I've googled this with no luck. I often see people referring to "hoppers" when talking about Halo 3 but I can't quite get what they are talking about. It it a single game, a certain number of games, a playlist?

hopper is the jump pads that launch you forwards, IIRC.

Wait, no. I've heard people refer to them as that, but Bungie used the term to describe Multiplayer scenarios that were downloadable (eg: Valentine hopper). It's a set of rules, items and maps that are a theme.

I've cursed Kato for "bunny hopping", which is bouncing around the map in order to become a more frustrating target.  Perhaps "hopper" is short for "bunny hopper."

I think it is definitely playlist related. Here is a quote from one of the developers:

Quote
The biggest thing that I can think of off the top of my head: how we set up our [matchmaking setup] hoppers. We changed that quite a bit based on feedback. We'll eventually have cleaner, more pure hoppers, by and large. There will still be one or two that are more mixed. But the feedback on the hoppers in the beta was really quite clear -- it was, "Why am I still playing Team Slayer in an objective-game hopper?" Hey, good point -- why are you playing Team Slayer so much in an objective-game hopper? So we fixed that, and we're paying close attention to that.

I guess it is the way that Bungie refers to playlists, but I haven't heard any other developers refer to them that way.

hoppers I know are used in paintball, it's what stores the paintballs.  It's also used in some industrial cases for machines that both store and load some object into another object one after another.

I suppose they're using it like there's a hopper of maps that get loaded one after another?
