Some people may be ok going from a Mercedes to a Malibu, but human nature is not to downgrade (especially competitive MMO players). That's why comparisons will be made.

To me WoW is more like the Toyota Corolla of MMOs.  It's reliable and accessible to the masses.  A hardcore gamer like myself whose taste is more niche doesn't necessarily want the car that competes with a Corolla.  A Mercedes would be a game like Shadowbane without all the problems.

Wasn't my analogy, was just running with it. WoW is accessible to the masses, but at the end game has fairly detailed and complicated game mechanics that the hardcore players can fully immerse themselves in. Just spend a few minutes on the elitistjerks website to see how involved and hardcore this game can get. My guild is hardcore players. I don't see them going anywhere soon.

One facet of WoW's success comes from trying to be all things to all people and accomplishes it just enough to keep them playing. Vanguard was supposed to be the EQ type MMO answer to WoW and all the hardcore WoW players that left for it eventually came back.

I don't think the majority of the 10 million belong to hardcore guilds like yours.  So I don't believe that the hardcore elements have that much to do with WoW's success.  Although it's probably true that WoW has converted many casuals who initially had no clue about MMOs into more hardcore gamers.

As to VG, I don't think it's demise had much to do with it's hardcore nature.  It was actually quiet an easy game  and you could cap out to max level much quicker than you can in WoW.  It had a lot of other technical challenges which is what I think killed it.  Content was an issue too, they had some huge cities populated with 1 or 2 NPCs at launch.  That sort of stuff is just unacceptable.

They're putting in a hyuuuugggge patch before the more or less "public" PvP weekend, complete with character wipe. Hopefully this massive update will make a liar out of my previous statements and bump me off of my fence sitting position.  icon_wink

I decided to pass on the PVP weekend.  They automatically make your character level 20 and I don't want to spoil any surprises skill wise.

Well I tried to log in 20 min after it started and it would never  let me in. Kept saying my name / pass were not right even though they were. I tried about 10 min and gave up. From what I read on their boards that problem along with MANY others kept most from even getting in or getting in then crashing or black screening. Saw a video on YouTube of character creation with naked headless guys falling through the boat, swimming around outside it, falling to the ocean floor running on it, and then running half in half out of the noob creation boat.

Thats just horrible. This is afetr I spent all day downloading and patching it. It was a 35 download then a 4 gig patch. Since Ive heard nothing I think Ill just delete it and forget it. I really had my hopes up on this one too frown

This was my experience the last time I tried to tech test this game.  These types of problems this close to release smells like AO i.e., a completely botched launch.  I decided to pass on this game until I hear good word of mouth on the released product.  I re-subbed to WoW to bide my time until the next big thing comes out.

Don't give up on it. The tech test today was in *much* worse shape than the general beta. It's really not a good barometer of the game's current state in the slightest.

I participated in both the tech test and the general beta this afternoon, and the difference between the two was night and day.

YK my buddy said the same thing that is in general beta.  It was supposed to be a stress test so for that it was pretty normal for a beta.

I wish I had gotten into the Beta for this one.  I really want to get back into some sort of high fantasy MMO.  As much as I thought I was sick of high fantasy, the more I realize it is the setting I most enjoy.  PotBS was fun for quite a while but then the nation I was playing for started getting utterly dominated.  Questing became near impossible to do and I just didn't really care too much for the random open sea battles.

As long as it is sliding off of the fence and not down a fence post we are good.

hopefully they can cut down on that size with the regular release.  that's a pretty good chunk of real estate.

Yeah I hope so too, I am not in the market for a system upgraed anytime soon.  Sadly I think larger hard rvies have allowed some developers to just get lazy and we get alot of unneeded bloat.

I'm sure some of that fat will be trimmed. I'm guessing some of the stuff in that directory is redundant data from having so many builds installed in the same directory.

Wasn't it a 35gb download?  Doubt they would be having you download their redundant data as well.

It wasn't originally a 35GB download, which is what I was basing my comment on. Though who knows, maybe the art assets really do take up that much room.

Well it looks like Amazon is offering the Bow, and a decent price as well.

GoGamer doesn't mention what the bonus in game item is.  I am torn between the Mammoth and the Rhino.

I would like to know how much content there is and how wide open the zones are.  I heard AoC has narrow zones without the ability to run around which would remove the immersion factor for me.

Open Beta has been officially announced. It starts May 1st and is through Fileplanet and its horde of offshoots. You have to be a paid subscriber/founder to sign up and sign ups start next week.. There will be 50,000 slots available.

Paid subscribers only and 50,000 slots doesn't QUITE fit my definition of 'Open Beta' but if you're one of the folks that pays bucks to fileplanet they have an auto notification system you can sign up for that will let you know as soon as the actual registrations start.
