Talk about shocking news...

Gods & Heroes Returns from the Dead
http://www.massively.com/2010/02/22/gods-and-heroes-returns-from-the-dead/#continued
Quote
Heatwave Interactive has announced today that it has acquired the intellectual property rights and all assets for Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising to further production and pick up where Perpetual left off. We were able to sit down for a brief interview with Heatwave co-founder and CEO, Anthony Castoro, on this acquisition news.

Quote
Massively multiplayer online games are probably the hardest things you can make in the video games business, so I don't think there are a lot of people who could do what we're doing. So, it's not easy, but we have a lot of really great talent here. We have folks from Sony Online, from Origin and EA, from NCsoft, and none of these guys are doing this for the first time. For most of them, this is their third or fourth MMO. We're set up to make sure we can tackle a big project like this. We have all of the assets and we have every bug that was ever entered into the bug database. It's a daunting task, but we've hired a few folks in and they're working really hard right now. It's already running in the office, so we can play it right now. It's a lot of fun.
While I liked the concept, I didn't much enjoy the execution during my brief beta experience back in '07.

I kind of liked it, but more as a WoW alternative with Greek Mythology rather than anything new or interesting.

Same - I found it very interesting, and it time, it could have been great..they were pretty far ahead in the game...not far from how some MMO's are released, anyways

One always is concerned when something has been in development for so long. At some point, there's a need to freshen up the graphics and such which would be a huge task, presumably. Also, why couldn't they be in Seattle, so I could go park on their doorstep until they let me help?

Ten Ton interview (vague, and they promise the world, but it's something):
A Q&A with Gods & Heroes Producer Tim Schubert
http://www.tentonhammer.com/nod/81345
Quote
Ten Ton Hammer: Some might consider three and a half years a lifetime in terms of how game graphics have evolved. Do you feel that Gods and Heroes graphics compare favorably with MMORPGs that have just entered the market?

Tim: Cutting edge graphics are something of a double edged sword.  On one hand they look great on magazine covers and high end machines, on the other hand, they can limit your potential audience.  The amazing thing is that even though the Gods & Heroes engine is a little old, the game still looks great. The game was winning awards for its quality aesthetics back in the day and the quality of that craftsmanship hasn’t faded much over time.  After we modernize the game engine a bit and unleash our art staff on it it’ll look even better and will rival its competitors.
I seem to recall Perpetual laying off just about the entire art department before the game even reached closed beta. Perhaps some of those people are still job hunting.

It was canceled in October 2007. Back then I was still recuperating from Titan Quest Tendinitis. WHERE does the time go?  icon_razz

I was in the beta. Had fun with it. Was different in setting at least. I did not see anything special in it though. But I'd like back into a beta of it.

According to Heatwave Interactive's Facebook site for Gods & Heroes "stress test invites" did in fact just go out to a few people:
http://www.facebook.com/godsheroesromerising
Quote
Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising Thursday Night's "Stress Test Invite" email has some issues which we are aware of. It should be resolved by Friday morning at the latest.

Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising Readying a Gods & Heroes stress test for Saturday August 28 from 2:00-3:00pm CST.

You can also signup for updates at Heatwave's site:
http://www.godsandheroes.com/

MMO Gamer did a more recent interview in April (April 9, 2010):
http://www.mmogamer.com/04/09/2010/heatwave-interactive-gods-and-heroes
Quote
Anthony Castoro: I think the Minion System is here to stay, and if anything it should be blown out a little bit more. Since that idea came out there have been other games like Grado Espada, and to some degree Star Trek Online had minions, but I agree, in addition to the setting the Minion System was one of the biggest unique things.

That and some of the things they were doing with the combat. They hadn’t quite finished figuring out what was going to happen with combat, but the finishing moves and the tandem combat action was pretty cool.

We’re definitely focused on the Minion System, ideally making it more important and more fun. I think they have the basics there, and that will be a good place to iterate.

There are other things we’re going to do that will change it a little bit. Heatwave has a mass-market appeal take, so some things we’ll do with the IP, if you go to the website you can even see, the one little piece of art we’ve got there is in a different style, a little more dramatic, a little less clean.

There are some small things, overall, the look and feel of the game is still good, pretty competitive, but the characters themselves I think need some work, so we’ll probably do some work on the models and the customization available there just to make sure it stands up for a couple of years after its intended release.

btw, that Ten Ton Hammer Q&A I posted in February changed links at some time, here's the fixed link:

The stress test supposedly brought in "hundreds" of players (gotta start somewhere, right?) before some data center hosting facility issues cropped up. If nothing else, it seems to confirm the game is in fact alive and breathing in some state.  icon_smile

I missed the stresser by 1 hour and haven't been able to get on  at all. It says servers open at 8am but Im guessing thats an old message from the old beta. I'd still like to give this another go. I'd like to start all ove with a new character.

