What a difference watching tutorial videos makes!
I spent some time watching videos explaining the map and more importantly how to choose your spawn points and redeploy. Also, I spent some time in game without joining any squads and just walked around the warp gate. I noticed that the galaxy transports spawn outside on the ground. So, with that I insta-joined a squad.
A good squad leader also makes a hell of a difference. My first time out our squad leader did not talk much except to say things like "come on bravo squad, we need to get to our galaxies." And on our first game the platoon leader did not talk at all. The squad leader from my first game also made disparaging remarks like "just take off in our galaxy. Leave the retards behind." Way to build morale for the new guys, dude!
This second go-around was much different. The platoon leader would give all of us the name of the objective and how we were going to get there. Then my squad leader would clarify that for our squad AS WELL AS throw out squad spawn beacons. So much easier to figure out where the hell to go. I managed to get in on a platoon sized galaxy drop on a Vanu-held tech facility. We held it and converted it to NC. I was playing a combat medic and generally staying inside our objective, only straying out to revive dead guys. I guess my squad leader liked me enough to invite me to their outfit. So now I'm part of Phoenix Battalion
