Not a single one.  It's a fresh install.  Not even the driver disc for the motherboard will install.  Everything gets about 75% through and then hangs there.  Even windows updates.   Another FABULOUS Microsoft product.   Roll Eyes   Anyone suffered through this yet?

8.1 hasn't officially been released yet, and it looks like they are going to have a huge day 1 patch when it officially launches.

Quote
In other words, Windows 8.1 RTM ó despite the RTM historically being the final, polished build ó isnít ready for public consumption. It either has some serious bugs that prevent it from being used as a daily driver, or a lot of niggling issues that still need to be buffed out. This means that you will probably be downloading quite a large patch for Windows 8.1 on October 18, to bring the RTM up to snuff.

I'd say reinstall Windows 8.0 for now.

The only issues I've had with my 8.1 install (preview build, assume you're doing that) is that I've yet to be able to play any steam games on my Surface Pro (video driver crashing). It's an Intel HD4000 though, so I wasn't expecting much success.

It did work (at least some did) on Win8pro. It is a risk of preview software.

Just a thought, but you could install win7 for now without activating.

Wow. 8.1 is -that- bad?

I'm tempted to turn off Automatic Updates right now, as my Win8 gaming rig is the one I use all the time.

well the pre-release is.  it'll be interesting to see how the official release is, but I'm sticking with 7 for the indefinite future anyways.

I've had less problems with 8.1 - other than the video driver. I just read that there is an automatic update which borks it (FTL support site).

I tried running Van Helsing this morning (retrieved my backup from my gaming PC so I can review some DLC) - crashed.

19 days till 8.1 drops. HURRY UP!!

It's not A driver...it's ANY driver.  Windows Update doesn't work, I can't update my video drivers (yay 1024x768!), I can't update my sound drivers, I can't update my USB 3.0 drivers.  Not ONE driver will install at all.  :/    If I can't use Windows Update, I guess manual patch when they launch?  I need my PC to function, so I might not make it that far....

8.1 preview? Does the OS hang, or just the installer?

Try disabling your CD/DVD drive, reboot and try installing again.

Don't ask why, just try. Tongue

Doesn't say preview anywhere on it.   *shrug*    The Installer hangs.  If I do an update through Windows Update it does the whole "Installing 1 of 6" thing on reboot and sits there forever.

Make sure to wear rubber lederhosen while doing it, and douse your head in canola oil.

I did a completely fresh install today (deleted the partitions and installed on a completely clean drive). I can't even apply the windows updates. It hangs. Even trying to disable something like the BluRay drive just leaves me with a spinning blue circle. Trying to update the NVidia drivers it gets 25% through and then sits there. Literally NOTHING is working.

This is a LGA2011 proc running on a Sabertooth X79 board with latest bios revisions. There is nothing that should be causing this nonsense. I'm at a complete loss.

Fuck this sorry ass operating system.  This is Windows Vista / Windows ME all over again.   Back to Windows 7 where shit actually works.  I'll wait for Windows 9.  It's true what they say - only the odd number Windows releases are good.

I meant disconnect physically. There have been some reports of this type of thing happening (not just disabling it)

Perhaps disabling in the BIOS would be sufficient.

No, but Maple syrup and a beaver may be involved. unibrow

FWIW: I looked around for drivers last night for my Surface Pro (Intel HD 4000 video chip) and the latest ones (.3282, IIRC) work fine. Now ALL my steam games work  (but I did have to turn down the GFX on Van Helsing).

Windows 8 is hell. Stay away from it. Ive had nothing but trouble and games not working since I got it. There is really no benefit over Windows 7 sadly.

Fresh install of Windows 7 and a nice clone of the drive lets me get back to productivity once again and have an easy way to restore if I need to do it again.   I guess I'll miss out on whatever exclusively MS decides to shovel into that pit.

The recent windows 8 exclusives either died out due to people not playing , or was suddenly available on Win 7 so I wouldn't worry.
