Lol  icon_lol

Dude....  just heard that there really is no open world PVP to speak of, even on a PVP server.   WTF?

The starter worlds have no open pvp. It's the worlds at around level 25+ where things start to get interesting

EST Shien (RP-PVE)

Empire - Kala - Imperial Agent/Sniper (currently 19)
Empire - Cam - Bounty Hunter/Powertech (currently 14)

Also have a smuggler, trooper, jedi knight and both primary sith force classes around 11-12.  Will list more as I decide to continue them or not.

You can right click and add a note for particular guild folks, kind of helpful for matching the swtor character name to a name you're familiar with at GT.

I see a bunch of other folks with notes that have their GT names (very helpful, btw), but the only option I get when I right click is "Toggle PvP Flag".

Gratch, I've tried to promote everybody to recruit, though I think some are set to "member." Once you've got it set to "Lieutenant," you'll have ability to set those notes as you see fit. I guess keeping in mind, the note is apparently seen by everyone, not just you, or me.

There's a pretty short character limit on those notes though, so if someone has multiple alts, not sure we can fit all those mentions. I have tried to put in what someone's GT forum nickname is in most cases.

I'll try to make sure everyone is set to at least Lt. now.

Finally started an alt, still on Dreshdae Cantina:

Server: Dreshdae Cantina (PvE, U.S. East)
Name: Blastowitz
Class: Trooper (L10, debating advanced class choice)
Guild: Gaming Trend Heroes

I thought going through Ord Mantell again would drive me nuts, but the Trooper's different storyline instances is proving just enough variety to keep going back through that zone a little less repetitive (cause I'd gone through it twice in testing weekends).

My Blackjack gunslinger's at L29 now.

We got a few guild teams going now and then, nice to see.  icon_smile

You need an invite from one of the officers.  Your best bet would probably be to send BlackJack a PM here on GT and he can probably set you up.

I've tried to get everyone (I probably have missed some folks' alts) promoted to Lieutenant or at least Member (on my alt trooper, I didn't have ability to promote), and I think either has ability to invite into the guild. Lieutenants can fiddle with the "member note" and "officer note' stuff, which I've mostly found useful for indicating who someone is here at GT forums, or when someone has a few alts. You'll only see the Notes in the "detailed", expanded guild roster view in game.

I finally started a Jedi Knight late last night:

A wee little Gaming Trend Heroes guild characters update (many folks have multiple alts in it) on Dreshdae Cantina server (PVE, East Coast):
[alphabetized]
Aakmyra
Belgard
Blackjack
Blastowitz
Exodor
Isgrimnur
Jaddison
Jacobus
Jeckel
Kaage
OldWolf
Oxberger
Ridgewater
Ryschea
Sendai [my pal from another forum, feel free to invite friends into this]
Shockadelica

NOTE: I really don't recall if we added these last two, I've noted their posts here (if we did add these two, or you're not on this list and want to be added, post a reply or PM me and I'll update this list):
Arrak
Redav
=========
You should be able to send a /w message to any of those folks in-game to get a guild invite. If you're new to mmorpgs, the format would be like:

/w Blackjack Hey jerkwad, can I get a guild invite?
*Or something similarly charming.  icon_razz

At some point I'll post a screenshot of the roster in game (including offline players). With the visible Guild Notes in the detailed roster view, you can more easily see who's who at GT forums, and who (whom?) has various alts.

For the most part, you won't see more than maybe a half dozen or so of us on at the same time. We have gotten some groups going though. So I'm hopeful we'll gather some guild momentum like a rolling snowball. Or like moss on a rock.  icon_razz

I tend to create a new chat tab and disable everything but Guild chat and maybe /whispers, and I'll switch between that and other chat tabs. I know folks think General chat is hellish, but what I've found works is have one tab with nothing but General chat on it -- I'll check that from time to time, mostly to see if anyone wants to do group stuff (Heroics or Flashpoints).

It's a term of endearment.  smirk

Both guild and party chart were working erratically if at all in recent days, and it's a "known issue" Bioware says it's working to fix. On a Heroic4 team last night I had to resort to creating a custom chat channel and asking the other 3 to join it -- it turns out the only way they could do that was to also create a custom chat channel with the same name (we called it "Delivery," the Heroic's called Special Delivery), and then join that. Weird.  icon_confused

(Forgive the GT-OO crosspost, denizens of both!)

