Need to share this neat trick with xfire

One of my problems is I tend to not wear a watch when I am playing - at the same time I don't like to loose track of time. Unfortunately most games don't seem to have a time option frown

However

See picture below - Check out along the top - now games which support xfires ingame messaging will show the clock. To enable

Whilst in game (with xfire running!), Scroll lock x to pull in chat interface, click options to enable clock (fps is also available), with the clock up click the pin symbol next to it. Now scroll lock x. All the other windows go leaving the clock. Xfire remembers so will always pull the clock in when you start playing

I think the xfire clan needs a little nudge smile

It's still around - xfire continues to add in options, screenshots auto upload to your own profile page and they now have videos doing the same smile

Demo of me crashing in Grid.

It's been a while since I posted about xfire but they keep adding and improving to it smile

At some point they added support for MSN. SO in xfire you can now have your msn contacts as well - no longer need to run both contact programs any more. Even better if an msn contact messages you you can chat back to him in game and of course it lets your msn buddies know what game you are playing by changing your name when in game - all very nice.

They also added twitter - this one I was more sceptical about - however a beta I am in uses twitter to indicate when servers are going up and down - xfire then relays that information. It wouldn't work for lots of feeds but one or two and it's perfect and of course that messages you in game as well.

That and the previous improvements make it the best home messenger imho

I've started using Xfire again, mostly as a support chat program for Vassal while I boardgame with friends and family. Once again I've been pleasantly surprised at how good it is. The voice chat in particular is crystal clear - even the case when using it with an ancient laptop with a craptastic Realtec sound chip. I've also noted it requires far less CPU resources, which is a God send for my wimpy laptop since most of it's resources are required to just run Vassal with one of the larger boardgame modules. My son really likes it because now with the MSN support he can track all his friends that have their XBL account and MSN linked. slywink

I have a question about it; does it only enumerate games that have multiplayer Internet support? The reason I ask is because I have some legacy games on my older laptop, but they don't get identified by Xfire when it scans?

For chat I found that xfire's voice chat didn't match Vent's so  I spend a couple of £'s a month which gives me a commercial vent server. In terms of the legacy games, the games definitely don't have to be MP games - the Witcher for example will detect http://www.xfire.com/games/ lists all the games. Sometimes in xfire you have to tell a game to manually detect because it is running from a different location to what it expects - steam games are a good example of this.

At home I now use xfire linked to MSN which works really nicely as it changes your name to your name/game you are playing so you are able to show the game you are currently playing even to your msn buddies

I'm not surprised Ventrillo's chat is better, using dedicated -lower population- servers and all. I don't feel any need to go above Xfire's, but that's partially due to me not having to pay a cent for it. I'm surprised I get the quality I do with Xfire, since my Internet connection on most days is truly craptastic. The uncommon path could very well be the reason for my games not being detected, as I've installed all of them off of a route of 'c:\games'. I wasn't aware of the auto game/name prefixing for MSN; might be one of the reasons my son is so fond of that feature. slywink
