So, if you're the developer of Gods and Heroes, and you've just not only shit-canned the game, but declared bankruptcy, what do you do next?

That's right - take the highly anticipated MMO, Star Trek Online, and then tell the world it'll be a 'casual' MMO!

 retard

Via Shacknews:

Quote
Update: Shacknews has received a considerable amount of new information regarding today's Perpetual news from a source close to the company, who requested to remain anonymous. Some information was gleaned from a letter detailing various changes to the company and Star Trek Online, which was recently distributed to all Perpetual employees.

Perpetual has been acquired by new ownership, reportedly a media company looking to use Star Trek Online to make its first major inroads into the video game market. Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star Trek Online to what our source describes as a "more casual" experience, one which may potentially eschew subscription fees in favor of the practice of charging real money for optional in-game items, a practice popularized by various Korean MMOs.

Though there do not appear to have been any significant layoffs with the change in management, a number of Perpetual employees have allegedly left the company due to a dissatisfaction with the new direction the game is said to be taking.

I'm just gonna let this image do the talking:

I predict a steaming pile of suck with a side of ass and a nice hot cup of crap.  Freshly raped apple pie will be served for desert.

Better get a bigger wheelbarrow; you're going to need a LOT of sand.

If it's one thing the suits know, it's how to make a fun game! I'm excited!

I was looking forward to this game, but... I dunno, now if it comes out I'll take a look but I'm not expecting much.

Between this, the Gods & Heroes cancellation and its generally checkered game publishing history, my analytical, thoughtful opinion of Perpetual is that they couldn't find their ...

... oh I'm sorry that wouldn't be fit for a family audience. I just think Perpetual is pretty clueless and they should get out of the games market completely instead of continually hiring and dumping employees (many of whom presumably are talented and deserve better treatment) because they don't know what they're doing from a business standpoint. There, that's the family-friendly way to put it.  mad You know I'm mad at Perpetual because I have never before used the "Angry" emoticon once, much less twice.  mad

find a couple graphic artists and we can make a better "casual" game than they can...

Hell if were doing that, I vote we do shadowrun....

We'd lose the treekkies though... And well if were going pipe dreams, we could use the star fleet battles setup for mass combat ship fighting.

Making the Star Trek MMO a more casual game may just be the thing that saves it.  God knows fighting for the same 200,000 hardcore gamers as everyone else is a sure way to turn four years of development into three months grace before the playerbase crashes because everyone went through all the content in beta.

Hey this could be an awesome MMO if it was on the Wii. You could be beamed up by talking into your Wiimote (communicator) and you could scan the shit out of everything with the nunchuk (tricorder). They'd only need 2 classes; 1.) The Trekkie explorer / tank who shoots and beams up with the communicator and 2.) the Trekkie doc / support who scans the shit out of everything and heals stuff too. At higher levels you could branch into a specialized class that combines both the Explorer and the Doc. Hell I'm so starved for a MMO where I can waggle my wiimote and nudge my nunchuk I'd eat up this casual gaming goodness in a flash.

Oh yeah...this is supposed to be a PC MMO isn't it...sigh.   Roll Eyes

That screenshot on their site has a whopping 321 views. I'm kind of surprised their community isn't bigger.

A well done Star Trek MMO could be my new favorite game. I'm not expecting anything out of this attempt, but I'll give it a shot whenever it's released.

By "casual," I think they mean pants are optional, because clearly that's the one way to guarantee Internet sales.  eek Roll Eyes

Blue's News had a tidbit about a PR firm filing a lawsuit against Perpetual claiming this whole "casual games" sale fiasco is an attempt to liquidate Perpetual and avoid paying creditorss (including said PR firm, who probably was doing PR for the Star Trek mmo, ironically enough):
http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=83396

Between this and the Gods & Heroes fiasco, well, compared to Perpetual, Flagship Studio and the Hellgate launch has been smooth as a cow's udder!  drool Sorry, that metaphor just sort of crapped on my head out of nowhere.  icon_mrgreen If the lawsuit allegations are true, I would completely write off the Star Trek MMO at this point, along with anything else you might've expected Perpetual to churn out. It's sad to see promising IPs get in the hands of a truly financially screwed up publisher.  mad

I'm going on a business trip to Korea in March by the way. I'll report back if I see "Star Trek Video Pachinko!" at one of the Korean "bangs" (online gaming places where someone occasionally plays until they die, and then you read about them on the newswire  crybaby).

BTW, the yellow frog "this image removed due to excessive bandwidth" image is probably about what the Star Trek MMO would look like now, anyway.  icon_smile

If I'm going to be in Star Trek, that's the "James Tiberius Kirk experience" I'd be looking for.  Either that, or getting funky with some hottie reformed Borg chicks.
