Agreed.  There is surprisingly little grind...everything you do is based around unique missions and goals, which are constantly changing to something new.  The only grind right now is getting past the login issues.

Starting to sound real grind-centric the more I read about it. I am going to take very seriously the warning to wait a month or two for the bug side of things to get fixed.
But if by then the community is still talking grind, I'll pass.
I love MMO's that can be fun and progressive even when you only have an hour or so to play.

People use "grind" now meaning different things.  I *think* you are referring to the traditional definition, where you had to keep killing mobs in certain spots to gain xp.  This is NOT that type of game, though in theory it could be if you really wanted.

Nowadays, people referring to grind are often just talking about the leveling process in general, no matter how you get there.  In that sense, yes, this is a level based game with level based content.  If you keep doing the same thing repetitively, you can argue anything is a "grind."  However, I think it has as many or more options to do the leveling than any other MMOPRG out there.  Here's a list off the top of my head:

1 - Traditional mob killing (also with rest xp)
2 - Mob killing in a group
3 - FATEs (free for all)
4 - Solo questing (main storyline, class storyline, sidequests)
5 - Hunting Log: kill specific mobs in specific locations, based on your class (class based, faction based)
6 - Levequests: daily quests, level based, difficulty can be adjusted, multiple types (escort, kill x, get x, etc)
7 - Dungeons (4-man party)
8 - Guildhests: I haven't done this but I think it's a group based levequest

On top of that, the class system lets you bounce around classes at will, so you can do some grouping with your main job/class for a dungeon, then swap to a lower class and do some story questing.  Most players I presume do a mix of all of these.  Generally if I'm not following the main story line, I'll jump to a spot on the hunting log, and then join roaming FATEs as they pop up, and then do any sidequests I come across.

In short, this game has plenty to do if you only have an hour or less.  It also has a robust system of traveling to get you where you want to go quickly, which is equally important to having multiple options.

As for multi-classing (discussed earlier), that's also up to the player.  A real min/max-er may want to do most all the classes to fairly high levels to get all of the specific cross class skills they want.  A more general player will likely do just a couple sub-classes.  Many of the cross class skills come at low levels, so for instance, there's almost no reason for any caster to not do at least up to lvl 8 of THM to get Surecast and the Thunder DoT.  Personally I enjoy the super fast leveling at low levels, I've now got a mix of ACN, THM, CNJ, and Marauder lol.

of course the mob killing could have been better done.  nothing like killing 3 of X only to find another quest to kill another 6 of the same x moments later.

Well I'm sure if you are anal enough you can plan ahead to fully optimize your xp-killing experience  icon_cool  Or you can be like me and kill a few of the mobs to get the chain bonus, then get the quest to kill the same mobs a little later, then even later hit the next tier of the hunting log and get to kill them one more time  saywhat

From the replies aimed at my concerns that I posted, I say thank you. I respect the people I know here, more than any other gaming forum.
Very good news about the lack of grinding in the game.........excitement, anticipation, back on track.

I wonder if there will ever be a MMO that gives "the trinity" of play styles most of the things they want.

All content achievable for solo players
PvP that doesn't feel like an after thought
Raiding that causes all you hard core groupers to salivate.

I know that I know, that there is going to be another Leviathan of a game that will impact the community to the level WoW did.

But this time, it will be for the die-hard, experienced players instead of newbie friendly.

I've told you all I'm a man of faith.!!
I believe, I believe, I believe.........................

8 - Guildhests: I haven't done this but I think it's a group based levequest

You should look into trying these. For the first time you go through (with your character, you wont gain a bonus if you switch classes) you gain a bonus to your rewards. The higher level ones (25 or so) will give you 10k exp. They are group missions that only take about 5-10 minutes.

Just logged on

straight into .....a queue(of 5 people)

However,it still took less than 30 seconds to get into the actual game(queues have always been very fast for me when i am in one for this)

no error message, servers loaded up fine

Some Things to consider before getting giddy
-It's 11am here in UK,that means most of Yankland are at bobies
-Its a School/Work day..the little monsters are back at school and people still go to work in this country(so i am told)
-maintenance has only just finished,so i may be some of the first of many to try and get on

I was able to log in this morning at around 7:00 MST.  So non-peak, weekday seems OK...we'll see what happens tonight or this weekend.

Peeking at the tech support forums, the 3102 error (game still thinks you're logged in after you exited) seems to have reared it's ugly head again.  frown

Yeah, I was finally able to create a character on Coeurl... of course it was 7am on a school day following a patch. Now I need to consider if I really want to start over just to be on the same server as some strangers on the internet. slywink

I am concerned by the fact they only added 1 new server for each region. I can see why they would want to be conservative, but I am not sure it is the right move.

Apparently I spoke to soon...looks like the maintenance didn't do much.  Been trying to log in for the last 1/2-hour and have been getting a steady stream of "Lobby Server Encountered an Error" or "Unable to Update the Group NA/EU" error messages.  Finally got in, and now I've got the dreaded 3102 "You are still logged into the game" message, which means I can't play until their customer support physically logs me out.  Since it seems like everyone is getting this error, I'm guessing it'll at least be a couple more days before I get a chance to play.

FF XIV is nothing more than "Fun with Error Messages" right now.  disgust

I can see it now.  As you know we've been having a series of unforeseen incidents that has marred our debut of our biggest game yet in the FF series. Because of that, and with deep regret, we must inform you of our plans to do a complete do-over if you please.
Which entails a complete wipe of our servers of all customer data. We have our tech guys now installing an up to date defragging program, and we believe with the addition of 150 new servers, with borrowed server space at NASA, this second attempt will be a successful launch .

Thank-you and keep watching your e-mails for when we are ready for our re-launch...

Sincerely: Dumbfounded and associates.

Honestly, that's a big, big downside to a MMO not signing you off after a while. A very very strange choice of theirs IMHO.

I tried it earlier (4 est) and just now (8:30 est) and I went in right away both times.  Much, much better than before.  The official posts say the server capacity has increased from 5000 to 7500 and it seems like the queues handle over 1000 now (vs 400 earlier).  The real test will be this weekend but I'm much happier than I was this past weekend.

Those who have run the Ifrit dungeon (is it a dungeon, or just a boss fight?)...how long does it take to complete?  Login issues aside,  I've had a couple 30 minute sessions available but didn't want to jump in in case I couldn't finish it.

Those who have run the Ifrit dungeon (is it a dungeon, or just a boss fight?)...how long does it take to complete?  Login issues aside,  I've had a couple 30 minute sessions available but didn't want to jump in in case I couldn't finish it.

haven't gotten there yet, mainly because the amount of back and forth quests leading up to it are ridiculous.  thank god they put in a decent fast travel system, otherwise I might have thrown in the towel the 4th time I needed to go back to Drybone, or even when I had to go back to the far side of a completely different zone.

If you know what to do, it'll take about 10 minutes to do the actual dungeon. (Hint: HIT the thingie that comes up in the middle of the fight, or you will all die)

The Danish Bacon Razzles is correct, the Nail pops up through the ground half way through the fight, switch to that destroy that then switch back....surprisingly easy boss fight, but so very very awesome, but then again Ifrit always likes to put on a show in these games

It's not even really a dungeon,it's more a cutscene with a boss fight, and yeah you get 90 minutes to complete it,but you only need 10
