with large numbers of mobs to slaughter simultaneously and quickly, with the danger coming from the bigger mobs surrounded by small guys simply overwhelming you. If the gameplay turns out to be "pull ork with lasgun, space marine tanks while everyone else lays into him with bolters until dead, repeat" I'm going to be unhappy.

Even if they let you craft bionic arms Chaz? C'mon.... admit it... if you could craft bionic arms, you'd be IN!

The Astartes don't need to craft arms! The Mechanicus is provided to do such work.
Wonder if you'd be able to create a dreadnaught as a character...
And regardless of anything, there's a good chance I'm IN!

If they don't royally mess this up, even a mediocre sci-fi Warhammer game is worth giving a shot. Maybe will make me break the no-MMO rule.

I have no hope for most sci-fi games....
simply put, they are all done poorly and they just hope since the genre has never been done well they might get the fanboty base to check the game out...
it's not hard to do a bad mmorpg, it's quite hard to do a good one... maybe they will steal the WoW blueprint for ease of use and simplicity while having a semi-decent top end and we'll get lucky, but my guess is, they worry more about keeping people for a month or two then keeping them for years.

What is going to happen is this will force Blizzard to unleash World of Starcraft. They probably have already been doing some development on it. They have everything already in place from WoW to be able to beat WJ40k MMO out of the door easily from a development standpoint.
I would expect a press release from Blizzard within in next 2-3 months.

Well I beg to differ with you on this; Anarchy Online is a very good sci-fi MMORPG. It may not be as easy as WoW -which is too easy IMHO- and it may error on the side of difficulty, but it's still a good RPG. It's Definitely the deepest MMORGP currently out there; sci-fi or fantasy theme based. And it's free to play! Anyhow...back on topic. It's great to see another Warhammer MMORPG coming online. I'm actually more interested the game Mythic's working on as I'm familiar with their approach having played DAoC for some time. The more Warhammer the merrier, so this is good news.

Anarchy online is the only Sci Fi Game I played any longer than the first month... lol... Sirhealalot and Semaj were my guys and Semaj may have been the only 150 all the 200's liked, mainly because on the clan leader channel I did all the "Shut up ya newbs" commenting for everyone else Anyways... once noctum wars came out AO took a big nosedive as far as I can tell... The classic is free... nothing else right?

Last time I checked, yes. But I thought I read somewhere that they were going to pull the free part sometime in the future. Not sure if I'm right on this though.

I haven't played for a while, but I know that free play for the classic client was extended. I seemed to recall receiving an email some time back stating that Notum Wars was now also included in the free play client. I just grabbed this quote on the free play info page: *You can play free of charge until January 15th 2008. Should Funcom deem that server load or other unforeseen events will lessen the experience for paying subscribers the offer will be terminated at our discretion. The free version does not include access to any of the three expansion packs. Should you wish to upgrade to any of the expansion packs monthly subscription and client fees will be added Interesting as there's now 4 expansion packs which might confirm my recollection that Notum Wars is now part of the classic client. I'd agree that Notum Wars wasn't much of an expansion, although I did like the custom voice macroing feature; too bad more people didn't use it. BTW I never got booted due to high server load when I played the free client. Anyways IMHO until you've played the Shadowlands expansion you really haven't experienced all that AO has to offer; it's that good. It also makes it easier to level up your toon since it gives you access to perks.

arise in time for E3. I saw IGN mention this should be at the show, and earlier this year they said they weren't going to try and compete with WoW.

For all the shit you take CK... I'll give you credit for one thing: I don't know how many people would look to see if a 3 year old thread exists on a subject before starting a new one.
I thought for sure this 40k mmo idea was dead and buried. I have to say I'd still be somewhat amazed if it makes it out.

On the date of the OP our little dog had just came through something that almost killed him. He lived another 9 months. I see these old dates and I'm reminded of old times and what was going on in our world at the time. SIGH. Still I would play this. Hell I'd play Imperium

Is that the same title? One looks like the Ultramarines action rpg, and the other has a Black Templar? Either way, awesome.
Edited: N/M. They're different. The mmo video had all kinds of awesome in it: choosing a faction, dreadnoughts, bikes and vehicles, the mechanicum. I wonder if you'll be able to choose a chapter, or if all SMs will be black templars.

From the looks of it, they showed the Black Templars, the World Eaters, Salamanders and I think I saw some Iron Legion. So it looks like you can pick your chapter if you roll Chaos or Imperium.
Didn't see any Eldar, Tau, Necron or Tyranid, but I'm sure they'll all make as PvE content.
God I am so excited, it looks exactly like I hoped...

God I am so excited, it looks exactly like I hoped... Same here, it looks really promising. I would also gladly pay 14.99 a month to serve the Imperium. For anyone that is even a little interested in learning more about the 40k universe, I highly recommend checking out the Horus Heresy series, starting with the first book. Amazon has them all. It's fun reading, and great foundational background to the Space Marines and their different legions and chapters. Cool stuff. It's not going to win any literary awards, but the lore and action make for fast and furious reading.

Looks interesting. I had heard it was going to be a first-person shooter, but at least one of those shots with the HUD up looked like a third-person viewpoint, which is definitely my preference. So this is going on my watch list.

thats two different games- SpaceMarine, which is about the Ultramarines, is a FPS, whereas this is a full-blown MMO

I thought that one was a third-person shooter. For now it looks like Space Marine is a console-only title (imho RTS developers tackling action games is generally a mistake). There's a new trailer, and it is 3rd person -- looks like a Gears of War wannabe. http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/relics-space-marine-shooter-trailedAs an old fart, I'd rather see an update of SSI's turn-based squaddie, Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate ( http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/warhammer40000chaosgate/review.html). Though the original game appearing on GoG.com seems a more reasonable wish. As for 2012, if it's planned for early that year, then a closed beta in 2011 seems quite likely. I was surprised there was so much gameplay video in the initial trailer for the MMO so it suggests they're pretty far in development. So for a change I'll be optimistic.

Well going up against SWTOR in 2011 probably isn't a good move. Oh dear, check this Massively interview... E3 2010: Interview with Warhammer 40K's Mark Downiehttp://www.massively.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-interview-with-warhammer-40ks-mark-downie/#continuedWith that in mind, we're shooting for right now to have the game shipped by the end of Quarter 1 of 2013. Poor Elmo. I don't mean to be a Conspiracy Theoriest but if you read between this... All that we've seen in the trailer is actual gameplay footage?
Mark: Absolutely. ...and this... Now the footage we're seeing here, it's pre-alpha?
Mark: We're not really naming a stage.
So this could change?
Mark: This is all as close as it can feel, game development always brings change, but it's very representative of our intentions. ... So I'd expect the game to look very much like this when it ships. Have at it, conspiracy theorists! No, I mean, I gather what he's saying is the game might look different by 2013, but this is the look they've come up with now.
