Hark and I have been playing EQ2 the last couple days.    I could see myself getting back into this until Warhammer comes out.   AoC is garbage code and won't downscale to my PC even though every other title on the shelf including Crysis is able to do so.

Anyway.....   EQ on a PVP server is a blast.   Join us!   We're still low level.

Have fun, gang.

I still think EQ2 is the best "recent" MMO. However, I ended up getting burned out on it. 2 years in a hardcore raiding guild = you've pretty much seen everything, done everything, and owned everything. A couple of the expansions are new to me, which might be fun to tinker with, but I don't think I could go back to it full time.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone burned out on WoW. To me it was just a deeper, more satisfying game all around.

I'm still playing on Oasis. The Wizard is up to 71, while a couple alts are in the 30s. Been crafting recently though.

I'm REALLY hoping there's more "middle" zones in the next expansion. Or another character slot. I need another alt.  icon_biggrin

I never tried the PVP servers on EQ2 - are they really any fun? or is it just mindless being ganked upon as every other MMO PVP server?

I like EQ2 actually...fun classes and great looking game

Is there any sort of free trial for this game. I played about a year ago on a free trial when that Fairy expansion came out, but haven't been back since. I would like to give it a try though.

If you ever played EQ2 or EQ you can play for free until August.  (I think you had to have played a purchased copy)  That said I do believe there is a trial available now too, but not sure where off hand)

When EQ2 first launched, everybody bitched about how they couldn't run it, just like they do with AoC now. It scales well because it's 3 1/2 years old, not because of some genius programming.

A previous trial account will work as well.  As long as you remember your login/password.

Huh? EQ2 doesn't even come close to scaling well with current technology. Thankfully it can scale down (unlike Conan).

90% of the game is rendered via your processor.
The game doesn't support dual-core or up processors.
You actually get WORSE performance if you go from a single core 3.0ghz to a quad 2.4ghz.

EQ2's engine was designed figuring that computing would go towards very fast single core processors. It has absolutely NO multi-core features, and it pretty much ignores your video card due to its really funky engine. Things like shadows and lighting are rendered entirely on the CPU, among other things.

Thankfully the game itself is solid. The engine that runs it is absolutely horribly out of date.

That doesn't help me much since I have never played an EQ toon past lvl 5. I usually prefer either warrior types or spellcasting types. But is there a class that is really fun to play in EQ2 above all the others?

Well that's a very subjective thing.  I've played 3 classes to 30+ and a ton to 20, they are all fun in their own right, and played totally different.  I'm now playing a defiler on pvp and coercer on pve and they are totally different as well.  The coercer is a challenging class with it's mezzes and stuns and paper thin protection.  The defiler is a great support class but kinda a pain to solo.   I can't really say what you would find the most fun.  I'll break down the melee classes for you since you enjoy those...
Guardian:  Pure tank, best in game at it.  Low damage output good protection buffs.
Paladin: tank + heals/buffs not great at either but still interesting
Bruiser/monk:  DPS melee w/ light armour uses evasion and doge.  Can still be a viable 'tank'
Shadowknight: Tank & debuffs/dot etc.
Berserker: Heavy armor dps tank takes a bit of a beating compared to rest.
All can work as a tank, all have some sort of group buffs.  These are very vague descriptions.  I encourage you to read some class descriptions and just go for what sounds good.  All classes are useful in grps in some shape or form.

I'm hoping to get on tonight. I have literally been downloading the game and its patches since Tuesday night. I have DSL but it is slow DSL and I had to completely DL the game. The patching system sucks. It has completed three times now and stopped, only to go back in and download even more patches. So there is a ton of lost time waiting for me to get back home to restart the patching process. If they would have set it up just to DL it all at once I probably could have been playing on Wednesday.

EQ2's patcher is...less than efficient. Sometimes it'll just completely stop, forcing you to restart it, while other times you'll want to restart it anyway as the download speed has gone in the crapper.

To put it bluntly - its been a constant complaint from the players for years now.

The beta launcher is great.  It even has a friends feature that tells if anyone from any of your friends list is in-game at the moment and lets you chat with them.  The only problem I still have with the patcher process is that EQ2 still requires a pretty long file scan before it lets you play.  You would think they would have implemented some kind of simple file database or list that could be checked instead.

I rolled a Troll Knightmage (I think that's what his class is called) last night. I must have just missed you because I signed off around 10pm Est. I did add you as my friend though.

I can't for the life of me remember what my toons name is right now. For some reason the game wouldn't let me use any name that I typed in. It kept telling me it was an invalid name. So I had to go with one of their random names.

The scan for EQ2 doesn't take me long at all, maybe 10-15 seconds.  AoC definitely is a problem and the scan can take over a minute and on a few occasions as many as 3-4 minutes.

This problem went away when I turned off the user access control in Vista.  I occasionally still have it with the beta patcher, but I stopped using it because of this.  Haven't had any issues with the original launcher since.
