It will only remind me of UO if banging on a straw dummy with your sword for several hours is considered an entertaining way of leveling up a skill.  Roll Eyes Lets party like it's 1997!

I think my weak point on MMO is in fact a level/XP fixation. Once I hit the level cap, I lose all interest in the character, and sometimes in the game. So I guess in that regard, I should be keen on something that does away with it as feeling fresh.

some screenshots, probably all CGI, although a couple look like they could be in-game.

Yeah, most (all?) of these are from the CG video they showed to announce this.

I couldn't tell about the landscape shots (2 and 3), and the first one I was leaning towards CGI but not definite.

Personally, I'm gonna say yes. I really don't know when, but I think that SE will do it just to get the additional player base. Of course, I have no clue how well FFXI is doing on the 360 here in the US.

If it's the same people that did FFXI I won't play simply because when your account expires they make you buy a new copy of the game AND create a new account to reactivate.  They wouldn't let me reactivate my old account and just pay the monthly fee when I tried to play again a year after I stopped.  That's complete bullshit.

Yup, that's SquareEnix for you - the ONLY MMO guys in the ENTIRE business to make you go through that bullshit if you decide to quit for a few months. Oh, and they delete your characters, too.

If it's an MMORPG, and if it comes to the 360, and I started playing it... let's just say that it's been rather nice having my life back (from FFXI).  If I cave and get FFXIV - then I'll cry!   crybaby

360 version looks likely...xbox live holding things up..?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ffxiv-looks-likely-for-xbox-360

Quote
Final Fantasy XIV Online producer Hiromichi Tanaka has revealed that Square Enix is "in discussions" with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version of the MMO. The hold-up, apparently, is being caused by Xbox Live.

"For FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] internet, that's something we're in discussions with Microsoft [about] - to come to an agreement," Tanaka told VG247 at gamescom.

"That's one of the reasons it's not going to be launched at that point," he added, referencing the simultaneous PC and PS3 release next year.

why it can't be the same as Final Fantasy 11 i don't know..or Phantasy Star Online for that matter

Yeah, I loved the game but the billing and Play Online service was just way over the top. I forget how many screens and logins you had to do just to play, but it was too many.
Coincidentally, when I was filling out the Beta form one of the reasons they list for why you stopped playing 11 was "Billing issues"

Sigh... I wandered into this Forum - a place I normally try to ignore, but now I find I've been getting a bit interested in FFXIV.  So, I'll bump this and get on GT notification mode - then pray that the monthly FFXIV subscription costs $100, which might be the only way I wouldn't "try" it.  You know, like I tried FFXI for almost two years.  icon_neutral

CeeKay, my life is definitely overrated (see your quote from August '09, lol) but I still had to pry my fingers off the 360 controller at the end of my FFXI career - and I was in a gaming funk for months after quitting.  What's that Soprano's line the Van Zandt guy kept mimicking?  They let you go, then they drag you back in!  Sorry, heavily paraphrased no doubt, but I can feel those hooks creeping up on me as I type.

Nooooo!   icon_eek

From CeeKay's link:

Quote
The way I always described FFXI was 'An MMO you want to love, but just can't.'. Lots of good ideas marred by even more lousy ones. Wonder if they learned any lessons from it.

I doubt they learned the most important lesson:  don't suck every penny out of every player while subjecting them to  gold-farming and rampant cheating.  That's enough to keep me away from Playonline and FF-MMOs, for good.  Okay, I'm probably lying, but I'm hoping if I put it in writing, that might help.

Plz, oh plz... don't start a 360 Beta!   icon_eek

The Joystiq images are amazing, but this worries me (my bolding):

Quote
The combat is similarly hamstrung -- to attack something, you have to target it, press a key to initiate combat, and then choose attacks from a skilbar at the bottom of the screen. Each attack requires a set amount of Stamina, which slowly recovers as the battle goes on. It's as close as MMOs are going to get to replicating turn-based gameplay in an online world, but it lacks some of the fluidity and speed of other entries in the genre.

No, no, no!  Not turn-based, please... I want it more like an action RPG, not less.  I hope that this comment is due to it being based on an early Alpha version of the game.  Wait, maybe this is good news for me - that and a high monthly fee could keep me away from a return to MMO Land.  Maybe.

seems Squee are STILL in those talks with MS

http://www.rpgsite.net/news/733/square-enix-still-talking-with-microsoft-on-ff14-for-360.html

Quote
Square Enix "still talking with Microsoft" on FF14 for 360
Posted on June 19, 2010 by Alex Donaldson

The Producer of Final Fantasy XIV has told RPG Site that his development team and the company are still in talks with Microsoft regarding bringing the Square Enix MMO to the Xbox 360.

When asked about the status of an Xbox 360 version by RPG Site during an E3 2010 interview, Hiromichi Tanaka replied "We are still talking with Microsoft about an Xbox 360 version, but at the moment we are only working on the PS3 version and Windows version."

When asked if the lack of an Xbox 360 port was down to Microsoft's strict Xbox Live Policies, Tanaka refused to elaborate. It's clear that for now FF14 is remaining PS3 and PC only, but Tanaka and his team definitely seem interested in an Xbox 360 port. The PC version of the game on show at E3 2010 was compatible with Xbox 360 controllers.

Check out the full interview here and our hands-on impressions with Final Fantasy XIV here!

Be sure to stick with us for the latest on FF14 via our RSS Feed, Twitter and Facebook pages! We'll be giving away Beta keys once the Beta begins, too.

and Myto i would expect the monthly fee's to be the same as other MMOs($10?)...i doubt SE would higher the fee(or lower it even)than other MMOs

is this game still in its Alpha stage but due at the end of the year?..is that even possible?

For some reason I was thinking FFXI was $15 (about 10 GBP/ 12 Euro) - and each extra character was another dollar, so most people were paying almost $20 a month.  Maybe it was $10 to start, and the higher cost was from those extra characters - which the game pretty much forced you into.  That might be where I got the $15 idea from.  No clue... the brain cells holding those memories are either dead now, or they are holding FFXII, FFXIII, and Monster Hunter Tri info, lol.

Plain old $10 with no extras needed, would be much, much nicer... uh-oh!   icon_eek

I think microsoft wants too much in exchange.  There has to be a good reason that every single mmo planned ends up falling through (except pso I guess)

Interesting... I still have XBL Friends playing FFXI - sometimes several.  I wonder what worked back then - and still works to some degree - that won't work now (other than greed or desire to control the market.)  Could it be something to do with trying to cut out Playonline Viewer?  It may have been the best MMO interface ever, for all I know, but I hated it.  It seems to me that MS should just develop its own MMO - make it anything like WoW, FFXI, PSO, etc. and I can't imagine it wouldn't work.  Isn't 10 or 15 or 20 dollars a month for a small-"ish" group of XBL players, at least as good as $50 a year for the rest?
