Windows/CD Drive Debacle?-New DLL Copying Issues! 17/dec/04

My wife was copying photos to a cd last night, when the machine locked up (winxP).  She tried to do an end task with no luck, so she held the power button until the machine shutoff.

Now when the machine is rebooting, it gets to the windows load screen and hangs.  Nothing occurs other than that green bar going across and across and across.

Repeated attempts to reboot end in the same result or the 'safe mode' selection screen appearing.

Any ideas?

Did you actually try and boot it into safe mode? I will assume that you did. If it is still not working, try booting to the windows xp cd and running the repair utility. I had to do the same thing the other day on my laptop when the SP2 install hung up on me.

When trying to repair the install the installer hangs and says it cannot copy various files...it starts with several .dll files.  Then says if you want to skip the install of this file...but windows may not work properly.

Any thoughts?

How long did you wait on a regular reboot before deciding that things were hung?  Try giving it a good long time - it may be installing some updates that get applied on reboot or doing some disk checks because of the crash.  Then I'd just go ahead and skip those files on the repair.  Windows is already not working properly, right?
