>>> How similar are the capture/defend battles to Planetside?

I played Planetside about 6 months back in 2003. The base assault/defend has a somewhat similar feel, but at least so far are strictly PvE (there is a PVP "late game," but it's apparently a work in progress and I've got a long way to get there, and I don't particularly enjoy PVP anyway). And there aren't any vehicles to speak of (beyond dropships dropping in Bane and ASF (friendly) reinforcements, and sometimes Predator Bane attack aircraft get involved, but I rarely see them working on Control Points). It perhaps feels most like Planetside when an AI-controlled AS Mech is participating and going beserk (usually more in the Defense mode, although they can be air-dropped in by ASF dropships).

The turrets mounted along base walls will participate either way (either helping in defense, or pounding you when you assault the Control Point to take it back). Certain CP bases are actually made by the Bane, so those have different structures, and turrets are labeled as "Bane cannon" or something (but they'll still work for the ASF if under control).

Anything called a "Control Point" in a given region can be taken by either players or the AI Bane. Even if no other players participate, there are usually at least a handful of AI-controlled ASF battling one way or the other.

I have to go back to work (sigh) but I can post some more base-defense/assault focused gameplay movies tonight maybe.

It's very intense and fun, but it isn't really the meat of the game. I think of it as "value added," and if you just need a break from missions and Instances, it's an exciting change of pace.  icon_cool

And really, it's often critical to completing some missions. There's at least one mission in Divide (In the Trenches, I think it's called something like that), where you have to meet an NPC inside a Control Point base. If the bane have it, the NPC isn't available there so you can't complete the mission. Over in Palisades, another control point has an NPC giving a mission (and not a defend/assault Tokens mission) once you reach a certain point -- and again, he's not available if the Bane control the Control Point base. Beyond that, all players appreciate having the extra Waypoint teleporter that a Control Point provides when it's in ASF/players hands.

Destructor:  I don't have 20 dollars to my name right now.  Other than money that goes for food... and I'm not starving for 3 weeks just to play a game.  Two weeks... maybe... one week, yeah I've done that.  Not going for 3 weeks though.

Well, I tried soloing Forcaste Prison last night and it's not looking possible for me at level 20 due to that time limit to take out the 4 bunkers at the beginning.  The turret on each bunker just kicks my arse- I can take them down but with full shields up I always end in the red by the time they explode, and the concentration of troops around each one doesn't help.  I didn't notice it on the Wilderness Instances but do they make the enemies tougher for them?  oh, and did anyone do the Prominence instance in the Wilderness?  I totally forgot about it and was wondering if it was worth going back to.

If you paid attention to whispers from people who wanted to team with you, you could probably take the Prison no problem.  Roll Eyes icon_wink I'm not planning to send any more whispers your way (I'm not Don Quixote, and I appreciate that some players prefer to keep to themselves), but if you need help, you know where to find me. smile (Blackjach's 21, and happy to just EMP structures to help out).

Well, I finally got the copy, but I'm a little behind you guys.  Should be on a bit later tonight (if significant other allows) trying to figure out whether I like my soldier or specialist more.  I like the idea of dishing out logos damage, but I'm not sure how well developed the exobiologist is at this point.  It also seems like the specialist has much greater survivability at least at early levels, which more than compensates for the lack of damage.  Oh, and the surname is "Murdox" if you want to look me up.

I avoid Boxing Day sales in my city because they usually have so little to offer. Unfortunately that point of view cost me getting Tabula Rasa for the $10 Boxing Day special price at EB. And just to add salt to the wound, I went into my favorite local EB yesterday and noted a number of copies still on the shelf, so it would have been a guaranteed purchase.  icon_frown
Oh well I still plan on firing up the 3 day trial later this weekend.

Time for me to seek help...

If you're around 20ish and have done the Eloh Temple stuff in Palisades, maybe you can help. I'm going to put my questions in the "spoiler button format" in case it's spoiler-ish to people who haven't gotten that far...

Spoiler for Hiden:
My understanding is that once you complete all four Eloh Temple instances (Rage, Bowed, Proud, I forget what the fourth one is), then you've "appeased" the four wardens, and can continue on into the main Eloh instance. And that you also receive some Eloh key stone that completes another quest in Palisades.

