I resubscribed just to look around and also because the starter areas of WoW are like old friends to me...very meditative to just roam around.

I like what they have done for quest tracking both on the map and on screen.  They really have put a lot of work into the game and it shows.

Ran into a tethered pair in Brill.  A lvl 7 paladin named wuj towing a lvl 7 priest named wuk.  He switched to the priest after the paladin went low on health in a fight against a lvl 11 something.  You could tell because only 1 of the 2 was active at a time.  Is this a new gold farmer thing or just someone running 2 accounts at once?

Dual boxing has been around since EverQuest.  I had a friend that would dual box at his house with a Linux laptop running a packet sniffer for the zone he was in to tell him where all the beasties were.

... and in the early days that packet sniffer would tell you what loot each beastie was carrying as well. Oh Verant, how naive. That's when I realized how dastardly people really were. I guess I was as naive as they were.

Jaddison, what server are you on? I too just did my free 10 day on my account to log in and check things out. I am over on the RPG server Silver Hand. And yes, lots has changes since I had last logged in back in 08.

I am on one of the servers designated "new"....Trollbane maybe.  rolled a DK so I could go farm wailing caverns.  I have a paladin to 12 and a mage and rogue to 10.  Those areas really are like old friends.  I feel almost as comfortable in the LotRO starter areas as well......only an alt-o-holic like me could probably get this way.

I rolled a Pally and he is level 11. Never played the Alliance side of things so the newbie area is a completely new experience to me. Kind of nice.

They are doing RAF (Refer a Friend).  It gives 300% exp for quest and monsters.  I've done it myself (twice now) as it's a quick way to rocket to 60.

That's how I feel, I think most people who loved playing WoW at some point feel this way. With Cataclysm in the headlines a lot lately I got the urge to play again, started a Tauren Shaman. I figure I should explore Azeroth one more time before they change it forever.

so, say someone was thinking of getting back into WoW to see it before everything changes and they don't have any of the expansions.  at what point would it be time to grab the expansions so they're not just large chunks of data sitting around taking up HD space?

But if you're just trying to take a stroll through Azeroth, not counting the new continent added in WotLK, you only need the original.

I've spent my whole Sunday playing, I started a Tauren Shaman, I went with Tauren because I've always loved Mulgore. I've even been teamed up with the same kid (he's a whiney bitch, but at least he keeps me company) all day, we got to level 12 together.

It's definitely nice to revisit the old world, it's going to be sad when they change it and we can't go back.

Also, the graphics are still every bit as beautiful as when the game first game out. I know they've souped them up a bit, better textures, more foilage, new shadows and lighting, but it still the same.

I don't know, I think I've seen enough of the Old World to last me forever.  I've always loved playing the low level areas, I'm looking forward to leveling up one or two characters 1-85 and getting to see the new content in  Azeroth.

OK, I got this a week and a half ago, and it's mostly fun learning process. My initial character was a Undead warlock, but I believe ~75% of what I saw was Undead Warlocks.  So this weekend I made a Tauren druid with the intention of creating a Tank, since ~90% of the people I see on the low level server I'm on are some form of ranged attacker.  I got up to level 19 (painfully) through mostly solo play, but the last four days on the Darrowmere server a group of ~Level 60-80 Alliance players keep sweeping into the Barrens, slaughtering everything between Rachet and Crossorads, and then hanging around for half an hour killing anyone who wanders in trying to turn in a quest. disgust  At one point, someone obviously called their guild because we had an instant wave of Horde 80's pour in and start wailing away on the attackers.  Seeing as this a non-pvp server, I didn't think this kinda thing would be this prevalent, but this has been happening since last Friday consistently.

If you are on a non-PvP server they can't attack you unless you flag yourself for PvP.  You should be able to turn in quests without a problem unless they keep killing the quest givers.

It sounds like that's what is happening.

Jake, are you on a high population server? If you are you might want to see if you are eligible for a free character transfer to a low pop server.

