TTH has a Q&A with a couple STO devs about the Abilities: (maybe it's just me, but the pages aren't loading very fast for me, fwiw)
http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/76439/

Oh my GOD I want to play this game RIGHT NOW. Reading this shows that the devs really know what they're trying to get into, and that they're trying not to stuff this game into the core MMO 'thinking'. It also sounds like an entirely different game than CO (and dev team for that matter).

The launch date (and for that matter, my guaranteed beta access) can't come soon enough, IMHO.

I have to admit, that does sound pretty impressive. Will have to upgrade before long though after seeing the system requirements.

Here, have some video of the bridges in action, as well as other footage, to make you go ga-ga over. And it's from the Associated Press, so it won't be taken down right away.

Live bridges

Quote
Previously Cryptic stated that they might not be able to let players explore their ship interiors at the launch of Star Trek Online. But they have now confirmed that you will be able to walk around inside your ship at launch. Fan feedback apparently drove that one, as folks made it clear that they wanted to be on the bridge. The bridge will be a social area where you can meet with other players.

"We didn't want to have interiors at launch," said "Star Trek Online" executive producer Craig Zinkievich. "We thought it was just a little bit too much. We really wanted to make sure we delivered a really deep experience, but your bridge not being in the game, it really felt like a hole in the game, and it was just something that we had to put in."

When players design their virtual vessels, they can choose from about 20 different bridges ó like one resembling the command centers aboard the famed Enterprises or the brawny Defiant from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Zinkievich said the bridges will mostly function as social hubs where gamers can hangout with their bridge officers and other captains online.

I assume it can be likened to the homes of other MMO's, which for many people is a huge feature, and adds even more to immersion. I like homes, I like to be able to decoraet them, invite people "over" so to speak, and so on

Never thought of inviting friends over to my office for a social visit........but this is a game.

As long as I don't go to some bridge and see pictures of the kids and the family dog hung up on the bulkhead.

New interview about ground combat.

http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/76794

Ironically enough though, I still feel there's not much info on ground combat.  That part is still Meh to me until I see some improved combat footage.

But the best part of that article for me?

Then there may be a clue to send you to a planet to find out whatís going on. So there certainly is content that has no combat in it whatsoever.

Wrote another letter asking where my beta invite was:

.........

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Cryptic Studios Billing Support.

Star Trek Online is currently in Closed Beta as of October 22, 2009. We are
currently inviting people to join the play test in stages. All eligible players
will receive an email invite to join the game at http://www.startrekonline.com.
Players who are staged for the Closed Beta will see an invite link to join.

For every period of the beta, we have a set goal for the amount of players we
have on the server during any play test. (Internally, we refer to this as our
target CCU, or concurrent users.) This is done to ensure server stability
during the play tests, as well as allow us to gather our beta testers' feedback
in an efficient manner. When we raise our target CCU, we also send out more
invitations. At first, the number of people in the closed beta is going to be
very small. Over time we'll slowly invite more people in order to meet our ever
increasing target CCU.

We will get to all players who are eligible over the course of the Closed Beta.

Please refer to the following forum post for further questions;
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=24059

Thank you for your continued patience and interest in Star Trek Online Closed
Beta.

Sincerely,
The Cryptic Billing Team

And odds are very good that I'm skipping out on Bioshock 2, so I'll be able to fit it in (especially since my 6 month CO sub is due to run out somewhere around there).