I've completed Bowed solo, and Rage with some much appreciated help from a L24 player last night. But I don't have missions/quests for the other two temples. I've checked all the contacts in Palisades. I've also completed the Warnet caves instance that someonoe suggested might be key to unlocking the other two temple instances.

And no, I can't enter those two other temples without getting a quest to go in there first (I've tried). Any ideas?  saywhat I've asked in chat channels but seem to generally get only disdain or misinformation.  disgust

I do have a couple more straggler missions I can do that aren't instances, but I don't think they sound like they would lead me to the other two temple missions. I'll have to try those though and see.

And "I didn't have any problems" is ... no... help... whatsoever.  icon_neutral That's a common chat channel answer to pleas for advice...

TenTonHammer (I think I mentioned, but some of their quest guides are true sanity-savers -- and the game seems relatively "alt-tab" friendly so I wish I'd remember that. I spent hours trying to finish Comm Tower instance, but the maze is just baffling. After reading TTH's guide, I realized there was a console I needed to hit that activates a teleporter to the level I couldn't reach. But since most of the keyboards on the instance do nothing, how I was supposed to know?  crybaby)... what was I saying? Oh, they have new interview with April Burba (aka the former CuppaJo at CoX forums):

Tabula Rasa in 2008 - An Interview with April Burba

You're definitely going to see us introducing new missions for content that we've already rolled out, especially in the higher level areas. Along with that, you're going to see some new areas coming online as well. You're just going to be seeing more content as we progress in our game development.

In fact, we're gradually moving towards a regular content release schedule that might be a bit more ambitious than what you've seen in other NCsoft titles. We'll have the big releases similar to what players have seen with the Issues in CoH/CoV, but we also want to get regular content to those people that have been in the game a long time and give them the sort of continuous experience that they want to enjoy.
Up to Level 30 or so I don't think anyone can argue there's not enough content (if anything, the amount of quests/instances/Logos searches almost becomes overwhelming), but you can level so quickly in the game they're probably going to have a logjam in the 30s/40s eventually.

I reached the Plateau area last night. It's more rural, with some bases located at the tops of very steep cliffs.

There's a quest to get the Vortex logo (necessary to be able to use the Grenadier's signature ability, "Concussive Wave.") there.

There's a pretty neat, multi-contact quest that involves no fighting. I'm finding it a fun change of pace even if it's probably just an excuse to introduce you to different areas within the Plateau.

Back in Incline I got another one of those "branching tree" type quests. This time I decided to be a nice guy instead of nasty.  biggrin

PAUs (personal armored units, something between a regular soldier and the AI-controlled AFS Mechs) are one of the upcoming goodies, and I stumbled on an old November piece at TenTonHammer about it (they weren't allowing any screenshots/video at that point, just descriptions):

These'll be a reward for reaching L40, with training in five different types available (see NCSoft's blog: http://www.playtr.com/community/community_news/elder_game.html, about the Grendel variant, which has two machine turrets on each arm and a rocket launcher).

Personal Armor Unit Q&A with Starr Long
http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/14711
Quote
The Shiva was the most vehicle-like of all the PAUs. Oriented more like some sort of deep sea exploration device, the Shiva definitely had a unique appearance. With a “cockpit” type area towards the front of the machine, it seems to be apparent that this PAU will function in a different capacity to the Spectre or the Ghoul.

When I saw the Ghoul for the first time, I commented that it looked like a flesh golem; a creature made of mashed together flesh. Large power cylinders extended from one shoulder of the Ghoul, and the entire creature seemed to seethe with power.
Command Opportunity's going to be a level 50 final tier ability that lets you summon and outfit your own NPC squad of soldiers. They probably still have a lot of work to do to have content at L35-40, much less 50 though.

Anyway, that's all sort of old news on upcoming stuff, just hadn't read much about it. smile
================
I hit L30 last night. For a propellant gun, I'll apparently have to either move on to the Marshes (where stores sell them) or sift through the offerings at the Military Surplus auction house.

I thought there would be an abundance of Grenadiers in the higher level game, but I'm not sure I've run into one. Most of the L30+ players appear to be Guardians, Spies, Engineers or Biotechnicians (just based on what I'm running into on Pegasus).