Well it seems to be worse than when it originally closed shop. Don't know why that would be. But it is missing a lot of sound and it just seems worse off.

TTH has a "state of the game" interview:
http://www.tentonhammer.com/gnh/interviews/heatwave-interview-sep-2010
Quote
Ten Ton Hammer: Let’s talk a bit about gameplay. Are you sticking true to what it formerly was or have you added your own spices to it?

Heatwave: The things that are central to the IP, such as true historical context with Roman mythology adventure, the minion system, choosing your gods, all of that are core to the IP. There are some things that we’re changing and there are some things that just weren’t done yet.

Those things that were not complete will take on Heatwave’s flavor. One such example is combat and how minions work in combat. We love that idea and everyone loves that idea, but the execution on it wasn’t finished. We have our own ideas on what will make that really fun and we’ve looked through the history that it has been through, and some of us were in the beta test.

The community manager for that project is now a designer at Heatwave, although he’s not working on Gods and Heroes. We have a lot of context for what they tried and what they went through. Ultimately, I think that what you’re going to see with the minion system will be Heatwave’s play on how that system should work and what’s going to make it fun.
*One amusing thing he noted was some stress test players claimed the game "looked better than it did three years ago," even though Heatwave has done no graphical improvements yet (it's rolling them out a bit later).

Quote
Ten Ton Hammer: Have you decided on a revenue model yet?

Heatwave: The answer to that is yes. We’ve discussed it with the current audience of people that we have in the game. The way the game was built and true to the current model, we’re focusing on bringing the game out as a traditional pay-to-play game. Down the road, depending upon what the players like and what their preferences are, we could adapt the game to a different model.

Going to a free-to-play model with a game that was designed for a subscription is a pretty significant undertaking. The game is so far along and there are so many people interested in it, that the monthly subscription isn’t going to matter to that core audience.

Box art:

Though Lord knows, they have a long way before they get there, this suggests Heatwave at least plans a retail release at some point. I wonder if the poor folks who got stuck with those pre-order boxes years ago get anything now.

Dev Q&A Update: UI Changes
Highlights include (some of this is stuff MMOers take for granted but simply wasn't in G&H to this point):
-UI scaling via a simple slider
-Quest Tracker
-Item Comparison popups
-Level notification with a quick summary of character improvements and available Feats
Quote
Q: Are there further UI changes planned before or after launch?

A: We have several things in the works – the big one is a feature that will put quest locations on your world map. [What a concept!  icon_eek] Also in the works are a new fast travel system for getting around the world.

Other planned updates that are interface centric include making more of the hotbar buttons keymappable, improved minion controls, item and quest linking, better quest status info in the journal, chat interface updates and fixes, and a better player stats display … to name a few. These will be coming online as we can get them in the game – hopefully most of these updates will be in before launch, but some will certainly follow after.
This all makes one realize what a true mess G&H was. I wonder if the new devs ever ask themselves, "Why didn't we just start from scratch instead of trying to fix a game that was missing so many basic, expected features?"  confused

From the latest e-mailed update April 29 -- they now have an official release date: June 21, 2011

Gods & Heroes State of the Republic II
Quote
In the original State of the Republic, we laid out a list of what we wanted to accomplish (nod to Pseudonym for doing his own). So here’s a list of all of those items and their status. I’ll be upfront, we aren’t going to be able to do all of it, but we are going to accomplish the vast majority of it. Where we don’t accomplish the stated goal, I’ll try to be very clear about why.

Playability
*Make combat more fun (animations, timing, systems interaction)
This work is on-going and will continue up-to and through launch. We’ve made two broad changes to combat so far.
Now our art team is actively revising the combat animations and working with the programmers to improve the overall look and feel (the death animation bug is fixed for example). At the same time our Systems Game Designer is tweaking and improving all the class abilities including timing and interactions, while also adjusting where you get the abilities in the level curve to make the game more fun, sooner.
*Make minions more interesting.
Likewise, behind the scenes there’s work going on to improve the minion AI, much of which dovetails in with the combat changes.
*Improve the UI (scale and functionality)
        The UI now scales
New Map Art is in QA
        Quest Tracker has been added
Quest Guide UI is in QA testing
Level-up notification UI has been added
Item comparison UI has been added
*Overhaul the new player experience (content, storytelling)
We’ve tightened the storyline and made it more prominent.
Always do the beginning at the end. Much of this work is slated for May.
    *Improve the fast travel system
Should be in QA next week
    *General bug fixing/polish
Most of the team will be focused on bug fixing from now until mid-June.