Having my usual crisis of class choice paralysis, or "CCCP".

I usually play healers, but always try to break out of that mold when I start a new MMO (usually to limited-to-no success). Tanking also appeals. Here's the overly-brief breakdown of what I look for in a class:

A. Not YADPS. Healing, tanking and/or support when in a group.
B. Self-sufficient when solo. Able to handle large pulls, tougher encounters, bad luck etc.
C. Not reliant on pre-fight setup (max range, stealth, etc.). Optimal is fine; necessary is not.
D. Minimal micro-management and busywork. (I'm looking at you, short but necessary WoW rogue buffs.)

I've made and remade a bunch of characters in the few days I've had the game. So far only a trooper and an agent have made it to 10.

SWTOR makes it harder than most other games because in addition to the usual differences in classes' playstyles, there's the voice acting, storylines, companions and allegiance/alignment too. So far:

  • I think I'd like both Combat Medic and Vanguard for healing/tanking respectively, but the trooper kind of bugs me because I don't generally like the military-bravado-type.
  • The agent kind of bugs me because the sniper is too one-note (req A) and the operative is the opposite -- can't quite figure out how I'm supposed to fight (req C, D).
  • The light side kind of bugs me because it's so obsequiously goody-goody that I can't take it seriously.
  • The dark side kind of bugs me because it's so comically heavy-handed in its evilness that I can't take it seriously.
  • Not worrying about alignment kind of bugs me because the (small but vocal) part of me that is a powergamer knows that the game punishes neutrality, at least presently.
  • The Republic is more relatable, but the Empire is more interesting.
  • I like both the double-bladed lightsabers and the idea of a dark jedi shadow tank, but from the YouTube videos I've watched it doesn't feel or play like what I have in my head.
  • I want to like the Bounty Hunter, avoiding the military feel of the Republic mirror, but hear the story is rather boring.

Help me break through the rebel mental blockade!

I'll likely wont be on for the next few weeks.  I haven't entered my retail code as of yet, and I'm not going to until my new rig shows up.  It's expected to be 1-3 weeks to build, as I took the 5% discount for not rushing it.

Operative is very micro heavy AND requires stealth to solo well once you get to the higher levels.

You sound picky enough that there is no class in any mmo that would make you happy fwiw

Oof, bit harsh! I know that something will have to give for SWTOR but there are plenty of classes in various MMOs that I've loved: Bards in EQ, DAoC and Rift; Theurgist and Paladin in DAoC; Druid and Paladin in WoW.

True, though that was 12 years ago and everything else about it was so good that it made up for it. I assuredly wouldn't have the tolerance for it now. The Rift bard and WoW pally and druid would be the most relevant takeaways from that list.

Edit to clarify what I mean by micro; I don't mind needing to do things on every GCD as part of a rotation. I enjoyed the early iteration of the WoW blood DK as well. By micro I mean having to constantly refresh short term debuffs or buffs, positional mechanics, and the like.

Myself and a couple of friends are playing on Elysium if anyone else is on that server.

As to character classes I have run several different classes up to level 20 and IMHO the Sorcerer/Sage are the best class in the game. Better than average DPS, better than average heals EVEN unspecced, excellent crowd control and great buffs. I would give a slight edge to the Sorcerer A) because there attacks fire quicker due to shorter animations B)Empire story lines have more flavor IMHO.

Running a close second is the Commando/Mercenary for basically the same reasons as listed above. They can heal, do great DPS and by the early 20's they have a good selection of crowd control as well.

Smuggler/IA started out as a fun class to play ( I tryed both) but by level 20 the "cover" mechanic was becoming cumbersome. Also did not help that it's still rather buggy and does not always work correctly. Smuggler/IA is also very niche in PvP as PvP is generally about momentum and having to stop and take cover repeatedly breaks that momentum.

