Sounds like some very interesting ideas but we'll see if they can translate it into fun. Permadeath is certainly a risky route to take; the only way that I can see it working is if there's some means for justice minded characters to track down murderin' fools. Seems that their expectation is that the players will set up their own justice and law enforcement systems within the game.

any game that allows me to potentially recreate the world of Solomon Kane (which, admittedly, wasn't old Salem...but still involved puritan type characters) is welcome in my book.

Full open world unregulated PVP with permadeath?  I will state right now this game is doomed.  It will become a haven for griefers.   I like the idea of a Lovecraftian Gothic setting but i have no desire to invest my time in a character that can be permakilled by someone living out their psychopathic desires for murder and mayhem.

I don't think they are going for mainstream appeal. Also, I don't think combat will be the focus of the game.

How well it works depends on everything else in the game. In their other game Haven & Hearth it looks like you don't start over from scratch. Your new character inherits the dead character's claims and 25-75% of their attributes, skills, and learning points. It also sounds like becoming a PK isn't very easy either. You need to learn an expensive skill called Murder. It also sounds like they have provided the right tools you would need to effectively punish criminals.

I think I read somewhere that PKing will be relatively rare, and that to do it you need to invest in the costly skill of "murder".  If they do it right, it could be excellent and really add to the game.

It looks to be a very interesting game. I just watched a vid on how anyone who kills a character will leave clues that can be found by trackers to help bring the murderer to justice.
   
Hopefully, we'll get some more interest in the signups to get several GTers in the beta.

What's the point of ignoring reality? Do a simple search on this forum or anywhere else and you'll come up with dozens of examples of people equating PvP with griefing.

I got the email that I was in the beta and that further instructions would follow. That's been two weeks. The reason I ask is that the Salem forums seem to indicate that the Beta has begun (today, maybe).