Some big news about a version 1.4 coming soon to test server, including a fix for the awful lag in the Mires zone:
http://www.rgtr.com/community/community_news/feedback_friday_1042008.html
Quote
Update 1.4
We are kicking off 2008 with the new 1.4 patch which includes several new features. Here’s a sneak peak at a few of the 1.4 patch notes before it goes to the Public Test Server.

New Features:
Hybrids – Mix a dash of human with a sprinkle of alien, and see what comes out of the oven. (More details to come soon…)
Hide Helmet Option – Now you can show off that lovely helmet hair, and/or your new hybrid’s Alien face. [This is nice, kind of like the ability in LOTORO to hide equipment/costume items but retain their armor and enhancements]
Attribute Changes – Your Body, Mind, and Spirit were overhauled over the Holiday break. With these changes comes an Ability and Attribute respec. See Paul’s post for details [link to Paul's Post: http://www.playtr.com/community/community_news/feedback_friday_12142007.html]

Important Bug Fixes:
Your mission log should no longer reset when you log out. [hallelujah]
Mires Improvements (see below).
The staff animation was changed (see this post for reference) [link: http://www.playtr.com/community/community_news/changes_to_the_staff_ability.html].

Mires Performance Issues
The Mires performance issues should be resolved with the next update (1.4). In the last few updates we included a number of large technology improvements for Mires; however, its performance is still not in line with our desired numbers.

For example, the creature count on Mires is only slightly higher than desired, but due to the large scale, warzone-like design of the map, there were four times as many creatures in combat as any other map. Mires also contains many locations where both friendly and enemy drop ships were appearing literally within meters of each other.

To guarantee that the performance of Mires is on par with other maps for the next update, we’ve made some changes to the design of Mires that greatly improves the performance without making the map significantly different.

well, last night, at level 21, I traveled back to the Wilderness to check out the Guardian Prominence, and was greeted by 3 level 39ish Banes guarding the entrance  eek  I wonder how many lower level new characters stumbled across that thing only to be obliterated.  I also encountered that big Cyber Xanx spider near there, the one for the quest for the Codex (chuckle) and he was still showing up as green.  I'd say that mission was definitely meant to be a group one when you get it early on.

They are rebooting the servers tonight. Everyone has been complaining about lag in Plateau the couple days, and I guess they believe a server reboot should fix it.  I think the reboot's done by now.

TenTonHammer had a bit on it:

A guy on my friends list who has been pretty helpful pointed me to this fan mapping site:

Tabula Rasa Codex
http://www.codex-tr.net/

This is particularly useful for things like the "corpse hunt" in Pools, if you don't want to resort to sort of "camping" the same couple locations. Also good for finding more isolated quest NPCs you might not run into easily.

http://www.logosatlas.com is the other helpful one I've ballyhooed (when stuck on Logos -- If you use it all the time, I do think it sports of spoils the sense of exploration/discovery in the game to some extent).

It's funny though, that other site I mentioned, I don't think it really has the corpses marked in Pools for that mission I'm on.  icon_confused The only spot I've sort of memorized is just east of The Hermit's waypoint. For missions like that, there's a brief timer of sorts to sort of discourage you from just "camping" the same objective spot repeatedly. But I just am visiting the spot each time I log in, and about 4-5 more times should finally complete that mission albeit in a very lame way.  Tongue

I'm never on at the same time as people here (aside from Sulastani on occasion), but I have a couple single digit characters available to work on. I'm really keeping focus on my 31 just to have some at 40 for when the PAU stuff is out. The instances in the first area are fairly fun and I'd be glad to work on those.

I hate the word, "proactive," but if we're ever getting a GT group together (or if Sulastani and I are even going to get more GTers invited into the informal clan), I think we'll need to set a day and time where we meet up in game and at least can get everyone on the clan member list, and try to do an instance or something. Ya know, be "proactive" about it.  Roll Eyes

If you're playing on the west coast server, most of us here play on the east coast sever (Pegasus), so that's probably part of it, beyond not being able to add folks to your friends list unless they're also online (an annoying thing they supposedly will remedy at some point). I'll probably try the west coast server (maybe the EU server too, just for fun) some time.