I also ran a Sith Assassin and found stealth, at least in the 10-20 levels to be useless. The Assassin gets one ability that requires stealth at level 20, Mind Trap, which is a 60 sec sleep which does NOT work on droids and does NOT work on targets in combat. Force Lift and Concussion Round work on any target any time. Slice droid is restricted to droids but at least works anytime. Needless to say I was not impressed with the Force stealth class.

I did not try out the Tech stealthers so cannot say how they compare with the force stealth classes.

I also leveled a Jedi Sentinel to 21 but shelved him as A)There are already a ton of DPS'er running around B)I did not like the flow of skills. At first glance it appeared the Sentinel skills had alot of synergy which I found appealing but in actual play alot of the synergy is very conditional and those conditions are not always easily met. I also found the Sentinel to be a little too button mashing for my taste. It is also very possible Im just not very good at playng the class.

I plan to level up a Tank to at least 20 next, I've grouped with both Guardians and Vanguards and was very impressed by how much damage they can absorb, especially when paired with a good Sage. I was also surprised at how much damage a Guardian can dish out for a tank class.

If you like the Paladin type classes I'd say try the Commando/Mercenary. Heavy armor with a mix of good healing and DPS. If you like the druid I'd say try the Sage/Sorcerer, no shape-shifting or stealth but a good mix of healing, buffing and ranged DPS and appears to be the most soloable class in the game.

As for Imperial Agent, remember that the cover mechanic is only really applicable to the Sniper Class. The other class is more about either stealth or healing, or both, and is quite fun in pvp actually. I've levelled one up to lvl 21 now, and it has by far the most interesting story so fart, and a TON of abilities. I've filled out 2 bars already, and have started on the 3rd bar of abilities so careful managing it to your playstyle is essential.

Hey Hepcat, I tried doing a 'who' and adding you as a friend but the game said your character names don't exist

ginvite only works with people currently online.  It wouldn't surprise me if the other commands worked the same way.
The game seems a little inconsistent on letting you add non-online buds to your friends list. I've been able to do that a couple of times, but most times it says "so and so does not exist."

Okay, crafting is just genius in this game.  I find myself looking forward to every crafting mission I send my companion on.  Will he return with something I need?  Or will he bring me back a broken toaster oven?  Good times, good times.

Speaking of which, does anyone in GT Heroes need some "green goo" and other stuff from the archaeology and bioanalysis gathering trees? I am just doing gathering for now since I assume that crafters are going to have to make a lot of crap to get to the good stuff. So if any crafters need/want this stuff just let me know. Seems a waste to sell them for such low credits when someone else can use them to make crappy items to improve their crafting skills.

The only mat I seem to have trouble finding are Fire Nodes.  I have no clue as to how these things are obtained.   icon_confused

As for helping others out, I went with slicing and archeology for gathering skills and artifice for my main craft.  if anyone needs anything from those areas, just shoot Terwin a tell with your needs.  I usually have quite a few green, blue and red gems on hand...albeit lower level ones (i'm only lvl 18).

Fire Nodes come from tier 1 Treasure Hunting Gemstone missions.  You'll need to get them from the Auction House if you don't have Treasure Hunting.

In general for artificing you'll need blue gemstones for blue recipes and purple gemstones for purple recipes all from Treasure Hunting missions.  The blue ones come back from missions pretty frequently, but the purple ones can be rather difficult to get (I estimate about a 1/3 chance of getting them even from a Rich mission) so they're rather expensive out on the Auction House.

Considering a server move to Dreshdae to join the guild before getting to deep in to the game. Is everyone 30+ now or are there a few lower level folks still around, we can probably hit low 20's by the weekend with a little work but if the majority of the guild is already level 30-40 might wait for the first wave of alts? Is there a decent turn out of guild members in the evenings? Would like to be able to run flashpoints more reliably and with just my buddy and I it's getting harder as they FP's ramp up in difficulty.

I would say some of us (at least me) have been playing the game more casually than others. For example, I have no alts and my character is only level 17. And I have seen a few alts already that are spread out among the 30 and under level.

I'm a very casual player as well.  I only have one character (28) and now that the holiday break is over, I typically only have an hour or so a night to play.

I actually haven't even done a Flashpoint yet...not entirely sure what they are.   icon_redface
