Sounds really cool.

Man...just imagine a Fallout based MMO...

After reading up on it, it really DOES sound like a Fallout based MMO... *drools*

It took me a minute to realize how far back this thread goes. Its nearly three years old!

I am really looking forward to this game as well. More than just about any MMOG coming out in the next year. A deep crafting system, skill based combat, vehicles, it sounds too good to be true.

I blame Daehawk. He necro'd a three year old thread in the wrong forum, just to brag about another beta invite.

Someone get some rope smile

the oldest post I can find in here is this one, with the last post in it dated November 02, 2004, 06:56:38 PM, so it's been around for awhile unless you guys went through and moved every MMO related post into here.  oddly enough that date is about a month after Gone Gold died...

looks like September 9th will be the release date for this, which firmly puts it in the 'not trying until next year' category with everything else being released.

Playing it sometime next year sounds about right. Its probably going to be an awesome game once they get combat streamlined and all the content ironed out. I love the crafting system and persistent vehicles. So much fun.

Just out of curiosity, did you play it long enough to get a mount and complete at least two towns? Until you actually experience the game's strengths it easy to find fault with it. The first few hours are pretty rough.

no, had gamestopping bugs two different places that made it impossible for me to advance, so..my impressions are based on the intro of the game, which was, to be honest, horrible both in terms of stability, bugs and graphics-wise... but thats just me :-)

Yeah, the first time I played it would crash every 5 minutes. I figured out it was because of first person mode. When I quit using it I could play for an hour or so before I would bug out on something else. That is why I wouldn't touch this game before next year sometime. You know the game won't be that buggy forever.

After they get it all worked out there is some really cool stuff. The map is quite a bit bigger than any MMOG I have played before. The crafting is the best I have ever seen. The persistent mounts/vehicles (they stay where you leave them) add a lot to the immersion. The combat could be good once they streamline it for about 6 more months, but right now its kinda clunky.

I hope they got their engine together by the time the open beta starts, because a lot of people really seem to like it...would be a shame to disappoint by game stopping bugs :-)

Indeed - especially, if those are game-stopping bugs 15 minutes in the game as there was a month ago...

Fallen Earth is apparently in open beta with registration in Fileplanet

http://forums.fallenearth.com/fallenearth/showthread.php?t=16082

It is rough around the edges and could use more polish and code optimization but I am having fun with it.

FE launch has been pushed back a week.  Probably a good thing as it's bound to improve the game.  I joined the open beta the other day and the game is growing on me even though I don't meet the minimum specs.

If this game had a real UI and some more polish, it could very easily be a great MMO. There seems to be some good ideas behind it, and the setting cant be beat. But christ, the UI sucks, the mechanics are sloppy, and it just feels disjointed. Want to love it.

I feel ya.

There are some good gameplay ideas, but it's very clunky. If this had been released several years ago I think it might could have made some noise, but the overall execution comes across quite dated or just plain generic in comparison to anything recent.

Guess I'm easy to please.  The UI is a bit crude perhaps but "sucks" and "least intuitive and most complex" seems a bit harsh.  All the information is there with mouse over tool tips for many things.  You can move the windows wherever you want them.  I like how many of the windows "fold up" like a shade so you can see behind them without having to close them completely.  To each his own I guess but the UI wouldn't be a game breaker for me.

100% of my time in a game has to do with dealing with the UI, so when it feels clunky it makes the underlying game feel clunky.

There were also several mobs that I would hit and do no damage to even when they bleed when I hit them they just stand there, that was odd as well.

Just curious about what makes it clunky for you?  Your other point sounds like a bug so hopefully it has been reported.

Reasons why I think the UI "sucks" (not sure why we quoted sucks  paranoid)

1) Almost a carbon copy of the SWG interface.
2) Hides too much important info past 2 clicks
3) Visually nothing in common with the game I am seeing
4) Orange and Black are bad combos for most monitors, as most are uncalibrated properly
5) No reactions to an action I took, like equipping a weapon
6) Crafting, Rag-doll, and Quest inventory is all mixed together into a giant bag with no color coding or ability to separate past hovering over.

Basically the whole things needs some quality of life improvements. An MMO asks a user to play it for months at a time, and as such, needs to cater to them, not force them to adjust. WAR's interface, while poor originally, was so customizable that it succeed. And there's a reason Blizzard has integrated so many mods into the default UI. Fallen Earth seems to have learned none of these lessons, which I assume because its been in development for 8+ years.

Again, I want to love the game, but the game's UI doesn't love me back.

I quoted "sucks" because that is what you said about the UI but it doesn't really tell someone interested in the game what is wrong with the UI in your opinion.  There are supposed to be several skins for the UI other than the default but they are not working from what I can see.  I bug reported that clicking on the different UI choices did nothing.  Haven't had any problem getting needed info in a couple of clicks, but maybe I'm missing out on some  important info.  Agree that our inventory needs some work.  So I agree there is plenty of room for improvement, and I too want to love the game.

Edit - I would urge you to post your suggestions for improving the UI in the beta forums.  Seems like the devs are listening.

Pharaoh - I was just fiddling around with my pack and found that you can make tabs for various types of items.  First click on the Item Filter (just below the X that closes the pack window.  Then make tabs for whatever you want by checking the appropriate category for each new tab.  I made one for Tradeskills and one for Missions and it put all appropriate items in the proper tab automatically.  Very handy.

I'll do that...you are very right, it does me no good to just complain without trying to proactively fix it. I think my zealotry in annoyance with the UI is that the core game itself has so much potential, I hated to see such vital elements keep it down. That and I design UI's for a living and seeing one so flawed pushes the wrong buttons. I think I'll apply to Icarus as a contractor and send them a complete wire frame pass  icon_lol

Yeah Icarus was imprisoned and died trying to escape.  Maybe the devs are trying to help us escape the WoW and WoW clone rut with something different.  I hope Icarus succeeds in helping us all escape this time.

hmmm.....I have only 2 gigs of ram. Minimum requirements for vista is 3 gigs....will 2 be ok? or is it really a minimum of 3?

The game looks great, so i just about pre-ordered it, but....if I really do need 3 GB, then it would be a waste.

Anyone have any idea?
