Chalk this one into the 'about time' category: BILLUND, DENMARK - June 7, 2007 - The LEGO(R) Group today announced LEGO Universe as the official title for the upcoming MMOG being developed by NetDevil(R) to further engage the company’s dedicated and active community. LEGO Universe, currently planned for launch in the fourth quarter of 2008, is designed as the first MMOG professionally developed for LEGO fans and supported by community members from around the world.
"LEGO Universe ties together all aspects of our community and line of products in an online environment that can be enjoyed by LEGO fans of all ages," said Mark William Hansen, Director of Business Development, LEGO Universe. "By merging the online world of social interaction with the LEGO concept of play, LEGO Universe will provide our community with an entirely new way to experience LEGO and connect with other players in a fun and imaginative setting."
The full-featured MMOG will be complete with character advancement, expansive social and community features, and will provide a child-safe alternative to other MMOGs on the market. As a player, you'll be able to customize your mini-figs and interact in the universe as any character you choose, providing unique opportunities for players to expand and explore with their creations.
"LEGO Universe is being built as a place where fans and community members can discover nearly unlimited play possibilities," said Ryan Seabury, NetDevil Lead Producer on LEGO Universe. "Given the strength of the LEGO community, a large part of bringing the game to life will be working hand in hand with them to ensure that the core values of creativity, connectivity, and imagination are reflected in the end product." I can't wait to see what becomes of this MMO. Even if it is a 'child-safe' game. EDIT: Finally decided to fix my Engrish is hard spelling problem.

It would be awesome if you could build your own cities and buildings by buying the blocks with some monetary system that is ingame. Farming for your new car or house Oh man

I know this is the official announcement, but didn't we hear about this a few months back? I know NetDevil had commented on it previously and was hiring for the project.
I can see some real potential in this one. Hopefully they also put in some of the humor that Traveller's Tales have put into the other LEGO games. That added some good character.

That was pretty much why I decided to post upon it. I've heard things about it before, but now it's officially confirmed and all that jazz. And besides - this forum needs to be talking about LEGOs.

'WTB parts for SNOT building! PST!' Still..I'd like a Second Life style system where I could adventure in the various zones (Space, Town, Castle, Technic, Bionicle, etc) to earn brick purchasing power. then I'd build my space station on the moon!

Here, have a link that seems to show what 'direction' they're taking the whole thing. In other words, 100% CGI whatnot: http://www.gamersinfo.net/content/news.php?id=631

Somehow you just knew they were going to take the tired old route of rendering this computer game 100% in CGI. What happened to innovation?

That looks pretty awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing more. Signed up for their newsletter, hopefully this isn't too kiddie-centric. Although for those parents out there I'm sure a kid safe MMO would be welcome.

You can see a bit of gameplay in these videos on GameTrailers, with Scott Brown (president of NetDevil) demoing the game: Walkthrough Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Part 6

I find it interesting that it takes a kids game with legos for an MMO developer to come up with new ideas. I know this is being made for kids, but I want to play!

Well, other than the kids game aspect, why? I see this as them trying to get around the grind & develop something that is actually innovative. The innovation is really what has me the most excited about it because, realistically this being a kids game may kill it for adults.

Yeah, you got a good point there. I guess because they're less concerned about building a conventional MMO and more concerned about building a solid game that will interest kids.

That's one awesome trailer! Loved how it played on peoples expectations and totally succeded with me.
I'll be watching this with interest, since while I like me my XP and levels, if they can do something good without it, thats pretty positive. We've had the same boring stuff to do in MMO's practically since EQ1 and before...Its time to move on!

There's a joke to be made about Netdevil, Cryptic and Toyota partnering on a car-building-focused MMO...

I *almost* deleted the email then I realized its not spam.
I am getting this sense of dread that I will not find the same creative potential that I found in legos when I was a kid or even the creative potential I have seen more recently in Minecraft.
