Animal Crossing FAQ:
How do I get my friend code?
Head north to the town gate and go inside.  Talk to Copper, and he will give you the option of connecting to Nintendo WiFi to get your code.  He's also the dude you talk to in order to visit other towns.

After generating your friends code, you can see it at any time by going to the inventory screen, selecting the friends tab, and clicking on the key icon.

How do I add a friend?
To add a friend, you need their friends code, character name, and town name.  Go to your Inventory, click on the Friends tab, and you should see a 'Register' button on the bottom right.

What do the red triangles/green circles by people's names mean/I added someone, how come he's never online?
*Both* people need to have each other's friends code registered in order to see people online.  When you connect to WiFi, I believe the green triangle represents codes that have been verified and they have you on their friends list (can somebody confirm the last part?)

How do I connect to WiFi/How do I tell if a friend is online/How do I let somebody visit my town?
Head north to the town gate and go inside.  Talk to Copper, and he will give you the choice to 'Invite Guests' - either from another DS or from Nintendo WiFi.  If you choose the WiFi, the town gates will open and people will be allowed to enter your town.  This will also log you into the WiFi network - you should see a green icon on the bottom left.  The icon will be blue if any friends are also online, or you should be able to go to the Friends tab in your inventory to see how is all playing. 

If any of your friends is currently playing and connected to WiFi, I think Copper will mention it to you before opening your gates as a heads up.

Also, whenever somebody enters your town once the gates are open the host will get a little cutscene announcing their arrival - so you don't have to worry about me sneaking into your town and impregnating all of its residents without your knowledge.

How do I visit somebody's town?
Again, go to the town gate and talk to Copper.  He will give you the option to visit another town.  Pick the town, and away you go!

What happens if my connection drops while I'm visting/being visited by someone?  Will I lose everything
Your game is saved whenever you connect to the WiFi network.  So anything you've done/collected/etc. after you've either gone to somebody else's town or opened your town gates will disappear.  It's a good idea to get done all of the chores you want to do before going online, but there's no reason to quit + save, then restart - simply talk to Copper and connect to WiFi and your current progress will be saved.

How does the mysterious cat/letters in the bottle work?
I haven't seen it yet, but I believe the cat will randomly wander into towns when you are connected to WiFi, and you are allowed to redesign what his face looks like.
Edit: as I was typing this, the cat showed up in my town!  Basically it's an f-d up looking cat that announces who designed his face and what the design is called.  You are then able to change it to your own design.

Letters in a bottle are simply letters you write, then you can dump it into either the river or the ocean.  When you connect to WiFi, a random person will eventually get your letter on the beach.  I've been telling folks to visit our humble forums via this - lemme know if that's how you got here

My connection seems to drop after playing for a couple of minutes.  Any suggestions.
On your wireless access point/router, try changing the default speed to be 1-2Mbps (which is the max the DS can support).  If you have an 802.11g router/AP, you might try changing the wireless mode to be B-only.

Additionally if you are having problems with your signal strength, I've heard rumors of hacked drivers that are out there that let you increase the output power to almost double the default.  Since I cannot endorse breaking FCC rules, I can't post a direct link to anything.  Google is your friend

I have 2 different WAPs in my house, and for some reason the DS only works with one of them so if I'm on the wrong side of the house I drop... oh well, guess I'd just better not move around too much.  Now if I could just get it working with the hotspots at my work...

The router that doesn't work may be one that isn't compatible. Nintendowifi.com has a list on their site of routers that do and don't work. I had one that didn't work and then bought another one and didn't read the fine print and found out it didn't work either, so I ended up buying another one - UGH! At least the third one worked!

About the red triangle/green circle thing, I added everyone and logged onto wi-fi tonight and after seeing nobody had their gate open, I got off wi-fi.  So now, when I look on my friend's list, the only green circle I got is Torfish.  And I don't know, it would seem to me that I'd be on more friends lists than that.  Maybe that's not what the circle/triangles mean?

I checked before and after a Wi-Fi connection.  I have everyone here on my friend's list and about half of them had red triangles before the connection (you were one of them, TML).  After I disconnected, only three were left with the triangle.  You now had a circle.  My guess would be that it's related to the friends list, but who knows?  I wonder if Nintendo will let us know what it really means.

Well, you're one of the ones I added after posting, and I connected afterward to see if anyone's town was open; no one was online at the time.

I didn't check for circles/triangles, though.  I'll check that after work today.
