Need a new laptop

The LCD screen broke on my HP and the video card went out on my desktop, so we are in the market for a new laptop.

I really haven't been following CPUs for the past 3 years or so maybe you all can advise.

Here are our requirements:

Budget $400, no gaming required
At least a 500 gig HD and enough RAM for Windows 8 (4 or 6?)
Fast enough to handle basic computing and HDMI out to our TV

I've been told that in this price range I should be looking at AMD chipsets, namely the a6 chip set?

It seems that Acer has some nicely specced models in our price range.

Thoughts?

if you stop using Obama wallpaper then you're less likely to punch the screen and break it 

seriously though, I haven't been following laptops myself but I imagine there's some great deals coming down the pipeline with Windows 8 releasing plus Black Friday coming.
