If you have trouble loading that site (it's OK now, it wouldn't open for me earlier), one of the fans found this splash page link (the press release link on this isn't active):
http://www.newzyouwant.com/NCsoft/CityofHeroes_GoingRogue_V1.html
Quote
Paragon Studios™ is proud to officially announce the next City of Heroes® expansion, City of Heroes Going Rogue™! This will be the first major expansion for the City of Heroes franchise since the launch of City of Villains® in 2005.

Praetoria, a utopian mirror to our own world, hides a dark secret. Exploring this mysterious alternate earth, the heroes and villains of this world feel an uneasiness of doubt creep over them. Loyalties are questioned. Choices are made. Lines are drawn. As they search for the truth behind Emperor Cole and his Praetorian guard, brutal foes and fierce allies emerge, turning this once blissful paradise into a battle ground.

City of Heroes Going Rogue officially opens the "mirror universe" of Praetoria and an all-new alignment system that explores the shades of gray that lie between Heroes and Villains. For the first time, Hero characters can become Villains and vice versa, enabling Heroes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and Villains to experience Paragon City™.
The lead community rep confirmed this stuff, but said it wasn't meant to go out for a bit, fwiw:

OK.  What does that underlined text mean exactly?  Is that saying I can make a villian character and start at level 1 in Atlas Park or Galaxy City to do missions?  Cause if that's the case, that is something I've wanted since CoV was released.   icon_eek

I just underlined it cause I thought it was interesting.  icon_smile That is how I read it though.

Dev Castle at the boards said more details will be out soon, but they truly didn't plan to announce it just yet. And it's not a practical joke, he reassured.  icon_smile

That is EXACTLY how I read it - you'll be able to make Hero characters on the Villain side and whatnot.

Frankly, I hate CoV's leveling areas, and would more than likely make a few more Villains if I could level them up on the Hero side.

Finally - I see they brought back the same CGI group that did their last trailer (never really released or used in the US) - they did a great job with the trailer, as simple as it was.

And it seems that Paragon Studios aren't sitting around and waiting for the playerbase to move over to Champions Online - they're staying in the fight.

And apparently they've been thinking about this for a very long while now (article posted just before CoV went live):

Quote
At some point you mentioned that heroes will be able to go bad. Can you give us more details?

Not quite, yet, but we have a ‘going rogue’ system, which will probably come in Issue 7 or 8, so heroes can go bad or villains can go good.

Blue's posted press release (interestingly, the UK press release):
Quote
BRIGHTON, United Kingdom – May 12, 2009 – NCsoft®, the world's premier publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), and Paragon Studios™, the developer of City of Heroes®, today announced the development of City of Heroes Going Rogue™, the first major expansion for the City of Heroes franchise since the launch of City of Villains® in 2005. As the name implies, Going Rogue will blur the line between heroes and villains in the first and longest-running super-powered comic book MMO game.

In the Going Rogue expansion, hero and villain characters will become immersed in the new parallel universe known as Praetoria, which is governed by Tyrant™, the evil incarnation of the game’s main protagonist, Statesman™. As gamers search for Tyrant and the rest of his Praetorian guard, implacable foes and fierce resistance will arise to face them from all sides, causing heroes and villains alike to question their loyalties.

City of Heroes Going Rogue will introduce a new alignment system that helps players explore the shades of gray that lie between good and evil.

For the first time, hero characters can become villains and vice versa, enabling hero archetypes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and villain archetypes to experience Paragon City™. Clearly marked missions, in addition to behaviors and decisions made by the player, will move a hero’s or villain’s moral compass, which could eventually change the hero’s or villain’s alignment.

Going Rogue will also introduce two primary new fictional characters representative of this alignment shift in the game’s lore: Maelstrom, a pistol-wielding hero gone rogue, and Desdemona, a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed.

