odd, i was in the beta almost 2 weeks ago. the controls are awful, they are like 2-3 seconds behind when you press the button. not really worth it yet imo. maybe once they fix that i'll check it out, but tbh, nothing seemed special anyways.

Massively has some fresh impressions of this:
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/first-impressions-battlestar-galactica-online/#continued
Quote
Combat seemed simple and a little clunky at first. Remember that the game is running in your browser using the Unity engine, so take time to forgive it a bit. As I leveled up, learned new skills, and bought new ships, combat became not only much more smooth and dynamic but more strategic. Instead of needing to press a mouse-button every time I wanted to shoot my main guns, I found that they fired automatically. You lock onto a target and fly at it (or around it) while your auto guns send tracers across the dark sky. Items like missiles need to be fired individually, though, and abilities or triggered items like missile decoys are fired with a shortcut.
It seems like you can shoot down missiles (like with Plasma Torpedoes in STO).

I really can't tell from the official site if it's it's open beta now. I guess so, since if you sign up it prompts you which server to play on.
http://us1.battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/

I'm puzzled why the official site is so useless in terms of providing info on the game (yes, you can glean details from previews, it just seems odd marketing to have no info at the official site). Dug around their Facebook page, and Gamespot had some footage from the recent CES show:
http://ces.gamespot.com/video/6286109/
NOTE: The Battlestar Galactica footage seems to start at about the 1min 28sec mark; and ends at about the 3min 8sec mark.

Although initially the talk was it would be strictly space-based, there seems to be some avatar-footage (i.e., your character walking around in the ship bays and presumably getting quests from NPCs).

CeeKay: You may just be kidding, but no it wasn't a Cylon; after reviewing the video, it wasn't even above a character per se, it was sort of floating over a door. Although the footage is labeled XBox360, I'm pretty sure the representative running the game was using a laptop to do so (you can see him fiddling with one).

I grabbed a few captures from the CES video, including of the DOS prompt I mentioned:

Ships:

Briefing area where you check in with Adama, and I guess get quests:

I registered, but I guess you just have to wait and see if they approve one's application -- I guess they're looking for certain answers on the survey. The game browser "engine" is technically a plugin, and it appeared to be IE-only to me, which will probably scare off a few people right there if so.

Looks pretty. But it is missing a lot. I started as a Cylon and made a throw away guy like I always do to test. Then I wanted to test the Humans..but theres only 1 character / side per account. So I had to make a new account to try the other side. Then I decided I wanted to change my look...but theres no way to delete a character. Either people will be stuck or will need many email accounts and games registers to play more than one guy.

I had seen some promise in my brief experience but ultimately it didn't really hook me, and while the controls *sound* simple, I have some confusion on the UI. They had some helpful popup screens but once they disappeared, I tended to fumble.

IncGamers preview:
http://pc.incgamers.com/Previews/240/battlestar-galactica-online-hands-on-preview
General impression is it still needs an awful lot of work...
Quote
A bit more irritating was the slight lag which sometimes cropped up between control-input and on-screen movement. In a firefight this can get a touch frustrating.

Not, though, as frustrating or strange as the decision to give space in this game an 'up.' At present (and again, there's no telling if this will change before release,) you may be trying to loop and twist through the void, only to find your craft 'righting' itself against an invisible horizon with a curious spin and ending up pointing in the opposite direction because it's not allowed to fly upside down. If this happens when you're trying to do something innocuous like scan asteroids for materials it's aggravating, but when it disorientates you in the middle of a dogfight it can be maddening.

BSG Online ImageControlling your ship with the standard WASD keyboard set-up causes it to lurch across the blackness like somebody desperate to receive a DUI from the space rozzers. Using the mouse is slightly better (you either click the right button at where you want your ship to point or hold it down and kind of guide yourself around) but feels out of place for piloting a space vessel and a little unwieldy.
imho, Freelancer did all this right, in terms of making space combat with keys/mouse seem comfortable and so "right" I never had an itch to dig out a joystick, so it's a little disappointing dese guys seem to be stumbling in that regard all these years later.

Bigger than... Farmarama? Beebes? Dark Orbit? Nemesis 2030? Seafight? Case White? Deepolis? (from Bigpoints' web site). I'd advise re-reading their announcement as "this is the first game we ever put out that any measurable number of people wanted to play, or had even heard of."  smirk

I tried hard to get into the game (in beta), but something just didn't feel right to me. I'm hoping Dark Prophecy will better calm the space combat itch.

Started playing last night. Looks good and plays pretty well. Though if there's one thing that will kill it is the loading times. They're excruciatingly long and it doesn't help that sometimes it will get stuck loading. They need to cut down on the loading by making a download optional, otherwise this will not only kill their servers but inconvenience those who have caps.

Got to the part where you first start to do asteroid mining. They really need to improve how fast that works, cause it takes 5 minutes just to destroy a single asteroid which is way too long. The mining weapons just aren't effective enough. To add insult to injury, Adama says that the test of the mining weapon was successful and more efficient than your standard weapons. Yeah, right. I'd hate to see the standard weapons mining stuff at this rate.

the most recent update.  Looks like they updated the endinge last week:

However, with last week's Update we were able to upgrade to Unity 3. This was a big step forwards for the game, and Battlestar Galactica Online is now better looking, smoother and more stable than ever before.

they've also surpassed 1 million registered users.

37 of them actually play  icon_twisted
