For me it is the next great thing.  It's set the bar to a new level.  I will never again pay a monthly fee for an MMO (but it seems like everything is moving to free to play anyhow).  I will never again accept an MMO that doesn't encourage collaboration and cooperation amongst strangers as strongly as GW2 does.  I'm done with steep levelling curves, I'm done with holy trinity grouping requirements, I'm done with needing 40 people to block off 3 hours in order to see a cool giant boss battle.

There's still room for improvement, of course, but GW2 is the new baseline for what I can demand to see in an MMO.

so in case you guys haven't heard. nov is kicking off with a content patch.

some stuff confirmed:
a new harder dungeon compared to what's in the game
events leading up the main patch. possibly beginning as early as thur/friday
new spvp game types
new events

speculation is an entire new island to explore.

So there's a content patch? No wonder I just logged on and tried to play and there's a whole load of files to download. I just wanted to logged on quickly and play for an hour. Ugh!

There a big "Lost Shores" weekend event that kicks off this Friday.  Looking forward to it!

This is also a free trial weekend.  I (supposedly) have three guest keys that I'm happy to send out to anyone who wants one.  Will need to figure out where they are though...

Apparently all the new quest lines for this "one time event" are completely bugged.  None of the NPC's who allow you to continue the quest are spawning, so there are a truckload of people just standing around until they fix it.

The new dungeon apparently works though...might have to give that a run later tonight.

EDIT:  Gave the dungeon a go with a two different random PUGs last night.  They were a glaring reminder of why I dislike gaming with other people.

this is one of those games i passed on at launch (xcom was fast approaching and im a "one game guy" slywink) but have considered lately.  the only thing ive heard to change my mind is that the world is starting to feel a bit... empty... true or not?  keep in mind im someone who thinks that an MMO better be "MM" - is it going to be a problem if i jump into the party late?

So I finally get to the final mission on my personal story quest this afternoon.  A quest that I have played through solo for the last 110 hours and 80+ levels.  So what do they do?  Make the final dungeon the only time in the entire game where you are required to group.  Even better, I haven't been able to find anyone to do it (the only PUG's I've found wanted to charge me 30+ silver to join).

Yes, I know I'm playing an MMO, but the reason I've enjoyed it so much is because I haven't had to "officially" join up with anyone throughout this process.  It has been completely, 100% soloable...right up until the very last mission.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes  Changing it all up at the very end is puppies.

It's emptier than it was before, but there's always people bringing up alts, so I would go ahead and dive in. Plus, the nature of group events helps draw people together even if the zone is somewhat sparse. And the culture of the gamers in the game seems very friendly and collaborative. You can ask zone chat for help on just about anything an people usually help out.

Cool, I'd love to get through it if we can get a group together.  I've never grouped in GW2, so I honestly have no idea how that all works.  Good news is, I'm off tomorrow afternoon through Sunday, so I should have plenty of time to give it a shot.   thumbsup

Well unfortunately, short-term timing is not the best because my folks are headed in for Thanksgiving. Maybe Sunday afternoon/evening? We'll need a fifth.

Grouping is easy, although I'm assuming we're not all on the same server. We'll have to do some server hopping, but from what I understand that is easy.

I've been playing this for the last few weeks and agree with the earlier comment that the world is feeling empty.  For the first 10 levels or so, there were lots of players around to team on events.  I'm up to level 26 now and sometimes I can't find anyone to join me for an event and I end up getting mobbed even though I am 2-3 levels above the recommended level.

This was a problem I know I mentioned in Beta test but of course was ignored.   The PvE is so much fun when there are others around; even a single other person makes a world of difference, but as soon as it's empty, it can be a complete chore to accomplish anything.  What they need is a reason for people to come back to lower level areas, and to make the whole "dynamic PvE" more meaningful.  There should be server wide rewards or some other motivation to keeping lower levels intact, and the enemy content should be constantly encroaching.  As much as I love the game, I get frustrated by knowing what it has/had the potential to be.

