I'm not entirely sure it even matters.  I have read plenty of negative innuendos on different forums.

Such promise too...   icon_cry

It says the NDA is still in effect.  I downloaded it 4GB last night; installed it this morning and now its updating.

One of the notes at the initial login screen says

Swordfighting sucks right now

ship combat works very well and should be fun

I was having trouble getting in as well, but had a small taste of it on Thursday. Made the mistake of picking merchant and got owned by 2 NPC pirate ships. frown

I think I received a notice to join the open beta a while back but I've lost interest in MMOs for the time being.

The POBSA Vault has an interesting "tour" article (reps provided "guided tours" of areas, some not currently available in the beta or quite completed yet):
http://potbsvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Articles.Detail&id=65

The actual ship to ship combat seems quite refreshing. The "avatar combat" not quite so much. I hope to give it a go at some point though.

It is, until you realize how shallow (icon_twisted) it is compared to an Age of Sail game. It's barely more than "Pirates!" switched into an mmo with individual cannonfire physics stripped off.

Only 156 hours of downloading to go.  Clearly they are using X2Flex 128k modem doublers to push this game out to me....sigh.

The NDA's down, so we can say anything.  I think the ship combat is really fun, but it just takes too long at times.  Too much mop up time when you already know victory will be yours.  The avatar combat is terrible.

The game isn't bad, it's just not what I wanted (and what the previews/interviews indicated to me). The game's design is what I question; the execution is mostly good for the sailing & ship combat insofar as living up to the design.

I do want the game to succeed, I just wish they'd stuck with their original design plans. icon_frown

Care to explain why? I never found the time to dive into the stress test.

Avatar combat sounded really neat in previews.  Shifting balance, different stances...in practice the strategy is just pressing 1 until the blue bar goes away, then pressing 2 until the red bar goes away, all while having horrible awkward animation.  No fun at all.

The ship combat is really neat at first, but it takes too long and after you get used to the mechanics it only has an incrementally higher complexity than a Pirates! battle.

I didn't get far enough to dive into PVP, one of its big selling points, but from what I heard it pretty much boils down to everyone getting the same best ship and attacking in packs.  I wanted there to be a variety of viable end-game ships, with even more variety of unique customization on each ship depending on the player.

Add in a couple more negatives, like the weird lottery system for port battle participation, and lifeless port towns that look identical...it's just all there.

It's not a horrible game, but it just doesn't do enough right to justify a monthly fee IMO.  It does a really good job of making me want to reinstall Pirates! though!

I wanted it to be so much more than it is. As said its not horrible but it is bland and becomes boring fast. In fact its so bland that I was looking forward to trying it before I got into beta and now I find myself thinking of getting Tabula Rosa and I found that to be a snore fest in beta too smile

The economy aspect of this game seemed to be pretty huge.  I played a Freetrader a bit in the beta and only scratched the surface of it.  I found several recipe books by taking down pirate ships in the open sea.  I think they did a great job on the economy aspect.

I agree with the rest of what people are saying.  Avatar combat is a bit boring.  Ship battles are well done but can get a bit boring.  I did a few group missions and really was fun taking on 12 ships with 4 other players.

I think a lot of this game would rely on having a good group of people to play this game with.

Wonderpug nailed everything I think about the game, and far more concisely than I could've written it. icon_biggrin

It was originally one of my two most wanted games going into 2007, and now it's dropped completely off my sonar.

I've been meandering my way through the QT3 thread HERE.

From what little I have gathered, the guys there are having fun with the game based on two things:
1. Grouping up with others and doing stuff (ship combat related it sounds like) is quite entertaining.
2. The economy-system in place being quite deep and potentially very enjoyable.

I have not tried the game at all, and actually know very little about it other than the things I've read, but it sounds sort of like "EvE-Light on the High Seas".  If that is true, perhaps there is hope it will turn out to be quite a good investment after some initial tweaks are made.  I plan on keeping my eye on this.  The economy sub-game of EvE is one of the things I enjoy.  That being said, I'm not exactly sure how promising it is when one goes to the official forums and sees that there are more posts in the KNOWN ISSUES Sub-Forum than any other...   icon_confused

I hope you guys that dive in continue to post postives and negatives as you play.

A few buds at the forum I used to hang out are into this and have already pre-ordered (a couple even declared they're quitting LOTORO to move to this).

I pointed out a Gamespy preview:
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/pirates-of-the-burning-sea/846350p1.html
It's pretty rave about the game's concepts, esp. the "meta game" that encourages PVP and PVE players to work together to some extent.

The folks at that other forum say they're not seeing the bugs the Gamespy impressions complain about. They agree the game seems for more advanced players and isn't as "pick up and play" as other MMOs on the market (but they like that about it). I'm trying to point out that they're just saying if you want a mass audience you need to try to cater to both advanced and the players that might prefer a little more hand holding and tutorials. I think they're going to argue with me about it. Now I remember why I don't hang out there so much anymore. slywink

The funny thing is I started the PotBS thread over there.  icon_neutral I got into the beta test even (late). But I had/have too much fun with Tabula Rasa to pay attention yet. smile

I'm sure I'd enjoy the ship combat (Hey, I bought Age of Sail smile and Enigma Rising Tide for crying out loud), but how is the avatar/melee type combat and boardings? That's the part I've been unclear on as to whether I'd enjoy it or not. icon_neutral

I noticed at the official site they announced a bunch of bans for gold selling already. Yeesh.  mad

The avatar combat is pretty MEH.  You hit some buttons and try to unbalance your opponent then attack for damage.  For my freetrader in beta it was pretty much block 3x then hit him once I had the pistol skill I would open up by shooting them at range once then melee, shooting unbalances you for a moment.

As most have said the economy certainly is huge and no one trader can be 100% self sufficient.

The ship combat is quite nice, repitive but nice; group combat I thought was really fun.

Grouping (as in most MMO's) makes a huge difference.  Much more fun when Kato and I were running around completing missions together vs. me running around on my own.

I got sucked in by various forum effects, not that I wasn't anticipating it, but Tabula Rasa was holding my attention, that is until NC Soft managed to screw up my billing...so I gave this a try.  Performance issues aside (I am playing on an older rig and there seems to be a nasty memory leak, although the most recent patch supposedly addressed some memory leaks), so I had a few hard crashes this weekend.  Anyways, I am having an absolute blast.  The economy looks to be very deep and there is just something satisfying about overtaking a french merchant ship that is carrying a much larger and more veteran crew than I am, thanks to me having much more manueverability.  I am not very far in yet, only lvl 12 but have loved every minute so far.  Oh and back to performance... other than the memory leak I am playing at 1600x1200 and the game looks great.  I am on a plain jane P4 3.2 ghz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia AGP GeForce 7800 GS.

Thanks Arkon.

The thing I am probably most intrigued by is the economy, since I Love (with a capital L) the nearly 100% player based economy model of EvE... I'm guessing I'll also love it in this game.

But even though that is what intrigues me most, I am most interested in how ship combat plays out.  Has anyone played the starfleet command series for the pc?  (those older games by Taldren).  Is the ship combat similar to that in execution?  If it is, it will be tough for me to stay away.
