Usenet newbie.

Er...How much bandwidth do headers take up? I'm using a new client (Newsbin), and I toggled some feature where it is downloading a bunch of default group headers that loaded when I installed the software. I walked away for 15 minutes, and noticed it was still updating. I looked at the traffic, and in the lower right corner it says "Count of all data downloaded: 22.8GB" And it continued to climb.

Clearly my HD isn't showing over 20GB of data added to it, as the DATA-DOWNLOAD folder is only showing 852mb. So what is this tracking? How does my ISP account for that number? Did I just use 20GB of bandwidth in 15 minutes?

Hmm...Newsbin sent me this:

Newsbin  stores  most  data compressed and for that matter most header
downloads  are  compressed.  If it reported 22 giga downloaded, that's
probably  how  much downloaded but, over the Internet, it was probably
closer  to  2.2 Gb of data over the net compressed by a factor of 10
or  so.  Same  thing  for  what's  stored  on  disk.  Newsbin  uses  a
combination  of  real  and  logical  compression to store trimmed down
versions of the downloaded data.

That's the accurate number (the 852MB). And yes, Newsbin does do what they mentioned (and why you have that little program running alongside Newsbin (or some other method as I haven't fired up the program for a while now) - as it's handling the compressed headers and turning them into something the program can use for you).

And yes, pulling headers can take a serious amount of time the first time you look at anything - their retention rate is absolutely insane.

Long, long time Newsbin user here. biggrin
