I really liked FF XIV when playing as a tank...I love it as a DPS.  It's been a completely different experience with this new class, and I say with confidence that this is now my all-time favorite MMO.  I was just going to sub for 30 days and see what's new, but I re-upped for 90 days yesterday.  This is the first time I've ever looked forward to trying out end-game content on an MMO...they typically don't keep me interested that long.
I agree.  I've been enjoying playing a lancer.  It's unfortunate that so many mmo's rely on the group role trinity, and then make the tank role so stressful.  In FF14 there's no hiding the potential negative side of playing a tank since you have to do group content starting at level 15.  On a positive note, it seems like a lot of players recognize this and at least try to give the tank player commendations.  What's so interesting (to me) about this game is that you may be grouping with players that are doing a level 20 dungeon with you, but those players are already level 30+ in other classes...on the same character.

I got my chocobo last night.  I felt like I earned it after 3 group dungeons, 1 group primal fight, and 2000 company seals.  It's pretty cool how the chocobos have your grand company logo on their barding.

I love the fact that you can try out every class as the same character.  The only problem is that leveling a sub-class without any story quests (doing only leves, dungeons, and mob grinding) is downright painful.

Was a very productive FF XIV weekend.  I hit the level cap with my Bard (yay!), finished my class quest and got the first 4 pieces of blue gear and final Bard abilities, ran two new dungeons for the first time, got my first piece of Darklight gear (will have it this afternoon), finished the second to last tiers in both the Archer and a Maelstrom hunting logs, and made significant progress on the story quests.  I've got about a dozen left.

Looking forward to trying out some MMO endgame content for the first time ever.  I've got a rough plan together for getting iLevel up to 70 plus my Relic weapon, which should keep me busy for quite a while.

Gratz!

Now you gotta work on the beast faction mounts. They're good to work on while waiting for dungeons runs to launch.

Patch 2.3 was released this week, which brings a ton of new additions.  Wild Hunts (similar to FF XII), a new PvP mode, multiple new dungeons, a continuation of the main storyline, chocobo raising, on and on.  Most of the new content is intended for high level, so I'm very excited to get going on it.  Bard is now at iLvl 94 with an atma weapon, working on my animus books (got 2 of 9 complete).  All this new stuff should keep me busy until the expansion next year.  smile

Thought this was a cool sunset shot in Limsa Lominsa, standing right outside the Grand Company HQ.

The first expansion to FFXIV was announced yesterday, entitled "Heavensward".  Looks to be pretty awesome, and includes:

-  Level cap raise from 50 to 60 across all jobs and professions.
-  Massive new areas.
-  A new player race with both male and female characters.
-  Multiple new jobs.
-  New Primals, one of which will be completely unique to FFXIV.
-  Many new dungeons more than 3 or 4.
-  High-end raids
-  Airships, Airship, Airships Free Companies can band together and build their own airships.
-  New gear and recipes.

Will be out in Spring 2015.  Between this expansion and the ongoing patches (2.4 is rumored to drop this week), they are consistently adding a huge amount of content to the game.  Every time I feel like I might be getting burned out, they drop in something totally new that keeps things fresh.

Bard is up to ilevel 107 (max is ilevel 115), I have one other glass maxed as well and am working on White Mage, and I've started getting serious about the crafting and gathering classes.  Still so much to do...  smile

Yesterday's FF XIV update (2.51) added the Gold Saucer.  Triple Triad tournaments, Chocobo Racing, all the mini-games that were originally in FF VII, and the music...oh, the music.

Just when I thought I was out, the find a way to pull me back in.  smile

If you start in the Coeurl server, I can help get you started and hooked up with a really good Free Company (guild).

The first expansion for FF XIV, Heavensward, comes out next week.  I swore I was done with this game 3 months ago, but this expansion has me pretty intrigued.  I've jumped back in the last few weeks, and it's been lots of fun.  Finished the main story and my iLvl is now 113, which should increase by the end of this weekend (should have enough to get some 130 armor to replace my 110).  Not quite as high as I was hoping for, but it'll get there.

Here's my bitchin' disco coat (Snow's outfit from FF XIII, courtesy of some special event or another) and a shiny new bow.

Not looking forward to the crazy dungeon queues for DPS next week, but am glad that I'll have something to do besides crafting/gathering while I wait.  smile

Spent most of last weekend with Heavensward in Early Access, and the new content is absolutely awesome.  The Ishgard areas are stunningly beautiful, especially with the DX11 upgrade they finally implemented.  There's a ton of stuff to do, including a brand new 50-hour storyline, new dungeons, a bunch of new leves (including the very challenging Temple leves), and - most importantly - flying mounts.  Seeing my Chocobo take flight for the first time was a beautiful thing.

Very happy I decided to jump back in...even if it means every other game got immediately shoved to the back burner for the next, oh, 9 months or so.  smile

Yep, a really good one.  The Returners on Coeurl, rank 8 (max), Free Company house with all the amenities (crafting vendors & stations, retainers, chocobo stables, menders, aether wheel, etc.).  Shoot me an tell if you jump on and I can get you invited.  I'm Bayard Elderwood.

One thing to be aware of before jumping in.  Squeenix made the interesting decision to gate all of the Heavensward expansion content - including the three new jobs (Dark Knight, Astrologian, and Machinist) - behind the story.  It makes sense, seeing as how this is a very story-focused game (it is still Final Fantasy, after all), but will require lots of work before you ever see any of the new stuff...there's around 150 main story quests that will likely take upwards of 80-100 hours to finish.  It's a really good story and a fantastic journey, but some folks are pissed off they can't immediately jump right to the expansion content.  YMMV

I have no issue soloing.   My Dragoon is in the low 30's so it will be awhile before I see much new content

Over the last month, I've finished the Heavensward main story, max-leveled my Bard at 60, finished all the dungeons (although I haven't done the new Alexander raid content yet), unlocked flying in all the new zones, and am slowly but surely gearing up for the end-game raid stuff.  Currently at i163, and am hoping to be closer to i170 by the time the weekend is through.

The biggest challenge is that they made some wholesale changes to the Bard class that I'm not terribly thrilled about.  We used to have significant mobility with slightly lower DPS and some support abilities.  The new Wanderer's Minuet stance, however, has basically turned us into a rooted caster with significantly longer timers.  We can turn the stance off if we want to keep mobility, but we do so at about a 20% loss to DPS.  When you get up to some of the extreme primals, that simply isn't acceptable since they have hard DPS checks built in.  This revision has completely changed the playstyle, and has done so in a way I don't really care for (and I'm not the only one...there's pages and pages of people griping in the SE forums).  I'm torn on how to proceed:  I've invested so much time into leveling up this character (far more than any other game I've ever played), but I'm not crazy about how it plays now.  I'm leaning towards sticking with it and seeing if they make some changes based on player feedback, but I'll likely start leveling my Dragoon as well.  Just in case.

Soulchilde:  Did you end up jumping back in?
