Our old laptop's screen broke and I need to access pictures that are on the hard drive to move them to our current laptop.

I've attached pictures of the hd, and an adapter I purchased in order to accomplish this.

I now think I purchased the wrong type of adapter.

Will what I bought work?

What would be the easiest way to accomplish this if not?

Thanks in advance.

That looks correct.  Does it have all of these parts:

If so you just need to this:
Black cable on the bottom goes into the end of the box on the usb cable and into the matching connector on the end of the HDD.  Power adapter flat connector also goes into the HDD (don't plug it into the wall yet).

Now the HDD has one half the connector connected to power and half connected to the small black cables (SATA cable) that goes into the adapter. Place the HDD on a flat mostly non-conductive surface (desk should be fine).  Plug the power in.  You should hear the HDD spin up.  Wait 20 seconds.  Now plug the USB in.  It should show up as long as you didn't have an HDD password set.

I do have all of those parts, but still had a hard time connecting the adaptor.  Not sure why.
