halo 2 online bots?

Since I got my xbox, a friend of mine is pushing me to get halo2 to play with him.  My research is telling me that there is no way to play co-op together against bots in an online game but it is possible if you are sitting on the same box.    In other words, the online game with him will turn into a frag-fest on yours truly.

Is this a true analysis from all you gurus?

The single player game is coop ONLY over split screen, not over live! And there are NOT bots. I hope that helps.
