PS3, Blu Ray, and Sound set up

I am stumped about this, so any help/explanation is appreciated.
I Have a PS3 being used as a 3D blu-ray/DVD plater along with games. The PS3 is connected video by HDMI and receiver by Optical Cable.
When running a DVD, the receiver shows 5.1 all speakers used. When running Blu-Ray, the display shows PCM two speakers. Ok, I figure that I have not set the BD Audio correctly in the PS3 menu. I change the Bitstream options, the Linear PCM options, no change. No options on the Blu-ray disc for English 5.1. However, I can hear sounds from the rear speakers. Still experimenting, I swaped the language options on the disc, from English to Spanish, to French to Portuguese. Every alternate sound track shows the 5.1 display. To me that indicates hat there is no set up issue. The test discs were Deathly Hollows pt 1, swapping from blu-ray to DVD and back to check different configurations. Issue first noticed when watching Lengend of the Guardians.
Open for ideas, or willing to give more setup details.

So... you have HDMI from the PS3 to your TV and optical from the PS3 to your receiver? Does your receiver not support HDMI? If it does, I'd suggest trying HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV.

No HDMI on the receiver, too old for that.

Too bad. So, what receiver do you have? Curious what formats it will support over optical...

An older JVC. It supports PCM and true Dolby.