*Blackjack wrestles with thread's flight yoke, attempting to steer back on course*
So I thought I could finally finish this unending corpse hunt in Pools by just logging in and grabbing the gun clips off the one near the Hermit waypoint. Alas, when I logged in yesterday, it would no longer let me loot it. So I guess there is some finite # of times you can get them from the same spot, after which, *poof*, no more. I think I still need 4-5 more clips. Although I've checked a couple fan sites, they don't yet appear to have these corpse spots marked (contrary to what I thought). icon_confused

fwiw, I was skimming PC Gamer and their TR review was one of those things where the text was generally positive while the score seemed OK-if-unenthusiastic (72/100). I found it odd the reviewer complained there "wasn't enough to do." I never felt that way until maybe level 31 (my current level), where I've gotten stuck on a couple quests that would probably lead to additional stuff. I assume the guy was reviewing the launch version, but I see so many print mags reviewing betas (in all genres, desperate to get something in print early), that I remain skeptical.

Otherwise, I could empathize with most of his observations and you can't as a reviewer just say "oh the updates will fix/improve/change that."  icon_neutral

There's some word at official site of a modest patch for *test* server next week (it gives some live server release dates for some new things):
http://www.rgtr.com/community/community_news/feedback_friday_1112008.html
Quote
Patch Update
On Thursday we made a new build for version 1.4 (1.4.2) for the Public Test Server. Currently, it’s going through final testing before it hits the PTS. Many of the concerns we had for 1.4 have been corrected in this new version and our goal for 1.4.2 is to have it out sometime next week. When 1.4 goes to PTS, the Orion player database will be copied to the Test Server. Stay tuned to the website for updates!

Patch Note Preview
Added new Operation: Sanctus Grotto (Level 50) Will open 1/25/08.

This Forean spiritual retreat is rumored to contain a hidden subterranean temple containing an ancient and valuable Eloh relic. Join in a desperate race to locate the temple, solve the riddle that will open its seal, and retrieve the relic for the AFS. But hurry, the Bane have also heard about the relic, and they’re racing to get there first!

Chinese New Year
Players will get special treats on February 7th for Chinese New Year. Black Cat, Blue, Orange, Red, and Yellow fireworks will be in your backpack when you log in. Remember – Safety First: Do not light these fireworks with your fire propellant gun!

3 month Veteran Reward
Several players have been wondering what we have in store for our 3 month veterans. Well, if you are familiar with some of the earlier concepts of Tabula Rasa, you may just recognize our first reward, an old school Tabula Rasa “Kirin” mask. Players will also be able to show their dance skills with a /robot emote.
I did, as it turns out, run into a bevy of quests back in Plateau today.

Turns out what seemed a pointless corpse quest in Pools unlocked quite a few additional quests I was unaware of there. There's also one contact who's basically at the top of a pile of junk in one rough base there (The Snake Pit), and it's fairly easy to miss him.

I finally put some time into my Guardian:

I put 5 points into staff. Although they're trying to spiff up staff combat, it seems fairly fun as is. There's actually less clicking than with the guns because a staff blast does so much damage with one firing. And no ammo worries. The Reflection shield skill's very useful but each of the 5 "pump levels" is a different reflection type (laser, sonic, physical, electrical, incendiary), so there's a certain amount of micromanaging which level you use. Once you get the hang of which enemy type does what (the nasty Mox use lightning up the wazoo, so that pump level - 4, I think - is great when fighting those), it's easier to know when to switch types.

I forgot you don't need the DVD in the drive to play this. So when I was putting it away, I remembered I never got around to watching the "Making Of" DVD that comes with the collector's edition.

