My little brother's Windows 7 desktop seems to be stuck in some kind of Groundhog Day 'startup repair' loop. He told me he had "some kind of blue screen" Sunday morning and now every time it boots it chugs away for awhile and then puts up a list of options with the subject as the title. From there he can "Send information about this problem" or "Don't send".
The details of the problem show "Problem signature 07: CorruptFile" but there's no indication that I can see from the other "signatures" what the actual file is that might be corrupt. The fact that he lives in another state and we're troubleshooting by him sending me cellphone screenshots complicates this. We tried some things I found poking around, specifically going to the command prompt and trying the bootrec commands to "/fixmbr" and "/fixboot" both of which were successful but neither of which changed the behaviour. He's tried to restore a system image, it finds one from May 8th but any attempt to restore it "cannot be completed" and fails. We tried going into Safe Mode for grins, he was able to hit F8 and initiate it but all that got him was right back to the "Startup Repair cannot" screen. Everything we try just ends up taking us back there.

Any ideas on where to go from here?
