I took it easy this last beta, and only popped in a couple of times.  I don't want the game to go stale for me either.  Looking forward for the headstart!  I'll be on vacation most of next week, so I won't be able to participate much in that beta.

Next beta event confirmed, starting on February 15 at 10AM PST and running through to February 21.

For the most part, I'm skipping that one...don't want the game to get stale.

I'm leaning the same way, may pop in a few times to check out some more souls but that's about it.

I'll play that beta, I'd like to try out a soldier.  I'm pretty sure I'll make a cleric and have a full healer build for it. If release is anything like beta true healers & true tanks will be hard to find.

I wouldn't say my cleric builds were killing machines (although the shaman isn't a slouch), however the justicar / sentinel / purifier  build I had was nearly impossible to kill.  It wasn't the fastest solo-er, but I had to work hard to die (however I accomplished that goal too).  The warden I built up was a great rift healer, I'd load everybody up on dots & spot heal with insta heals for anybody who got overwhelmed.  I only had a few deaths and those resulted in people pulling the bosses before taking out all the minions.

I doubt it.  Once people get alternate souls and specs, there will be plenty of people who can tank or heal.  Those who are good at it, however, may be substantially fewer.    That's really the brilliance of the class system.  If Elmo and I are both playing Clerics and we decide to pair up, one of us can jump into our DPS or Tanking spec and the other can heal.  So even though we may be playing the same class, our roles can be substantially different.

There is one tank spec for a cleric - Justicar - but I have no experience with that soul.

The Justicar can tank. Using Mein Of Leadership they increase endurance 80%, threat generation by 100% (from attacks & heals, not direct taunt), block, parry, dodge, & armor ratings increase 100%, and direct heals and damage are reduced by 40% (although the indirect heals you get on each attack are not affected).

Guild War mages can tank.  Also pet classes can tank a bit.  It's not ideal but sometime it's all you have.  I remember duoing most of the way with a Mage tank in Everquest.  Pet classes in Rift do have taunt so maybe then can do an ok job.

Guild War mages can tank.  Also pet classes can tank a bit.  It's not ideal but sometime it's all you have.  I remember duoing most of the way with a Mage tank in Everquest.  Pet classes in Rift do have taunt so maybe then can do an ok job.

I've read about a Chloromancer tanking, probably wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis though.

That is something I have been hoping for for a long time. If they could balance it with your typical mitigation tanking then it could be very interesting.

I'm not talking about tanking while solo or the like, I mean proper tanking as in a raid or group environment.  I've 'tanked' with my chloro and it certainly wouldn't work in a dungeon.

Actually 'mage tanks' were invented in Ultima Online. I remember how well they worked. I didn't even know what the term meant back then.

Not sure what you mean ck. Most classes tank while solo, some kite, some have their pet tank, but most tank.  Going toe-to-toe with a mob solo as a mage in many games will get you killed fast.  In rift you can solo tank it with chloro due to the heals.

I think what CeeKay means is that the definition of tanking generally is accepted to mean soaking up the damage/occupying the boss for a group.  At least that's how I've always understood it.  Hence "solo tanking" is somewhat of an oxymoron.

EVGA GeForce GTX460 SE inbound for Rift go-live! My old 8800GT did fine (25 FPS), but tended to get overloaded with a lot of people in a warfront. And I got envious of the awesome screenies people were producing. The game looked pretty damn good, but not as good as some of those screenshots. When I saw it on sale for $160 (with another $20 off on rebate later on), I jumped on it.

Yeah, I'm getting jazzed up for Rift. But me buying a piece of hardware prior to a game's launch for that game doesn't have a great track record. The last time I did it, I bought more RAM for...Ultima 9. Run for the hills!!!

I just don't care for the Guardians, tried it out last beta and got 4 guys to 20+.  Prefer Defiant by far
