BTW -- it sucks having a 360 sitting there with no HDMI output. There is a very big noticeable difference between my non-HDMI 360 and my HDMI PS3. I would get the 360 version, but I really want to see the game in all it's splendor first with the HDMI video.
What kind of cable are you currently using for your 360? Component. But I could tell the difference in a big way between MW2 PS3 and MW2 360. Could that be because MW2 was capable of 1080p and I was seeing the difference between 1080p and 720p since I couldn't go full rez on the component 360? That would mean that if Red Dead can only do 720 anyway, I definitely wouldn't see much of a difference? MW2 is nowhere near native 1080p. In fact it's lower than 720p. Then why did it specifically say 1080p on the back of the PS3 case? Edit: ok it apparently is 600p. wonder why they advertised it on the case as 1080p. Also wonder why it looked so much better on my ps3 than on my 360 with it's component cables. That leads me back to thinking that the HDMI cables are that much better than the component 360s. might be a stupid question, but are you 100% sure that you had the HDTV switch set to on on the 360 cable? otherwise you were actually playing with composite... Good question. I will investigate. |

The main disadvantage of component is that the HDCP copy protection stupidness won't allow HD video to be transmitted via an analog signal. DVD upconversion is limited, as is blu-ray output. Video games don't fall under the HDCP stupidity, so they can use component cables for all their worth. Component cables are even capable of doing 1080p, but not all TVs will accept the signal.
We're talking about games in 720p, though, and unless you're an eagle-eyed videophile you'll be hard pressed to notice any difference in quality between component, VGA, or HDMI video (aside from oddities that sometimes happen with the way TVs handle VGA input).

Doesn't hurt to try both. Maybe check your input settings on your HDTV too. |

Just to be super sure...  You're using the red, green, and blue cables on the left for video, the red & white cables on the far right for audio, and not using that yellow cable for anything at all? |

Nope. Not at all. The only game I've ever installed is MW2, and that was just because I play it so much I figured I might as well install it. No airports here. It depends on the machine and I'm guessing more do than don't if they have the space available. Me, I can't stand the noise from the DVD drive on my older Elite so I end up installing everything I'm actually playing at any given time. And 600MB for the PS3 install is pretty small nowadays when they're routinely measured in gigabytes, it seems.  FWIW, I've got this coming for the PS3. |
