Durham, USA – May 25th, 2011 – Funcom is excited to announce that the award-winning and critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online game ‘Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures’ will receive a digital re-launch this summer under the new name ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’. As well as reaffirming its position as the sexiest and most savage MMO in the world, ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ will also feature a hybrid business model allowing anyone to freely roam the vast lands of Hyboria either as free players or premium subscribers with access to extra content.

“With over 1.4 million copies sold, glowing reviews for both the core game as well as the expansion, and a healthy player base ever since launch in 2008, there is no doubt that ‘Age of Conan’ has been a true success story for Funcom,” says SVP of Sales & Marketing Morten Larssen. “Now we turn to another chapter in this story as we thrust ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ into the world of free-to-play games, a gaming space that is becoming rapidly more popular and profitable across the board.”

The new business model will give players the opportunity to choose whether they want to play for free or become premium subscribers, and Funcom is also introducing an in-game store to the game where both free players and premium subscribers can purchase exclusive content such as weaponry and mounts. For a full overview of what differs from the free and premium offerings, please view the Frequently Asked Questions now available on ‘Age of Conan’ community website.

‘Age of Conan’ has always been a Mature gaming experience, but going Unrated gives the development team freedom to stay even more true to the original works of Conan author Robert E. Howard, and use even more of the barbaric, brutal and sexy setting that is Howard's Hyboria. Funcom is already in the process of developing new locations, monsters, equipment and storylines for ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’. This includes the movie tie-in adventure pack announced yesterday, that will introduce content and characters from the upcoming ‘Conan the Barbarian’ movie.

“Everyone on the team is excited about opening up our world to an even larger audience,” says Creative Director and Executive Producer Craig Morrison. “The online world of Hyboria is constantly expanding as we continue to introduce new gameplay features and new content, and we truly believe that ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ will offer something truly new and unique to both new players and to those have already experienced the brutal online world of Conan the Barbarian.”

One thing I dont like, is that it says that you can purchase weapons?? Thats no good!

Other than that, with the movie tie-in, and the new expansion coming? Interesting days for AoC indeed and good news for those that liked it!

Sorry, pal, if you want free-to-play, you might as well get used to a Store being full of stuff you buy, though even the non F2Ps are pushing that these days.

Cool about the switch and I might be more inclined to get back into it once the switch takes place.

What does it mean that you are now introducing a hybrid business model?

In the simplest terms, anyone can play ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ at no cost. No subscription is required. You can download and play for free. [I gotta warn that esp. with a game like this, dropping the credit card barrier of entry probably means the influx of teens starving to see AoC's famous M-rated (now unrated) Boobies could be pretty bad  drool  icon_razz]

‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ offers player the option of playing the game for free, without obligation. The business model is a hybrid of the 'store only' free-to-play model and the tiered offering that includes a Premium subscription option. This allows us to let players experience everything Hyboria has to offer, while still offering great added value to Premium subscribers.

What type of in-game mail, chat and auction restrictions do free players have?

Free players' chat and mail is limited in the same way as in the trials. They can not use certain chat and mail options and may only send private messages (tells) to players who are their friends. The restrictions are in place to curtail spammers.
I hardly ever chat with anybody in the game anyway so that may not be too big a deal for me.

not sure why you would be surprised or disappointed in being able to buy something in a F2P game.  How do you think these things work?

Me?

I've played plenty of them thanks, but I rarely see games where weapons are part of the store - At least not the ones I've played.

AvA, WoT, DDO, pretty much every one I've played has weapons as part of the deal.

I dont see buying weapons as much of a problem except when its competative PvP. Hence why I never liked EA's stuff like Battlefield Hero's and that F2P BF2 game that just came out.

not being confrontational at all Raz!  Look at your first post and you put a lot of emotion in it saying 'That's no good!',  I was just susprised to see such a strong reaction to the option.

I'll have to look, but Kato and I have level 80's on one of the servers.  Fairly high pop too.  I miss the fatalities and the combat any time I play another MMO.  Our server was open pvp though, so tough skin is required.

Thin skin here it appears :-)

And yeah, open PvP is...hard! As for the weapons, well, I just think if you can just buy stuff you need, instead of crafting / adventuring for it, you take out some of the incentives for playing the game

I only ever played this briefly in the beta. One thing I don't remember  - are all servers PvP?

BTW Am I the only one who's bothered that Summer is officialy only weeks away, yet there's be no announcement of a AoC Unrated go-live date.  I was a longtime subscriber to Funcom's Anarchy Online, so missed schedules are a concern.

OK cool, thanks for replying Razgon. I've played a few MMORPG's as PvP, but myu liking is really for PvE with RvR zones. I plan on playing this free, so if it was only PvP I'd  pass as it sounds like there'll be some toon imbalance due to store bought weapons and gear. If there's PvE servers, I won't mind having my head handing to me in some occassional RvR.

Umm...there are RvR zones on the PvE servers - right?

sorry, didn't see this before now - There are some open pvp zones (No realm vs realm...those servers are long gone) but its mainly for highests levels.

There are Sieges though, if you get into a guild that does them, but never tried it. Basically, its a big pvp fest where two sides battle it out, where one control the fortress (its theirs to use) and the other tries to take it.

Well that sounds very much like what I consider RvR. It really sounds like RvR with guilds substituted in for dedicated realms - works for me. slywink

Well, the thing is, you HAVE to be in a guild, and then, its not a regular thing, perhaps something people do twice a week or so? I think its big undertaking, but again, never taken part of it, so I don't honestly know. I just know that people don't do it all that often, for some reason

Oh OK, got it. IIRC that's the way it worked in Shadow Bane too. That's a bummer it's not more open, but I can see where that might help prevent realm inbalance. Unless of course a huge guild shows up en masse. I remember times in DAoC, where realm numbers were dynamic and completely open, the inbalance was ridiculous with usually the Hibernians being on the short end of the stick. Luckily I was a Midgardian. slywink

It's here. The Free 2 Play Client has launched!! Unfortunately Funcom's website doesn't seem to be working properly, but I expect that's temporary as they're probably getting swamped.

The newest server is hardcore pvp with some very interesting rulesets.  I particularly like the fact that you can only have one character on the server per account.  This is to try to force reputation into mattering and I believe it will work.  People aren't as big of dicks when they can't hide behind multiple toons in mmos.

Plus you can't threaten to go get your main.