“City of Heroes has brought a fresh new perspective to the MMO stage with its foray into the super-powered hero comic book genre, and we are excited to present gamers with even more innovative content in Going Rogue,” said Brian Clayton, general manager and executive producer at Paragon Studios. “For years, players could choose between playing as a hero or a villain. Now we will present a third, malleable path where players can be affected by the results of their actions, enabling them to further develop, unveil new perspectives, and overcome new challenges.”

NCsoft will share more details on Going Rogue in the coming months.
Again, "emphasis" is mine, not theirs.  icon_smile

I don't read it as you can just willy nilly go into COH environs with a villain, and vice-versa. It sounds more like you have some clearly marked hoops that will enable you to perhaps do that kind of thing.

Some of the Pocket D special event missions let Villains and Heroes team up, so that experience might help the devs a bit.

While I liked COV archetypes (in my Architect stuff, I find myself using Villain powersets quite often), I too didn't like the environs from a gameplay/travel perspective. I understand they wanted to do things differently, I just felt like the areas were spaced too far apart and they too early threw areas at you that were a pain in the butt to traverse without a travel power.

As I remember it, the initial COV producer came from a pencil-paper RPG background, and I wondered if maybe that just didn't translate as smoothly to PC gameplay as they hoped. I think he eventually moved off of the project.

There's a not yet terribly informative FAQ thread:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=13467605
Quote
Q: Do I have to change sides in order to play the expansion?

A: No.

Q: If you change over to the opposite alignment, can you change back?

A: Yes.

One worry about using Villains on COH maps -- many COV interiors (even if they looked similar to COH) were purposely designed with more spacious rooms and hallways to allow for Masterminds having pets everywhere. So I'm not so sure that Masterminds in particular would find it all that comfortable to play on certain COH maps that have claustrophobic hallways and rooms.

Veterans will recall that controllers had ridiculous numbers of pets at higher levels (something like 8 ) when COH launched in 2004, but they reduced that (I think it's 3?) partly for balancing reasons but maybe also people didn't get penned in (or feel penned in) by hordes of pets in the more cramped maps.

Sounds like they are getting ready for competition with Champions, but I doubt this will make me re-sub.

Not that I'm saying Champions is a better game. It's not released yet, so no one could know that.

I don't think there are many here playing anymore. My account is active, but have been playing WoW more recently. I suspect I'll be back for a while post Issue 17 or when Going Rogue comes out. This is still my favorite MMO I've played to this point.

So no server has more players from this site?  (in the unlikely event that they all happen to log on at the same time or use a free trial?)

Is there an exceptional character build wiki site available so that I can get the most out of my 14 days (plus whatever other free codes I can cram on to the end of this free trial)?

This doesn't mean anything right now (no sequel has been announced, and it might just be an effort to "protect" the COH2 name), but...

NCsoft trademarks City of Heroes 2

NCsoft had this to say: "City of Heroes is a flourishing franchise and continues to be the world's most popular super-powered hero MMO. While we cannot comment on City of Heroes 2 at this time, NCsoft is proud of City of Heroes' success and is looking forward to future product launches associated with the franchise, including the City of Heroes Going Rogue expansion scheduled for release this July."

If Champions were truly a "knock off," people like me wouldn't have been so disappointed and ended up not getting it. None of the fun I had in COH was there for me in Champions (just imho). I would've probably been perfectly happy with a "better looking" COH but CO wasn't and isn't for me. I didn't enjoy the combat as much, I didn't find any content as compelling as COH's task forces and story arcs, etc. I won't complain CO doesn't have a mission creator because to some extent that ruined COH for me (in terms of finding people to play regular content with) and was part of the reason I quit COH. Very little of the COH dev team is at Cryptic anymore (most are still back at Paragon Studios), so it's probably not an accident CO doesn't have the same feel.

Still, I don't think every super hero MMO is and will be a COH knockoff any more than every fantasy MMO is an Everquest knockoff.

Of course you're probably confused by this post because it starts off sounding like I come to praise Champions when in fact I came to bury it.  saywhat icon_razz I'm sure I'll re-visit CO at some point to try to find the fun some of my buds have found in it, just haven't so far.

