UBISOFT® ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON ONLINE®

New Free-to-Play Game Brings Best Qualities of Ghost Recon Franchise Online
SAN FRANCISCO – May 24, 2011 – Today, Ubisoft announced the development of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online, a new multi-player, third-person, cover-based tactical shooter that will be offered free-to-play online. Ghost Recon Online is developed by Ubisoft Singapore, and offers all the best qualities of the Ghost Recon franchise in a downloadable, dynamic, PC-based online game. Ghost Recon Online launches in closed beta beginning this summer.

With Ghost Recon Online, Ubisoft is delivering the most social, connected and customizable Ghost Recon experience yet. The game offers players the ability to choose between three different classes of Ghost, customize their weapons, deploy cutting-edge military technology, and share intel with their team. Ghost Recon Online also features a rich lobby platform for hosting social and persistent progression features. Ubisoft also will back the game with a full set of services, including regular events and game content updates, customized content based on community feedback, and live support.

The online features complement Ghost Recon Online’s rich graphical environments and maps, which rival the quality of those traditionally seen only in retail games. And while the game is free for anyone to play, players also can purchase premium items and fully personalize their experience.

“Ghost Recon Online takes the best attributes of the Ghost Recon game franchise and brings them online, making the experience of being a Ghost accessible to millions of new players and fans,” said Hugues Ricour, senior producer at Ubisoft. “This game was designed from the start to be a free-to-play experience. Our development teams are dedicated to making Ghost Recon Online a truly unique, top-quality online title.”

Ghost Recon Online is Ubisoft’s latest entrant in the online gaming market and its first shooter to be offered in a free-to-play format. "For Ubisoft, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" [Edited for your protection from corporate babble-bj]

Players can sign up for the closed beta and find more information on the game at www.GhostReconOnline.com.
Wasn't there some crazy era when Ghost Recon games were actually developed in the U.S.? Ah, nostalgia...

I'm guessing premium items are stuff like "guns" and "bullets."  icon_razz Instead of making fun, I should gasp that this is a PC-specific title.  icon_eek

Apparently no co-op despite the original Ghost Recon having like, you know, excellent co-op? Oh well...

I tried this out today after watching "WTF is..." review of Ghost Recon Online and I must say I like it! It's very close to battlefield series but it's 3rd person and a bit slower pace since you really need to take advantage of the covers. I can see myself trying this out for a while.

Watch the "WTF is..." clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOPuSe6ejZ4

I'd say this game is worth a try if you like shooters.

Takes a bit longer to find a match when you choose the beginner only games (which you definitely should when starting out)

I'm Harkonis in game, add me. smile

We currently have:

Teggy
Mikagami
Kato2049
Cortiliann

played my first match, game feels pretty familiar.  It's decent enough and the matches quick enough that I can see it being a fun time waster until the fall games start hitting.

This game is surprisingly good, even great maybe? GRO seems to have a LOT of depth and customizable options for all your gear and skills to match a certain playstyle.

Seems decent, not sure how much I'm going to get to it with my Steam backlog being what it is from the summer sale and what not.
I'm on it as Rougan, just played a single match.

keep in mind that the levelling system is changing/going away sometime 'soon'.  Anyone who hits 30 with a class prior to that is grandfathered in and will have everything unlocked to be available to get.  If you don't, it looks on paper as if the grind is going to be a bit longer.  Hard to explain quickly, but they want to make people gradually work their way up from weapon to weapon instead of just saving up and using the starter gun then hitting 30 and going straight to the 'best' gun.

So get all three classes to 30 ASAP if you can.   Typical time to do so is somewhere between 30-50 hours per class times 3 classes.  Plenty of play time.  (not like it's a complete grind, since the game is fun and if you don't like playing, why grind anyway?)

Remember when you played a game just to play it and there weren't unlocks?  sigh

They just posted this:

'In order to let everyone be aware of the amount of time they have to level up, get weapons, etc. under the current system, we wanted to let you know that the patch is currently scheduled for a tentative release of August 21st.

This date is subject to change, but a delay shouldn't be more than a week at most.

Have fun shooting people in the face! '

I'm using a 50% xp boost, so no problem getting there smile

maybe I'll try and get one class to 30, don't think I'm going to be committed to the game enough to do all 3 classes like that.

I'm currently working on my Recon to get him to 30, he's at 20 now. Was only using MP5SD and Sentinel sniper rifle before but now with the P90 WAR, the going gets easier. So looks like I have almost 20 days to get the last 10 levels.

I'm Tokek in game, though I doubt we'll run into each other since they separate the queues for US and non-US IP addresses.

So I'm running around with my recon at low levels, consistently getting best recon round after round, and I'm pretty sure this came down to two things.  One, I understand objectives, crazy how many people don't.  Two, I'm using Oracle and not Cloak.  Every other recon in game is using Cloak it seems, and I'm not surprised, I could have predicted that, but Oracle is awesome.  Situational awareness for you and your team, that's hard to beat.

I have both clients installed but I play on the NA one and they do separate the US/Canada IP addresses from the non-US IP addresses. The only way I can play with US folks is if I use VPN.

odd Tok, didn't think that was the case.

Forge, you are correct on all accounts.  You probably weren't sniping either.  TONS of people just have some crazy fear of actually being on the proper point.  TONS of people (newer players even moreso) play recon and insist on sniping (thus ignoring the point) and insist on using cloak (cause it's cool!).  This gives you games where you are the only person on point.

It does get better once you get matched higher up, but you'll still get those types of games every now and then.  FWIW, other than oracle and the very last smg recon feels quite a bit underpowered compared to the other 2 classes.  I still prefer it due to Oracle though and feel naked without it.

Had another game with 5 recon cloaking snipers earlier this morning and it is so frustrating.  Eventually one changed to Oracle after I bitched, but he stayed so far back that IF he ever scanned, it never showed anyone.

I'm in Mumble most of the time and on Raptr.  Also in game as Harkonis.  Sadly Raptr doesn't have GRO on it so no 'now playing'

I play aggressive with my Assault class and it usually pays off by doing a bold flank. Bounding cover shooting is what everybody seems to be doing, and the normal guy usually freaks out when I charge their position.

Posted then went and played one, had the 5 recons with cloak again.  Not sure why but it had 3 total noobs on the other team though, so we won anyway.

In most games I've played, a cloaked recon is only good for flanking and holding the enemy near their spawn point and away from cap. However, most newbies will use cloak to snipe thinking that it renders then invisible so they'll have more time to aim. While that's true against newbie snipers, veteran snipers will see the shimmer of the cloak and shoot them dead anyway.

Hark, there was a post on the forum about the IP address pool separation and they did that so the red pingers won't get too much of lag advantage against green pingers.

Edit: found the news bit.

On the one hand: More friends in a match is good.

On the other hand: More chances of 8 man groups of clans jumping up and down upon various tender bits.

was finally able to get another beginner game in and get another level.  at this rate I'll be out of that section come 2014 smile

so, what ability makes you bulletproof?  there was an opposing team member who was walking into combat, taking tons of shots (and having a score pretty close to what Hark has above) yet didn't go down; is that one of the perks/abilities or did I encounter someone hacking?

That skill was most likely Aegis from the specialist class. It's a bubble that diverts bullets away.  Can be countered by putting enough bullets on it, blackout skill, grenades, or getting inside the bubble for a point blank shot.

Most devices are game changers and using them and countering them is a large part of the game.  Aegis can also be countered with corners, often when an aegis user comes around cover, you can pop inside the shield and get the kill.

Every skill has a counter and Kato listed most of the aegis ones.

Coordinated device pushes are crucial (and lacking in pugs) to victory