Content
    30 complete levels
        Done.
More “mature” content (blood & gore, context appropriate storytelling, context appropriate nudity & sensuality)
While we did add some mature content, after a deep conversation based on the feedback from the community, input from our territory distributors we decided not to go for a full “M” rating. This is a very recent decision that I now regret not having separately with all of you.

Ultimately, the team came to me and said they didn’t believe they could do an “M” rating justice in the time remaining, and they didn’t want to put in boobs and bad language (i.e., Age-of-Conan-it smirk -- though they forgot to mention flying limbs and heads...) just for the hype. I couldn’t argue with that. We’ll continue to go edgier on the combat and storyline.

Questing (revised quest content, quest integration with the world map, a heads up quest tracker)
As mentioned in the UI above, all of this is either available in the BETA or almost ready to deploy.
   German Language game client
The game is actively being translated and the code is being localized. This will be done.

Game Features
*Estate Game (Expanding the “Camp” concept)
The Ancestral Estate is in QA testing and will deployed to the Beta next week. There’s a lot more work to do, but we are looking forward to your feedback.
*Crafting system (Loot economy, item creation)
Honestly, this is the one feature that may not make it for launch. At some point, we have to stop the engineer working on it and have him work on polish and bugs and it’s going to be very close. The crafting system WILL go into the game, but it may not be done to the quality we require for ship. Just being straight with you.
   * Auction House
Slated for QA testing next week. It’ll go in.

Community Features:
    New website
We’ve been continually updating the site, our biggest deployment for this will be open Beta
    New forums
Should be turned on no later than next week.
    New social integration
We’re working with a third party to implement a pretty substantial social feature set

Publishing/Marketing Features:
New Key Character (actor soon to be announced)
We’ve hinted at him. The actor is Dominic Purcell and he will be portraying Atellus (the guy holding the minotaur head)
Planning for a retail box full of goodies as well as digital distribution.
That’s why we’re talking! Details on the distribution agreements forthcoming.
    Near-simultaneous European Launch
Indeed, including servers hosted in Europe.

That was the entire original list. The biggest issue is crafting and the team desperately wants to put it in, but we have to be disciplined about quality and everyone has a budget to operate within. In addition, there’s a ton of other work the team has done that you don’t see in support of running the commercial service, setting up customer service, the NOC, the billing platform, etc. For example, the server team has double the server capacity in the last two months.

Next week, I’ll update you on our post launch plans, which remain consistent with what we said in the State of the Republic, but we’ll have more details. Also, you’ll be seeing more information soon about purchase options at retail and online, as well as pricing.

Wierd - I tried this while SOE is stealing my money, and...it's very bad. The intro quest island is EXACTLY the same way it was what..5 years ago? Graphics arent anything special, and all in all, it hasn't aged well. It may have been good 5 years ago, but now? Most F2p games are better than this.

Its a shame really, the time period is pretty interesting and being a legionarie could be awesome, also the whole squad thing could be fun.

I really don't understand why they want to release a game full of bugs, missing features (like crafting) and generally just not very good in about a month? I mean, they are 30 people working on it now.. I'd hate to see them all loose their jobs, but if they release in this state, they will.

Its really sad, you know...

My gut impression is it's not a big studio, doesn't have a fortune to spend fixing G&H, and for better or worse, they probably feel they've got to get this out the door and start pulling in some revenue if they want to continue development (as sheer folly as that sounds). Which in some ways is roughly the story of about 90% of MMOs that ever get launched I guess.

I still think the concept is like taking some failed car-maker's uncompleted car, glomming on a bunch of new parts to it and planning to sell it to car buyers while assembly technicians are still clambering over each car trying to bolt things in place. It's interesting but sure as heck doesn't sound like a recipe for success.  paranoid

Does make me wonder if Mythic's Imperator was far enough along (maybe it never got past concept art) to get a similar release (however half-arsed) down the road some day. Or maybe how Star Trek Online might've turned out if Cryptic chose to give Perpetual's STO-take this kind of "renovation" treatment instead of using the Champions engine. And it'll be interesting to see how that Korean dev does with its "renovations" of Hellgate: London and Mythos.