My advice if you are stuck solo is to go to a completely different lower level area and just do those quests and exploration, or supplement with a bit of crafting.  I've done full levels just wandering around in areas far below my level, and it's still fun.  The xp is smaller but comes much faster the more you outlevel the content.

Server is still plenty full, so don't feel like you're going to be a lone.  I've found lots of nice people to group with.

Doubt anybody here still plays, but ArenaNet made the core game free to download and play (w/ limitations), in prep for its Heart of Thorns expansion. So I'm finally giving it a whirl.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/play-for-free-today/
Quote
Here are the changes we made for free accounts.

First, free accounts start with fewer character slots and bag slots than the paid version of the game. But they still get the full complement of slots as soon as they buy Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns.

Second, free accounts have some chat restrictions and economy restrictions so that they canít be used to disrupt the game for other players. Free accounts can use local chat and whispers, but not map chat. With whispers, they can both start new conversations and reply to existing conversations but are limited to starting new conversations no more than once every 30 seconds. Free accounts can buy and sell common goods on the trading post. They canít mail gold or items directly to other players, trade gold for gems, or access guild vaults.

Third, free accounts have some restrictions to prevent them from skipping ahead to places where they could be used to disrupt the game. They must play to level 10 before leaving the starter zones, to level 30 before using LFG, and to level 60 before using World vs. World. They can play PvP immediately but must get to rank 20 before using custom and unranked arenas.

Weíve found in testing that itís hard to read a list like this and know how itís going to feel in action. All these changes are live today, so we invite you to see for yourself. Test with a free account and see that itís the same Guild Wars 2 you know and love; test with a veteran account and confirm that the community is protected.

I've tried to get back into GW2 a couple times, but something in the way they have designed it causes my PC to overheat and shut down after I play for anywhere from 60-90 minutes.  It's the only gam I've ever had this issue with, and apparently it's a known issue with certain components that they've simply ignored.

Bummed, as I'd really like to jump back in with the expansion.

Sorry, man.  icon_frown Wondering if maybe it's some sort of specific video setting option that overheats your GPU?

Part of the reason I finally got that Asus gaming PC I babbled about in the hardware forum is I just couldn't deal with my old HP PC constantly locking up or shutting down in intensive games anymore.

I put in about 4-5 hours on a Warrior in the game -- you know me, can't pass up a class that can do a shield-charge  icon_smile Had a lot of fun. I feel like the 10-hotkey system (with a lot of variance depending on weapon choices, including shield) is right for me as the whole spectacle of 40-60 hotkeys and 5-8 hotkey trays on screen with many mmorpgs I've played is something I found made it really difficult to get back into the game if I went away for a while.

It also so far seems like loot drops at a modest level - which I like - rather than at a pace where I feel like I need to rush back to my stash every 5 minutes (per say, Marvel Heroes, where my inventory seems to flood every 5 minutes). Perhaps it's different later.

The expansion sounds great if extremely endgame-focused, so I'm not sure yet whether I'll be playing enough to get to the endgame. Certainly enjoyed what I played so far. As a "care bear" type, a small thing I enjoy is getting a little XP for rezzing fallen players and NPCs. Got at least one thanks from a rezzed player.

fwiw, I'm playing on the server that has "Madness" in the title.  icon_smile I think Free player accounts (i.e., someone who hasn't purchased the core game) are whisper-limited in some way.

One of the things I like about Guild Wars is that they didn't put in content you could get locked out of due to not having enough online friends to group up with. Oh well.

Reminds me, seems like fair number of veteran players upset about bundling GW2 "core" with the expansion. i.e., making veteran players essentially pay more - at least to some extent; GW2 probalby doesn't go for $50-$60 anymore - for something they already have. Whereas new players like me (I went ahead and bought the expansion/core bundle this morning) are happy with the bundle. But I would've thought they'd offer at least even modest discount for existing players that bought GW2 "core" at some point.

Or, you know, even just give those veteran players that buy the expansion/core bundle some exclusive in-game goodies, or a bunch of gems, etc., something that a newb like me wouldn't get. Perhaps that's still possible?