I've always loved the Shaman class, and I want to get my currently level 12 Shaman to 80, but I'm really not sure if I can make it through the BC content. I like a few of the zones, like Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh, and Terrokar Forest, but the rest just don't do it for me.

You know, initially the way I understood it all of the original content was being changed. However now I'm not sure if that includes the starting areas, the capital cities, and so on. I'll look into this.

Just FYI, the leveling in BC is much easier now.

I went from 58 to 63 in Hellfire, moved directly to Terrokar and hit 65, went to Nagrand until 68 and left for the new world.  With rest experience, you really don't spend a ton of time in BC if you don't want.  You don't have to hit 5 or 6 zones anymore.

jersoc, how much do you play WoW typically? I know we talked about this before, but you seem to be able to squeeze in plenty of other games (like FF13) as well so I'm curious.

I only ask because I don't think I've ever played WoW casually, whenever I'm playing it I play it exclusively and I end up burning out and quitting for a long time.

That's the problem.  I used to be that way in all MMOs, but not anymore.  Especially not in WoW, it's not necessary since it's so laid-back and accessible.

it depends. when i work it's only about an hour or 2 before hand(i work a 2nd shift job). yesterday and today are my weekends and also our raiding days so I play a bit more. We usually raid for about 3-4 hours on tuesday and another 2 or so finishing up on wed. i say in total between 20-25.

i have taken a break twice. i quit a few months before bc and also about 5 months before wotlk. the main reason is because i work a 2nd shift job i could pretty much not do anything and all the raids were 25 man. my guild is in between casual and hardcore and we don't actively spam trade for recruiting(i think this is the worst method and gets you nothing but idiots). with the advent of all raids having 10 man most of my guild returned and we've owned everything but LK so far. Biggest draw back is a few people are finishing school.

But yeah, having a 2nd shift job pretty much means I have lots of time because I don't get home til 130am and it's not like everyone I know is awake. So that leaves plenty of time to play other games after work.

I think the biggest part of not getting burned out if just finding the right guild. I've played so many MMOs that others from guild don't and I can never find a guild like mine I have in wow. Everyone just gels with each other and we joke around so much. The majority of us take the time to learn the mechnics well too and we help those that aren't. I think if my guild was a hardcore raiding with set requirements it would not be just as fun. We did this in vanilla and it was just a drain. Trying to run a help run a guild with 40 other people was not fun. The farming for mats was not fun and the constant wiping was not fun. Since that's all changed it's a lot more enjoyable.

But yeah, I can see how people get burnt out. The only thing that pisses me off in this game is seeing how pvp was just become utterly unfun. I use to be a huge pvp'er and ever since arenas pvp is so retarded now. I seriously hope they fix the shit out of this in the expansion.

Having a good guild can make all the difference. I continued to raid more because of the fun of the guild than anything else. In time, even that wore off and we all took a long break until Cata.

BTW, they said that they are moving away from Arenas and will make BGs the place to get the better gear.

that's a great change. many of people in my guild, myself included, hate arenas but like to BG every once in a while. I fairly optimistic about rated bg and hearing that I can get some good gear from pvp is a great change.

This.

I was in one of the top raiding guilds in the world at launch WoW, but we had a mandatory attendance requirement.  I'm talking like 6-days a week mandatory.  And yeah, it 'paid off' in the sense that you got the see all the raid content first in the world and got the best gear.  But jeez, I just couldn't do it after several months.  Totally took the fun out of the game.

Told myself I would NEVER join a guild anymore with any kind of mandatory attendance, and it's a much better way to enjoy the game.

Also I totally agree on PvP... Arenas fucking suck.  BGs should be where it's at.

Celestial Steed now available....$25 at the Blizzard Store.
http://us.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=1100000942

Already seeing them in game. Pretty cool looking. Binds to account and scales with mount speed. So even your level 20 can ride it. Acts as a ground and flying mount.

Or from this tweet:

Update on #WoW Celestial Steed: 77,500 orders in queue. 6hr wait. At $25/ea, that's $2M waiting. 15min window to buy is poor implementation.

That...is just wrong.
