Let's get this started shall we?  Anyone up for a PBEM Civ 4 game?  Current player limit is 8 for MP and we can discuss the settings to use.

UPDATE:
The current list is

Indians - Turtle
Persians - Lord Ebonstone
Greeks - Lockdown
England - Pricecs

Certainly I'm in.  However, when I was "testing" multiplayer last night, I ran into some snafu's.  Hopefully by the time we get at least 4 players interested, I will have it figured out.

I wouldn't mind taking a stab at this.  I never did it before, but it sounds like fun.

I'd be willing to give it a try. Game arrived this afternoon, so I'll be installing it this evening without hiccups, hopefully.

OMG, they put in PBEM?  That rocks!

I'll have to wait, however: there is a moratorium on new computer game purchases  frown

Although, if anyone wants to play an all-night marathon sometime, I'm in biggrin

Someone (preferably who has experience setting up a pbem) should take the ball and run with this.  I think we have enough to get a game going.

Anyone?  (btw - I'm in with the Greece)

I'm in also - never played PBEM, but the appeal of not being forced to play a full game at once certainly appeals...

I'll start one as soon as I get back from lunch.  PM me your e-mails, decide which civ you're going to play in the forum.

Interestingly enough, if you turn on the "AI take over" option in regular MP games, if a new player joins he can take over an AI.  We discovered this when I crashed out of the game and had to rejoin.

I wonder if something similar can be done for PBEM, where if someone drops out, the AI can take over or if someone wants to join he can take over AI.

Just tried it out.

Seems I'll need everyone to confirm whether they want to play, then select a civ and leader, then your PM all that info along with your email address to me.

I have to enter in everything at the start of the PBEM game.  Luckily, the game does include some methods of automation during play.  Namely the game includes its own mail client so you can send the next turn from within the game, and just double click to open any recieved turn files.

There's enough players interested to have 8 players, including me.  We need to decide which map settings to use.  I'm thinking either pangea or terra.  Pangea is self explanitory, but Terra starts everyone off together on a large continent, with a second continent (the new world as it were) located somewhere on the map which no one is on.  By the time people get there barbarians have usually overrun the continent with plenty of barb cities.

Continents has the very real chance of someone getting an entire continent to himself.

Okay, so LE and Lockdown are both confirmed as the Persians and Greeks respectively.

I'll go ahead and claim the Americans as Roosevelt, although if someone else wants the Americans I'll go with one of the Asian civs.

We'll be playing on a standard size Terra map.

Semaj, we're establishing that list right now.

So far it's just:

Persians - Lord Ebonstone
Greeks - Lockdown

Maybe post into the regular PC Gaming board to solicit a couple more?

Firaxis is saying a patch will be released soon, so let's wait for that to be released and then start the match with however many people we have.

How does PBEM exactly work?  I've never done it before.  How long does a game typically last?

Thanks.

p.s. the patch (1.09) was released tonight!

Basically, one person creates a PBEM game, fills in all the data from everyone, then passes it on to the next guy.  That player opens up that savegame, does his turn and then passes it on to the next guy.

They tend to get bogged down by players who don't check e-mail or have slow e-mail servers, though.  So it's best to keep the numbers small.

Setting the game setting to make one turn mean more also helps.

We went with playing on a pitboss server instead.  See the topic about my massive 18 player civ 4 pitboss game.

Ah. Yeah, I made the connection now. smile Unfortunately I don't think I could play as often as every 12 hours. 24 seems like a more realistic number for me.
