a persistent sandbox MMO, with Gian Robots! PvP sounds like it will be interesting if they get a good player base: Large scale PvP is one of the things we’re very much looking forward to. The point of owning territory will be the resources found on that land: be it materials, fertile ground, high end NPC-s, there will be lots of things players will want to get to and from where they will want to keep other players out. To this end you’ll be able to build settlements with complex infrastructures, and even terraform the land around them. In Perpetuum you literally will be able to move mountains. Think trench warfare and mix it with RTS style settlement building.

Whoever designed the UI for this is a big fan of EVE.
I'm keeping an eye on this one, but I'm not a huge PvP fan, so that may kill it for me.

Looks like they are letting about 600 people into closed beta every couple of weeks. I signed up and will post impressions if there is no NDA.

OK I'm in the closed beta and there is no NDA .
Only had time to make my first character (you can have three per account) and do the brief tutorial that walks you through movement, combat, and mining for ore. Reading the beta forums now.

I got into the beta a few weeks ago. Its an alright game I guess. Its an Eve clone in every way imaginable. That can be both good and bad. Its good because it can build upon an existing and proven framework, but its bad because not all the mechanics translate to mechs very well. Targeting for example, in Eve it makes sense that it would take 5 seconds to target something when you are in space and the target is 20 kilometers away, but in Perpetuum you have the same delays and your target is about 50 meters away. Also, without warp the travel times in Perpetuum get tedious. Its also hard to justify playing Perpetuum when Eve is more advanced, better developed, and already has a huge subscriber base. It reminds me of all the WoW clones that are struggling to keep players since there really isn't any reason to play them instead of WoW.

Well people who start playing EVE now will be millions of skill points and billions of ISK behind long time players. So some might prefer to be first to start a new game where they have a chance to be top dogs. Also it *may* be cheaper to play than EVE but that is just a guess right now.

A couple of screenshots attached. One shows my bot with the UI on and starter base in the background. The other shows some of the local flora with most of the UI off. I've completed two starter missions so far. Sold most of the loot and have about 125K NIC (gold). The most expensive bots go for hundreds of millions of NIC I think. Even buying a basic module for harvesting plants is about 55K IIRC. You can get loot (forget the name now) that you can use in research and after you use enough of them you will gain knowledge of how to make some items. It appears that the research results are random. I have enough knowledge to make a bunch of low level stuff (ammo, weapons, mining modules) but my industrial skills are poor and I still need other mats before making anything. My sense is that getting started in crafting will be a slow process. So far there is not much twitch to the combat. The starter area has one kind of mob only (drones) and they will gang up on you if you aggro one. Have not died yet but just started playing yesterday so give it time. There is insurance you can get for your bots but you don't need it for the starter bot because if you lose it you can get another free. It's possible you can lose modules or cargo if you die. Not sure how it works yet but pretty sure in PvP if you are killed and nobody friendly is nearby to recover your stuff then some of it can be lost. Not sure about dying in PvE and whether you can get back quick enough before your stuff goes away or becomes lootable by anyone.

Well, I started playing this, and Huw is there as well.
Its very much like Eve, just with Giant Robots and its quite fun. I'll be starting a corp tomorrow or so - Huw and me are both industrial types. I can be found in the Qt3 chat channel, or as Razgon Ap Taj in case anyone wants in :-)

update: dumbshit award goes to me...I had an illegal character in the password but didn't notice the alert at the top of the form until a long time later, lol
I went to create an account but about 20 tries later I cannot get the form to accept the characters or I can't figure out what the characters are....man do I feel dumb. I tried listening to it and can't figure that out either.
So are hte two words typed together or with a space?
