Hmm, if I do some fancy relabeling of my ATI 9800 Pro, can I sucker someone on Ebay into thinking it's a new card?  icon_twisted That was my first thought upon seeing NVIDIA dig up a number better known as an ATI model.

I'm just afraid that the more the GPU companies push $600, $700 video cards, the more marginalized the PC gamer base is going to get than it already is and more "Hell with PCs I'm getting an XBox360" threads you'll see here. People like to say "it was always like that," but it wasn't. There was a stone age day where $199 or $249 got me the top of the line, current video card. I miss them days.  crybaby

Unless they've drastically changed the architexture from the 7 series GX2 card then it's not actually 1GB of videoram. Sure.. it's all physically on there, but because of the way SLI is setup at a hardware/driver level then you only practically have 512mb or ram. Having two 768mb GTX's doesn't give you over a gig of video ram. You're game is still only using 768mb worth of textures at a time at best. The reason? Both cards always contain the same texture memory. The way they split rendering doesn't allow them to use your total, only the max on the individual card.

I was pretty blown away when that was explained to me the first time. Your fancy GX2 won't give you any better framerates at higher resolutions than people with regular old SLI setups.

It's worth noting that those "30% faster" notes are only in ideal situations and an actual SLI setup will pretty much always outperform it. In some cases for less money.

I bet you could pickup two 512mb 8800GT's for several hundred dollars less and get the same or better performance. Granted there's no benchmarks yet, but I can't imagine this one being a drastic departure from the results the 7950gx2 got relative to the other cards out at the time.

The one truly major positive to the GX2 design is that it only needs one PCIe slot. It means you can get SLI like performance on a non SLI motherboard. It's just a feature you pay a lot of extra money for.

I agree.  Nothing to amazing to see here.  Your last line reminds me of some game mechanic.  My motherboard only has 2 free slots so I can either go with 2 8000 series cards or use a single 9800 card and in the other slot put a stone of +3 to fire mastery.

Kind of disappointing for me because I do GPGPU stuff and SLI just useless for that.  I really wanted a single GPU with 256 processors.

ROFL

That said - I always wondered why the heck somebody would EVER need a 1KW PS. With two of these in a case, I now see why.