Watching it, I can only tell NCSoft:
1) Do *not* give your video cameras to (apparently) a bunch of amphetamine-riddled monkeys, who can't stop zooming, rotating, pulling out of focus and fidgeting with the camera. It was cool maybe during the summer of love in 1968, it doesn't really help me get excited about the game.  disgust
2) Do *not* use HD cameras zoomed in closely to many developers who seem to have serious skin complexion problems (hey i don't have great skin, and I wouldn't want an HD camera 6 inches from my face either). If you watch it on full screen mode, you may on occasion cower from your monitor or just get sick.  puke

I got some screenshots from Windows Media Player while watching it. I have to say, the settings I play at, don't look nearly as good as what's in the making-of (maybe it's' the HD-ness):

A fun part is the guy talking about the Lord British character model. At one point he asks a co-worker "What should we call the head of Richard?" I was sure he was going to say "dickhead," but he mumbles something much less entertaining, probably because Garriott was in the same room.  Tongue

Here's the Jan. 17 updated Test Server patch notes (not sure when all this hits live, but it will seriously change a lot of things):
http://www.rgtr.com/news/patch_notes_public_test/patch_notes_117_test_server.html

Way too long to paste in, but thought I'd paste in a few things that made me raise a Spock-like eyebrow: paranoid
Quote
-All players and creatures now have much more Health than before. Health and Armor are now more closely equal portions of avatar and creature total hit points.

-Damage ratings throughout the game have been adjusted to account for new armor values and new health values

-Game balance has been adjusted to be slightly easier at all levels (higher character survivability) and significantly easier at higher levels.
==================
-Two-way squad portable waypoints are now accessible by all squadmates from any permanent or portable waypoint – now you can build your own personal waypoint network on operations maps!

-38 Instances now have a Portable Waypoint at the beginning of them, making it easier for players with Portable Waypoints to go back to the beginning of the instance.

[This is an awesome change imho, it will let them work more like a Diablo-style town portal. Meaning squadmates can join (or rejoin you) within the operation zone that you've placed the wormhole in. Right now, it doesn't work that way -- right now it's only useful to your team if they're all with you at the location you placed the wormhole to start with. But if they're not there with you to start, it's not accessible to them from the waypoint network. I've explained this to many squadmates and they've always been perplexed that portable squad waypoints don't already work this way, so this change is great. smile

By Operations I think they mean that in the Instances, you can use portable waypoints to zip back and forth across the map even if the map has no permanent waypoints on it. Really invaluable on some of the larger instances, esp. if someone croaks and needs to start back from the medic vendor at the start (or sometimes middle). Within an operation, a waypoint/wormhole that you drop is permament, but that hasn't really been all that useful to now.]

-855 missions have had their rewards re-evaluated and replaced with new items. Items previously obtained through these missions will not be changed, but will no longer be available to future players.
[I think this was in response to feedback that a lot of reward stuff was basically junk at the level you would likely complete it at]

========================
-Machine Guns, Leech Guns, Polarity Guns, and Propellant Guns now take lower quality ammunition at higher levels
[Should make those horribly expensive-to-upkeep weapons more useful]

======================
-New Engineer ability “Feedback” replaced Temporary Wormhole. Feedback causes targets to take damage from performing various types of actions.
[Sounds weird. They removed temp wormhole in favor of letting everyone purchase different types at vendors]
=======================
-Signature Abilities now have 5-minute cooldown timers.
[Jude never gets to use Concussion Wave, which requires full power. But it's getting a power requirement reduction so perhaps now even with the timer I'll get to use it more than once a day.  Roll Eyes

==================
-Hunters will now use their net ability more often.
[Cripes! I was hoping they would nerf these bastiges, instead they are getting seriously buffed up...]

===================
Game performance may degrade over time. If this happens, please restart the game.
[Ugh, I smell a memory leak...]

It seems like several under-used powers have received lower power requirements, or faster usage improvements to try to make them usable more often. The only thing worrying me about this mega-patch is it reminds me of far too many City of Heroes/Villains mega-updates that inevitably botched something else up unintentionally while trying to change 793 aspects of the game at the same time. paranoid

The official site highlights some fan forum info on the new player Hybrid classes (and accompanying new quest lines), which are available on the Test Server now. Planet TR probably has the most useful info, and some screenshots.
http://www.planettr.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3001

Much confusion at this point about all this. The Hybrids have various stats differences than humans. There are three different ones (Forean, Brann and Thrax). The Brann one starts in the Mires (where the lag is supposedly fixed now, at least on test server). So it's not something you're probably going to do at Level 1. Maybe somewhere in the 20s.

And yer still humanoid in any of these hybrid forms (you won't get mistaken for a bad guy). It's more a matter of your facial characteristics looking quite a bit different, more than anything else (judging from screenshots).