I can't really read the tea leaves to see if there really is a City of Heroes 2 under development. I thought that a couple years back when some announcements suggested they had something "big" brewing, but I think the big turned out to be the Mission Creator, and then Going Rogue.

Hehehehe. CO looked pretty, but the whole time I read about that game I kept thinking 'Why should I just resub to CoH'? CoH looks pretty good still, even though its 4 years old.

I might resub for 'Going Rogue'. We shall see. But it would really cool if NCSoft could surprise us all with a big CoH2 announcement later this year.

We can only hope.

I kept my subscription to CoX active for many moons because not only did I rather give my money to a far smaller company (instead of say, somebody like Blizzard), but because I truly enjoyed the game.

CO...I most definitely did not like. Same with STO in the end. What's left of Cryptic (because yes, 95% or greater of the staff moved with NCSoft and formed Paragon Studios to keep working on CoX) is pretty much nothing but a name.

Maybe it's time to revisit CoX and preorder the expansion for the two new powersets... biggrin

If you're like me on my revisits, you'll find that as great an idea as the Mission Creator was, it rendered most of the servers' regular zones completely devoid of players because most players were busy trying desperately to exploit user-created missions for XP.

And I'm still not sure wading through 10s of thousands of player-created arcs to try to find a handful worth playing was as much fun as playing the developer-created content. And if you do create something worth playing, God help you in publicizing it unless you hire a full time PR firm.

I still love the game's combat, animations and many of the task forces and dev-created story arcs. I just miss the social aspect the game had lots of before WoW stole its thunder (for a few glorious months in 2004, COH got to enjoy mass subscriber base in a pre-WoW world), and the mission creator seemingly bled all the player base away from dev-created zones.

For the brief time I used the mission creator, I had a lot of fun but I'd ceased playing the game. It reminded me a lot of Lionhead's The Movies. Creating "creations" is fun but it's exhausting hard work (and when people slam it in feedback threads/messages, it's hard not to take it personally), and eventually it feels more like work than gaming, at least in my experience.

I'd be all in for a COH2, as I don't think Champions or the upcoming DC Universe is really "taking the ball and running with it" as far as super hero MMOs go.

Not sure what servers you were on but my impressions do not match yours regarding Mission creater.  There were more folks lfg with the tagline of 'no architect mish.' than there were folks looking for acrchitect missions.  This was on Freedom iirc and about 6 months ago.  There were more people farming bank missions than architect missions smile.  Now I still struggled to find a decent group on occasions but was pleasantly surprised that  i was able to find any and the level of maturity of the ones I did.  Great now I want to resub again.

Looks Like this goes live on the 17th and they are giving away a free 3 0ays to old customers + free jetpack for 30 days.  So it's about time for me to revisit.  I just can't resist trying out new powersets, Demon summoning and dual pistol sound pretty neat.  Downloading client now.

Do you have a link for this, I have been looking but so far am unable to confirm the 30 days for returning players only that since this is a compliation pack containing the original game new accounts are getting the typical first month free. Nothing on old customers.

Sorry for the confusion.  I got an email with a free 30 day code.  A come back and try the game type deal.  Independent of the expansion but timed accordingly i would presume. I do plan on picking up the new expansion and as far I know there is no 30 days free with that.  Though In a round about way  I am getting just that.

What, nobody mentioned that this went live already?

I'm enjoying it quite a bit-- Praetoria is very pretty and I really like the tip and morality missions.  Haven't had a chance to play around with the new powersets (except for Dual Pistols, but that was pre-released a while back), but I'm looking forward to getting some quality time in this weekend.

Has anyone else tried it out yet?

Yup. Current subscriber over here.

I'm finding the new starter 'area' a lot tougher than the other starter areas though, especially during missions. I'd swear it's spawning a lot more mobs of harder than usual difficulty than it usually does. Almost as if your default mob strength is set to +1 level instead of the usual +0.

Strongly considering picking this up.  Have an itch to play some superhero action, champions doesn't quite do it for me.  Where are you all playing should I decide to grab it?