Zillion threads on it, here's one where community rep responded a bit:

Anyway, I got recruited into a reasonably friendly, casual-player type guild on that Madness server, and figured I'd like to try some other classes there. Free play was totally fine, but is limited to only two characters per server.

Didn't the final main story quest require a group?  I remember being extremely frustrated because I didn't have to group with anyone the entire time, and suddenly had to group up for the last mission...maybe they've changed that now.

Still heavily addicted to this, and having great fun with the four Professions I've played so far (Warrior, Ranger, Guardian, Engineer).

I finally decided to focus more on the Warrior to see if I can start pushing towards the L80 cap and maybe have one there by the time the expansion launches.

If I'm understanding HoT correctly, the content is strictly end cap (L80) focused. So imho it's no more likely to break up the playerbase than the end-cap expansions for stuff like LOTRO or SWTOR. As much as I initially loved SWTOR (and I revisited it a couple of times for periods), I never did get a character to the cap -- I got bogged down in the area around the L40s and lost interest -- so I never did spring for the expansion that focused on end-level content.

In GW2's case, I didn't really have a choice as ArenaNet no longer offers just "core" GW2 for purchase.

Overall, I just love GW2 because it feels like -- while it has its own flavor -- it's doing a bunch of features that I liked in various mmorpgs I've played in maybe the last 10-12 years, but had never found all in one game. And that's even including some things I liked in long dead stuff like Tabula Rasa (I loved the base defense, and then trying to take back fallen bases there), or just general possession of locations on a map (reminds me of Planetside).

I enjoy that the gameplay in some ways follows mmorpg conventions but the combat feels more like an ARPG to me in a good way.

I'm finding in the mid 20s content that blocking/dodging becomes more important. I'm trying to improve at the timing because my sheer bludgeoning style to that point isn't always effective then.

Figuring out the Traits and Build is initially confusing to me but ultimately fun, and I look forward to getting to L45 to have a more diverse Build set up.  icon_smile

One of the things I like about Guild Wars is that they didn't put in content you could get locked out of due to not having enough online friends to group up with. Oh well.

Didn't the final main story quest require a group?  I remember being extremely frustrated because I didn't have to group with anyone the entire time, and suddenly had to group up for the last mission...maybe they've changed that now.

Well, I meant like 5 people was at least a reasonable amount of people to find for an occasional dungeon.

As it turns out, though, I'm told they nerfed Arah so you can solo it now.

Can you guys clue me in on the dungeons? Wasn't clear yet where you gain access to them. I think the first one's meant for L30 players or thereabouts, so my Warrior is closing in on that.

I read some wiki stuff online about it, just they didn't explain where to go, how to gain access etc.

The big Mordrem Invasion started last night:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-mordrem-guard/

Reminds me of some Rikti Invastion events in City of Heroes. Or the frequent Invasions in Rift.

While it can be exciting in a way, I just find that the base game is more tactical and fun for me. Fighting alongside a few players in a regular group event I find exciting and fun. Frantically chasing after a group of seemingly hundreds of people, I can barely even get a whack in much less feel like I'm contributing anything. It does at least remind you that it truly is a Massive game, since the event seemed to lure back a bunch of people who said they hadn't played in ages.

The reward blooms can be turned in at special vendors for rewards you choose. One is a chest with a random item but of course mine wasn't usable by my class.  icon_razz

Some screenies from last night:

Really no challenge with this number of players Zerg Rushing everything in sight. Some folks including me got pancaked but usually you'd be rezzed up right away.

I dutifully participated until the invasions went off to Tyria and then went back to base game stuff.

OK, while I love bows, wanted to try a warhorn/melee set up on the Ranger tonight.

A Warhorn skill that calls in four hawks that try to peck your enemy's face off? Too cool!  icon_cool

Something either with a driver update, a game patch, or my Windows 10 upgrade has made GW2 playable again.  Yay!

I've run a Sylvari thief up to 17 over the last few days.  I had forgotten how much fun this game is, although I'm still not entirely sold on the Thief class...feels too squishy.  Will give it at least to 25 before deciding whether to keep going to switch over to something else.
