Some hands-on stuff from Sony's Gamers Day was apparently finally "unclassified" so you'll see some more detailed previews of this Unreal 3-engined, actiony MMO for a change. These still aren't "hands-on" though, just sort of "in person" impressions from watching SOE folks play.

Joystiq impressions (May 26)

Immediately, it was clear that the PS3 version wasn't running on par with the PC version (which is probably why this was the first time the PS3 version had ever been shown). The PC version ran smoothly with sharp, crisp graphics and superior textures, while the PS3 version suffered from noticeably lower-quality textures and a slightly sluggish framerate. Overall, the PS3 version still looked quite solid, but when displayed next to the PC version, the disparities were very apparent.

...

The PC version was particularly impressive and appeared nearly complete, while the PS3 version was definitely a step or two behind.
It's obviously early (it's scheduled for a 2010 release), but that sounds a little alarming for something pitched so heavily as a console MMO.

... The Agency is divided between two factions. On one side you have Unite, an organization described as sleek and sexy (you know, Bond-ish). And on the other, there's Paragon, a rough and tumble outfit that leans toward Rambo-esque bravado. While the groups are competitive in the sense that they're both trying to be the number one, super-secret spy organization in the world, they're not enemies per se -- you won't be fighting against Paragon's members if you decide to join Unite (though there are some PvP elements in the game). Instead, there are numerous villainous groups that you will be tasked with taking down, regardless of your affiliation.

Quote
The game incorporates both action- and skill-based gameplay. There are no RPG elements applied to the shooting aspect, a la Fallout 3 or Dues Ex -- a headshot is a headshot. Instead, SOE has developed several different representations of character growth. One such element is the "operatives." Operatives are "collectable" NPCs (unlocked by completing various missions) that can lend support in the field, spy on enemies, or craft items (think Q or Moneypenny from the James Bond series). Currently, there are over 480 operatives in the game, each with a unique personality and abilities.

...

Skills are abilities that can boost players' defenses, attacks and other actions and are unlocked as missions are completed. Their usage is limited by a stamina gauge, requiring players to manage their skills usage wisely in order to tackle some of the harder missions.
The latter is maybe more MMO-ish.

The Operatives part reminds me a little bit of the canceled Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, where you would have more than 130 minions (pets, basically) to choose from for your party.

Oh dear...

"No reboot" to The Agency as staff leave

Eurogamer has learned that several senior staff have left Sony Online Entertainment's Seattle studio - the developer currently making espionage MMO The Agency for PC and PS3 - including the studio head.

Studio director and executive producer Matt Wilson, art director Corey Dangel, and producer John Smith left at the start of July to form a new studio called Detonator Games, as confirmed at the Detonator Games website.
That doesn't mean the key programmers and such have left, though I'd be curious whether their new enterprise might try to poach some SOE employees, especially given that SOE had a round of layoffs recently.

It does strike me as a bit risky to do a start-up before the game that presumbly would build your reputation has even released.

They left to create a studio called Detonator? Does this mean they're possibly considering a game or MMO based on the Detonator Orgun anime? Earth forces vs the Evolutor would be awesome opposing factions! Damn...I'm going to have to pay attention to this new studio. slywink

That could be awesome too in a Tron sort of way, especially if it involved Detonator vs. Catalyst factions.  icon_cool

the Detonators would totally nForce their will on the Cats and the poor 3dfx faction would get caught in the Crossfire.

Per CeeKay's link in the Planetside Next thread...
http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-planetside-next-team-expanding-2462.htm
Quote
As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios. As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games.
This seemed likely a while back after a couple of The Agency's key people moved on to form another dev company (I totally forget the details, I'm afraid).

I guess if you want to split hairs, "discontinuing production" isn't quite the same as "canceled," and no doubt Sony will hang onto the IP in case there comes a time to revive it or pass it on to another dev (as happened with Perpetual on STO and Gods & Heroes). But I think "canceled" is pretty accurate for now, right?

Pretty unfortunate, as they've been talking about this for a long time and no doubt put a lot of work into it. Seemed like a cool idea. They had that whole Facebook game linked to it and all.

Wasn't their goal to create a multi-platform MMO?  I don't think that has worked out well for anyone...yet.
