Uh...whoa.  Guess we might see some more servers for WoW in the near future?

Ya think?  And with Blizzard's next big game coming up (most likely Diablo 3) which should have heavy online use, they'll need those servers and more.

The article said Blizzard has "several thousand" servers world-wide.

Is that really true?  I had no idea they had that many servers hosting/running World of Warcraft.  That seems enormous.

Holy Cow.

I would assume they are for the expansion. This purchase would seem to fit into that timeline.

They've already got over 100 'servers' for WoW.  Presume that each server is actually a server -farm- and it starts making sense.  Then there's Battle.net, which is probably a few server farms by themselves (USEast, USWest, Europe, Asia, then seperate for WC3, Starcraft and Diablo 2).

These are probably for the expansion, yeah, expanding the server farms.

About fucking time they decide to upgrade their servers for WoW.

At least I hope that's what they're doing with them.

Jesus christ thats a lot of servers, but if you listen to Gaming Steves podcatst, he makes it clear that Blizzard has thousands of servers and thousands more people working on them, so this seems like a bigger number than it probably is in the grand scheme.

Put it to you this way - Ultima Online took roughly 20 servers to host a single shard, and WoW is a far cry more popular than UO and a hell of a lot more power intensive.  Do the math.
